Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has revealed that the country needs at least $10 billion annually over the next 10 to 20 years to achieve a stable and reliable electricity supply. He attributed the persistent power crisis to decades of underinvestment, poor maintenance, and a deteriorating transmission infrastructure. Adelabu made the disclosure on Tuesday during the commissioning of a 2.5MW solar hybrid power plant at the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) in Kaduna. He stressed that unless the issues of the past are addressed, current and future investments may not yield the desired results in the power sector. He also reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to reforming the sector, noting that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is determined to fix long-standing inefficiencies. According to him, the administration is prioritising investments that can significantly expand access and improve reliability across the national grid. The minister’s comments come as the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) launched the third phase of its Rural Electrification Fund (REF), aimed at delivering off-grid power solutions to underserved and unserved communities across Nigeria.

The forum, comprising politically active constituents across party lines, expressed strong dissatisfaction with Senator Dafinone’s performance in office, citing his failure to initiate impactful legislation, execute empowerment programs, and engage effectively with the people of Delta Central. Speaking to the press after the meeting, the National Chairman of NPUCF, Rt. Evangelist Nicholas Evwirnure, accused the senator of gross underrepresentation and a lack of visibility at the National Assembly. “Despite being the only representative of the Urhobo nation — the fifth-largest ethnic group in Nigeria — in the red chamber, Senator Dafinone has failed to make his presence felt. This is unacceptable,” Evwirnure said. He added: “We’ve had impactful senators in the past such as the late Fred Brume, who initiated the Federal University of Petroleum Resources (FUPRE), and the late Chief Pius Ehwerido, who helped implement it. Senator Ovie Omo-Agege also brought the Federal Polytechnic to Orogun and attracted a medical university to the state.” “In contrast, Senator Dafinone’s tenure has been characterized by silence, detachment from his constituents, and a lack of meaningful development initiatives.” The forum also demanded transparency regarding the alleged N10 billion in constituency project funds allocated over two years. “We demand an account of how and where these funds have been utilized. Constituents have not seen evidence of such massive spending,” Evwirnure said. They emphasized the urgent need for the senator to push for the revival of key economic assets such as the steel company and other moribund industries in Urhoboland to generate employment and spur economic development. The group issued a stern warning that if Senator Dafinone fails to respond and show measurable progress within a short period, they would begin the formal recall process. The meeting concluded with a unanimous vote of confidence in President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s M.O.R.E. Agenda, expressing optimism in their respective leaderships.

The lingering leadership crisis in the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) escalated on Wednesday as the South-East caucus threatened to quit the party en masse if its nominee, Hon. Sunday Udeh-Okoye, is not reinstated as the National Secretary. At a high-level zonal meeting held at the Enugu Government House, leaders from the region accused the party of repeated disregard and marginalization. Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, PDP BoT Chairman Senator Adolphus Wabara, and former Imo State Governor Achike Udenwa all voiced frustrations over the treatment of the South-East in party affairs. The zonal leadership unanimously reaffirmed Udeh-Okoye as their nominee and urged the PDP’s National Working Committee (NWC) to immediately ratify his position. They warned that continued delay could force the region to “reconsider” its relationship with the PDP. “The South East has given unflinching loyalty to the PDP for nearly three decades, yet it has been sidelined,” said Chief Ali Odefa, the Zonal Chairman. “Should our position on the National Secretary continue to be ignored, we will be compelled to review our membership in the party.” Meanwhile, staff at the PDP National Secretariat in Abuja expressed concern over the crisis and urged Acting National Chairman Amb. Umar Damagum to ensure the NEC meeting slated for May 27 goes ahead. They backed the temporary appointment of Deputy National Secretary Arch. Setonji Koshoedo, in line with the PDP Governors’ Forum’s April 14 resolution and the NWC’s April 29 directive. The workers affirmed their loyalty to Koshoedo as Acting Secretary pending Udeh-Okoye’s formal ratification.

The embattled Chairman of Ughelli North Local Government Area in Delta State, Jaro Egbo, has been suspended and banned from all family meetings and activities by the Abovwe Descendants Union (ADU) over allegations of gross misconduct, dishonesty, physical assault on elders, and fraudulent conversion of family property, NewsRangers has learned. The decision was reached at an extraordinary elders’ meeting held on May 12, 2025, at Abovwe Hall, Ekrabovwe Quarters in Uduere, with representatives from the four major branches of the Abovwe family—Owhefe, Ogun, Odebor, and Erineyenre—in attendance. According to a communiqué issued after the meeting, and signed by family leaders Pa. David Oduorere (Owhefe), Pa. Emmanuel Arhern Erhueh (Ogun), Mr. Joseph Egoide (Odebor), and Pa. Emagboro (Erineyenre), the family condemned Egbo’s alleged behavior, particularly his reported physical assault on elders during a heated confrontation on April 29, 2025. “This act is not only disgraceful but a gross affront to the sacred institution of elderhood,” the communiqué stated. Accusations of Financial Misconduct and Land Fraud Egbo was further accused of misappropriating family funds, mismanaging communal land, and fraudulently converting family property for personal gain. According to the communiqué, Egbo: The family also alleged that Egbo has intimidated family leadership, threatened to remove the family chairman, and even threatened to jail an elder who challenged his authority. “Until he clears himself of the above issues, he remains suspended from participating in any family meeting or activity,” the family declared. LAGOS MAY 15TH (URHOBOTODAY)-President Bola Tinubu, former President Goodluck Jonathan, and his wife, Dame Patience, Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, Delta State Governor, Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, and his wife, Tobore, were among the dignitaries who paid tribute to the late elder statesman, Chief Edwin Clark, on Tuesday. Clark died on February 17 at the age of 97. The funeral service was held at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Kiagbodo, in Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State. Other dignitaries in attendance were Governors Douye Diri of Bayelsa State, Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State, and Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State. Also present were Deputy Governor of Delta State, Sir Monday Onyeme, and his wife, Ezinne Catherine; former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa; Senators Joel-Onowhakpo Thomas, Ede Dafinone, Henry Seriake Dickson; Chief Rufus Ada George; and Minister of Regional Development, Abubakar Momoh, among others. Tinubu, represented by Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, expressed sadness over the passing of the elder statesman and respected leader of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF). Tinubu said, “Pa Clark was a passionate advocate for resource control, economic and social justice. He was a beacon of courage who spoke for the Niger Delta and the nation. “His views on national issues were distinct and patriotic. He believed in a united Nigeria. As an astute politician, even his opponents never doubted his integrity.” Jonathan described Clark as a great nationalist, who lived in full validation of human dignity. The former president said regarding Clark, “He was a staunch advocate for freedom and national pride. Pa Clark was more than a father and leader; he was an ambassador, an audacious voice for the voiceless, and a steadfast preacher of justice and minority rights. “Whether as a federal commissioner or later as an elder statesman, he remained a courageous and fearless advocate for equity, justice, inclusivity, and good governance.” Akpabio said, “Pa Clark was a Pan-Nigerian and Pan-African, who fought for all, including the minorities. “He has left a legacy and a responsibility to his followers. He did well for Nigeria and for the Niger Delta. The Senate valued him, and his memory will remain a part of our national history. “He stood tall when others bowed for convenience. He belonged to a generation that believed in the eternal cause of freedom. He was a testament to conviction and principles.” Oborevwori, who spoke on behalf of other governors in attendance, described Clark as fearless, vocal, bold, assertive, and unrelenting in speaking truth to power. He added that Clark never remained silent in the face of abuse of power, corruption, or injustice. The governor stated, “Pa Clark lived a fulfilled life and will be remembered for his legacy and contributions to nation-building. He was a teacher, educator, politician, and astute public servant, an example of a life dedicated to service. “He was the voice of the oppressed in Nigeria’s political space. We have lost a powerful voice in the Niger Delta. He fought for improved living conditions, food security, quality education, public safety, and accessible healthcare services. “We must unite, particularly in the Niger Delta, to continue his legacy. I am glad our leader, former President Goodluck Jonathan, is here. We must rally around him and remain united, because it is only through unity that we can achieve more for our people. “When we allow division through personal sentiments, we will hinder progress. Our Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, is one of us. We will continue to support you because that is how we can succeed as a nation. “May God bless Nigeria with more leaders like Chief Edwin Clark, and may his soul rest in eternal peace.” Oborevwori, Diri, and Emmanuel Udom promised to construct a new memorial church to replace the aging church, where the funeral service was conducted. They said this was to actualise an unfulfilled dream of Clark, who had vowed to build a state-of-the-art sanctuary in Kiagbodo community. Archbishop of Bendel Province, Anglican Communion, Most Reverend Cyril Odutemu, delivered a poignant homily, referencing Proverbs 22:1, which says, “A good name is better than riches.” Odutemu lauded Clark’s virtues, calling him a champion of integrity and a man of impeccable character.

The scandal first surfaced in September 2023 when three Real Madrid reserve players were arrested following a complaint by the mother of the 16-year-old girl.
