Tinubu Reverses Maryam Sanda’s Pardon, Imposes 12-Year Prison Term

President Bola Tinubu has cancelled the presidential pardon previously granted to Maryam Sanda, who was convicted in 2020 for the murder of her husband, Bilyaminu Bello.

A new directive, issued through an official gazette on Wednesday by Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed the reversal. The President approved a 12-year prison sentence for Sanda on compassionate grounds.

Sanda, who has spent six years and eight months at the Suleja Medium Security Custodial Centre, is now required to serve the remaining years of her term.

The move follows widespread criticism of the earlier pardon, which many Nigerians described as a miscarriage of justice against the family of the late Bello.

Additional details on the development are expected later.
