Thousands of Rivers Women March for Peace, Show Support for Governor Fubara

Thousands of women from the 23 local government areas of Rivers State recently took to the streets of Port Harcourt in a peaceful march to show solidarity with Governor Siminalayi Fubara. Organized under the banner of Rivers Women Unite for Sim (RWUS), the women wore white T-shirts and red or blue fez caps as they marched from CFC Junction along Aba Road to Polo Club in GRA. Dancing to Afrobeat music blasting from mobile speakers, the women carried placards with messages such as “Allow Governor Sim Work in Peace,” “O God Give Us Peace in Rivers,” “Peace is Priceless, Give Peace a Chance,” and “Rivers Mothers Stand for Peace.” Among the demonstrators were elderly, half-clad women who rolled on the ground with placards in hand, emotionally pleading for peace in the state. The peaceful demonstration also drew support from popular personalities including comedian Julius Agwu and Nollywood actress Hilda Dokubo—also the Rivers State Chairperson of the Labour Party—along with other entertainers. Participating groups included market women, the National Council of Women Societies (NCWS) Rivers Chapter, National Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Ijaw Women Connect (IJWC), Non-Indigenes Without Borders (NWB), Rivers Professionals, Arewa Women, and the Rivers Equity Club, among others. During the event, the women observed a minute of silence in honor of the late Dr. Herbert Wigwe, his wife, and son, before stating that the march was a collective effort to raise their voices in the face of the state’s current political tensions. Reading a nine-point resolution, former Rivers State Commissioner for Environment, Professor Roseline Konya, emphasized the women’s unwavering commitment to peace and support for Governor Fubara’s administration. “As mothers, we warn those who intend to pursue their political ambitions through violence to desist immediately,” she said. “We, the Rivers women, unequivocally condemn any attempt to undermine the office of the governor. We urge all politicians involved to act responsibly and uphold the dignity of the state.” Konya further stressed that ongoing political acrimony was a threat to the dignity of Rivers people and called for collective efforts toward building a stable and credible state. The women urged all residents and true lovers of Rivers State to speak out against threats, lawlessness, and attempts to incite anarchy. “We believe in peace and commend our courageous, God-sent Governor Fubara for choosing peace over chaos—an ultimate show of strength,” Konya added. “We will continue to mobilize and sensitize our people until genuine peace is achieved. Peace is not just a destination; it’s a way of life.” Other speakers, including Bonny LGA Chairperson Nancy Nwankwo, Beatrice Awala, and Professor Grace Akaloku, also voiced their unwavering support for Governor Fubara, declaring that he is here to serve the full eight-year term and calling on all parties to prioritize peace in the state.

PDP Governors Rule Out Coalition Ahead of 2027 Elections

PDP Governors Rule Out Coalition Ahead of 2027 Elections

Governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have dismissed the possibility of a merger or coalition with any other political party ahead of the 2027 general elections. This decision was outlined in a communiqué released on Monday following the PDP Governors’ Forum meeting in Ibadan, Oyo State. Speculation around potential mergers or alliances among opposition parties has been growing, with key political figures—most notably former Vice President Atiku Abubakar—pushing for a united front to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027. Despite this, the PDP governors stood firm, stating:“Noting the nationwide speculations about possible merger of political parties, groups and/or associations, the Forum resolved that the PDP will not join any coalition or merger.” However, the governors left the door open for others to join the PDP, saying the party welcomes any individuals, parties, or groups willing to align with its mission to unseat the APC. The Forum also reaffirmed its support for Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, amid ongoing political tensions, and condemned the rising insecurity across the country. They called for a strategic overhaul, including empowering state and local structures to effectively tackle security challenges. Governors present at the meeting included Bala Mohammed (Bauchi), Ademola Adeleke (Osun), Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Douye Diri (Bayelsa), Dauda Lawal (Zamfara), Agbu Kefas (Taraba), and Peter Mbah (Enugu).Deputy governors Akon Eyakenyi (Akwa Ibom) and Monday Onyeme (Delta) represented their states.

NBA Refutes Selling AGC 2025 Hosting Rights Claims

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has denied selling her 2025 Annual General Conference (AGC) hosting rights to Rivers State. Chairman, 2025 NBA AGC Planning Committee, Emeka Obegolu, SAN stated this in a media statement on Monday. The statement reads; “The attention of the Annual General Conference planning committee has been drawn to a statement credited to the Administrator of Rivers State to the effect that Rivers state government paid hosting rights for the hosting of the NBA AGC 2025. “We wish to clarify that the decision to host the 2025 AGC in Portharcourt was taken in August 2024 and was not subject of any bidding process or payment of any hosting rights. The host city has no hosting right and there is no representation by the NBA that the Conference must be held in a chosen city. “Traditionally, because of the enormous cost involved in hosting the AGC, NBA Conference Planning Committee approaches organizations, agencies of government and state governments for support and the support requested for is unconditional and not tied to hosting rights or any rights whatsoever. “Recent NBA conferences have been supported by different state governments, corporate organizations, ministries, departments and agencies whose budgets accommodate corporate social responsibilities and share the same vision with NBA. Such financial supports are in the form of gifts, partnerships or sponsorships. The money from Rivers State was a gift and was not tied to any purported hosting right for the NBA AGC. “We are committed to delivering a world class conference to members of the Bar and will not be drawn into any unnecessary controversy over this issue.” The 2025 Annual General Conference (AGC) which has been moved from Portharcourt to Enugu is slated bwetween 22nd and 28th og August.

Atiku Will Dump Opposition If Promised Power in 2027 – Wike’s Aide

Lere Olayinka, spokesman for the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has claimed that any opposition movement led by former PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar is doomed to fail. According to Olayinka, Atiku would abandon the opposition and join the All Progressives Congress (APC) if President Bola Tinubu promises to hand over power to him in 2027. He made the remarks while mocking Atiku over his recent visit to former President Muhammadu Buhari in Kaduna, where he was accompanied by political heavyweights including former governors Nasir El-Rufai, Aminu Tambuwal, and Gabriel Suswam. While Atiku described the visit as a Sallah homage, Olayinka dismissed the explanation, suggesting the former Vice President should instead have visited ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo in Abeokuta for Lisabi Day. In a Facebook post, Olayinka wrote:“Those of us who have sense know that any opposition being led by Atiku is a failure from the beginning. If tomorrow President Tinubu tells Atiku, ‘Don’t worry, I’ll hand over to you in 2027, just join APC,’ he’ll switch sides immediately.” Mocking further, he added:“I’m still waiting for Atiku to carry himself to Abeokuta and pay Lisabi Day homage to OBJ. Also, we’re celebrating the Egungun Festival next month in Okemesi Ekiti. He shouldn’t forget to stop by and pay homage there too.”

Tertiary Institutions Shortchanging Students with Student Loans

Recent investigations into the disbursement of the Federal Government Student Loan Fund have uncovered several unethical practices by some institutions of higher learning. According to the latest report by the Community Orientation and Mobilisation Officers (COMO), of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), schools and banks are conspiring to short-change the students. Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, the Director General of the NOA, announced the findings after meeting with NELFUND Managing Director, Mr. Akintunde Sawyerr, over the weekend. Initial reports indicated that certain university officials have been withholding vital information regarding loan disbursements, prompting immediate action from NELFUND. The NOA’s feedback shows how specific institutions have, in connivance with some banks, deliberately delayed payments to successful student applicants for personal financial benefit. Some universities fail to acknowledge the NELFUND’s disbursements to the students. Mr. Akintunde Sawyerr confirmed that some institutions are failing to inform students about loan disbursements made in their name while still requiring them to pay tuition fees. He stated, “Recent findings by NELFUND have shown that some institutions have received student loan disbursements directly into their accounts yet neglect to inform the affected students or record the payments in their financial records, leading to unnecessary confusion. “Withholding critical financial information from students is not only unethical but also a breach of the principles on which NELFUND was founded. We are prepared to take legal action against any institution engaged in such deceptive practices.” In response, Mallam Issa-Onilu has issued a strong warning to these institutions and collaborating banks to cease such activities. NOA has directed its state directorates to provide further feedback from students across the country to ensure that the Federal Government takes appropriate actions against erring schools and banks.

Eight Killed as Bus Hits Explosive Device in Borno; Tensions Rise Over Minister’s Comments

Eight Killed as Bus Hits Explosive Device in Borno Tensions Rise Over Minister’s Comments

At least eight people, including a driver and seven passengers, were killed on Saturday after their vehicle hit an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) suspected to have been planted by Boko Haram terrorists along the Maiduguri–Damboa–Biu federal highway. The tragic incident occurred around 11:30 a.m. near Gidan Kaji (Poultry House) in Konduga Local Government Area, a location that has remained deserted for over a decade due to insurgency. A convoy of private and commercial vehicles was being escorted by troops from Damboa to Maiduguri when the explosion happened, seriously injuring several others who were later rushed to the State Specialist Hospital in Maiduguri for treatment. The District Head of Damboa, Lawan Maina, confirmed the casualties and urged the Federal Government and security agencies to intensify their efforts in combating terrorism in the region. The deadly attack came shortly after former Borno Commissioner for Trade and Commerce, Hon. Yerima Lawan Kareto, criticized the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, for downplaying the security concerns raised by Governor Babagana Zulum. Governor Zulum had earlier warned that Borno may be losing ground to terrorists, citing recent Boko Haram attacks and displacement of military formations in areas like Wulgo, Izge, Sabon Gari, and Wajirko. In response to Zulum’s statement, Minister Idris issued a press release claiming the government remained committed to defeating terrorism and described the governor’s remarks as misinformed. The minister’s aide, Rabiu Ibrahim, later clarified that the controversial headline attributed to his boss—“Ignore Zulum, Boko Haram has not taken over Borno”—was categorically false and a misrepresentation of the minister’s comments. Still, Hon. Kareto maintained that the rebuttal was insufficient, insisting that the minister should visit Borno personally to understand the gravity of the situation and offer an apology to both the state government and its people. Kareto, a native of Damasak, challenged Minister Idris to travel with him to the frontline communities to witness the reality firsthand. He emphasized that the people of Borno continue to support Governor Zulum’s administration, which has consistently provided critical resources to security agencies since 2019. Kareto urged the governor and frontline troops not to be discouraged by the Minister’s remarks but to remain focused in the battle against insurgency. “Borno’s resilience should not be taken for granted,” Kareto stated, adding that only an on-ground assessment could help federal authorities better understand the renewed threat posed by Boko Haram.
