Police Arrest Two Banditry and Kidnapping Kingpins Linked to Crimes Across Four States

Operatives of the Force Intelligence Department of the Nigeria Police Force have recorded a major breakthrough with the arrest of two suspected bandits and kidnapping leaders linked to violent crimes across Katsina, Zamfara, Niger and Kwara States. The arrests were disclosed in a statement released on Friday by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin. He said the operation was carried out on December 19, 2025, by the Force Intelligence Department–Intelligence Response Team, working in collaboration with the Kwara State Police Command. The suspects were apprehended during a covert operation along the Komen–Masallaci axis of Kaiama Local Government Area in Kwara State. They were identified as Abubakar Usman, also known as Siddi’m, aged 26, and Shehu Mohammadu, also known as Gide’m, aged 30. Both were arrested in Komen–Masallaci village. Police revealed that Abubakar Usman had recently been identified as the individual seen in a viral video circulating on social media, where he was allegedly displaying firearms and large sums of money. Items recovered from the suspects include a brand new red Honda Ace 125 motorcycle valued at ₦1.85 million, which investigators said was bought with ransom proceeds, ₦500,000 in cash believed to be unspent ransom money, and an AK-47 rifle with a magazine loaded with 20 rounds of live ammunition. Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspects are members of a dangerous banditry and kidnapping syndicate responsible for attacks across several states. Further findings also suggest that the group supplies arms and ammunition to other armed criminal gangs. The police said both suspects are cooperating with investigators to help track down other members of the network and recover additional weapons. The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, praised the operatives involved for their professionalism and dedication, and reassured Nigerians of the Force’s commitment to dismantling criminal networks and strengthening national security. He also urged the public to continue providing timely and credible information to support ongoing police operations.

One of the lawmakers wrote: “I write to formally inform the Honourable Speaker and Honourable Members of this Honourable House of my decision to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) due to lingering and unresolved crises in my party, which have resulted in factional leadership.” They also invoked Section 109(1)(g) of the 1999 Nigerian Constitution (as amended), which allows legislators to switch parties if there is a division within their political party. The lawmakers further criticised the PDP-led state government under Governor Dauda Lawal, accusing it of failing to address insecurity and not fulfilling campaign promises. “My decision is in line with Section 109(1)(g) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), and is also based on the poor leadership of Governor Dauda Lawal, particularly his failure to address security challenges and fulfil campaign promises,” the letters added.

Zamfara State Hosts Mass Wedding for 200 Widows, Orphans, and Underprivileged Women

The Zamfara State Government has organised a mass wedding for 200 widows, orphans, and underprivileged women as part of its 2025 social intervention programmes under the Zakat and Endowment Board. The event, held on Monday, November 24, also marked the conclusion of the board’s yearly activities, which included business grants, debt relief, poultry production training, and computer literacy programmes for vulnerable households. First Lady Huriyya Dauda Lawal said the mass wedding reflects the government’s commitment to empowering widows, orphans, and disadvantaged women. She added that her office provided support items to help the newly married couples start their homes with dignity. “For the fourth quarter of 2025, the Zakat Board has successfully implemented life-changing interventions, including support for 200 female orphans with essential household items like furniture, bedding, and a ₦200,000 dowry to help them begin their marital lives with respect and comfort,” she said. The First Lady further highlighted initiatives such as the settlement of debt cases in Shari’ah courts and correctional centres, giving deserving individuals “a second chance to regain freedom and rebuild their lives honourably.” She noted that 200 small-scale traders, many of them widows, caregivers, and orphans, received ₦50,000 business grants to strengthen their livelihoods. In addition, 100 beneficiaries were trained in poultry production and given starter packs, while 10 orphans and children from disadvantaged homes completed computer literacy courses and received mini-computers. “These efforts demonstrate our vision for a more empowered, self-reliant, and prosperous Zamfara State,” the First Lady said. Habib Balarabe, Executive Secretary of the Zamfara State Zakat and Endowment Board, explained that the mass wedding and related empowerment programmes are designed to support families lacking resources to establish stable homes. “We organise this event specifically for the less-privileged in Zamfara State. Beyond the weddings, we provide programmes to empower them at home, such as business start-up support,” he said, adding that the initiatives aim to reduce poverty and curb street begging. One of the brides, 17-year-old Zainab Mohammed, expressed gratitude to the state government. Though not an orphan, she said she chose marriage over continuing school. “Honestly, I thank Almighty God and Prophet Mohammed, may the peace of God be with him. I am very happy. I am not an orphan. Honestly, I prefer marriage to going to school,” she said. Each newly married couple received furniture and a cash gift of ₦30,000, while poultry training participants were given starter packs to launch small-scale ventures.

Court Sacks Zamfara Lawmaker Abubakar Gummi For Defecting To APC

The Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed Hon. Abubakar Gummi as the member representing Gummi/Bukkuyum Federal Constituency in Zamfara State following his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). In a ruling delivered on Thursday, Justice Obiora Egwuatu declared Gummi’s seat vacant and prohibited the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, from recognising him as a serving lawmaker. The court also ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a bye-election within 30 days to fill the vacant seat. The case, instituted by the PDP and its Zamfara State chairman, Jamilu Jibomagayaki, maintained that Gummi’s defection violated Section 68(1)(g) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which stipulates that a legislator automatically forfeits their seat if they defect from the party that sponsored their election without a proven division in the party. Gummi, through his counsel, claimed his defection was triggered by internal wrangling within the PDP, which he said affected his ability to deliver effective representation to his constituents. Rejecting his argument, Justice Egwuatu ruled in favour of the PDP, stressing that elected officials must honour the mandate given to them under the platform that brought them to power. “It is legally and morally wrong for a politician to abandon the party under which they were elected and move to another without relinquishing the mandate,” he said. “Political prostitution must not be rewarded.” The court further directed Gummi to refund all salaries and allowances he had received from October 30, 2024, to the date of the judgment and submit proof of repayment within 30 days. Additionally, the judge awarded N500,000 in costs to the plaintiffs.
