Defence Headquarters Commends Military Officer’s Stand Against Wike Over Abuja Land Dispute

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has commended the professionalism and resilience of the Nigerian military following a confrontation between a military officer and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike over a disputed piece of land in Abuja. Videos from the incident showed Wike attempting to access the land, only to be blocked by the officer, who insisted he was acting on official orders. Despite the tense exchange, the officer remained firm, refusing to allow the Minister entry. In a social media post, the DHQ subtly praised the military’s dedication, stating: “IT IS AN HONOUR TO SERVE IN THE NIGERIAN MILITARY UNSHAKEN. UNBENT. UNBROKEN.” The statement highlights the military’s commitment to discipline and duty, even in politically sensitive situations, and underscores the ongoing challenges surrounding land allocations in the Federal Capital Territory.

Military Veterans Demand Wike Apologise Over Heated Clash With Naval Officer In Abuja

A coalition of Nigerian military veterans has demanded a public apology from the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, over his verbal altercation with a naval officer during an enforcement visit to a disputed plot of land in Abuja. The group’s reaction followed a viral video showing Wike in a heated argument with naval personnel who had prevented him and his team from accessing the property. In the footage, Wike accused the officers of backing an illegal development, while one of them maintained that they were acting on official orders and that the land was linked to a former Chief of Naval Staff. The exchange escalated as Wike reportedly used offensive language toward one of the officers, prompting widespread criticism. In a statement signed by its spokesperson, Abiodun Durowaiye-Herberts, the Coalition of Military Veterans condemned Wike’s behaviour, calling it a show of disrespect towards a serving officer. “How can a public office holder call an officer ‘a fool’ on camera? He should have engaged the Chief of Naval Staff privately rather than attempting to disgrace a retired senior officer,” Durowaiye-Herberts said. He emphasized that uniformed personnel represent the authority of the Nigerian state and that insulting them undermines the nation’s institutions. The coalition also warned against any plans to sanction the officer, threatening to stage a protest if disciplinary action is taken. “If for any reason the officer is punished, military veterans will occupy the office and residence of the FCT Minister,” the spokesperson cautioned. Durowaiye-Herberts added that Wike’s conduct was unworthy of his position and urged him to show leadership by apologizing. “Wike’s action demeans the dignity of the office of a minister. He should apologise for using abusive language. It is not acceptable behaviour,” he stated.

Joe Igbokwe Calls For Sack Of Soldier Who Blocked Wike From Accessing Abuja Land

All Progressives Congress chieftain, Joe Igbokwe, has called for the immediate dismissal of a soldier who clashed with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, during a confrontation over a disputed piece of land in Abuja. Reacting to the incident on Facebook, Igbokwe expressed anger over the soldier’s defiance and questioned the forces behind his actions. He wrote, “Who is this man in uniform? Of what meat is he fed? Who is beating the drum for him? This is unacceptable. His uniform has to be removed.” Reports earlier in the day revealed that the soldier had blocked Wike and senior FCTA officials from accessing a section of land in the capital city. The officer, who claimed to be acting on orders, refused the Minister entry, which quickly escalated into a heated exchange. Wike’s media aide, Lere Olayinka, later alleged that the soldier had been instructed by a former Chief of Naval Staff to obstruct the Minister.

Wike Says He Won’t Be Intimidated By Military Officer In Abuja Land Dispute

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has vowed not to succumb to intimidation or blackmail following a confrontation with an unidentified military officer over an alleged land-grabbing incident in Abuja. Speaking to journalists after the clash on Tuesday, Wike described the situation as “unfortunate,” saying the altercation stemmed from efforts by the FCT Administration to stop illegal developments in the area. According to him, his team had gone to enforce directives issued by his office when soldiers reportedly intervened to stop the operation. “When they came here, I was informed that the military came to chase them away, and I thought they were acting illegally,” Wike said. “So today, while I was in the office, they came to implement the directive that was given to them by myself. I was told that the military had taken over the place, and I had to come by myself. It is really unfortunate.” The minister expressed concern that the officer involved appeared to be using his military status to intimidate government officials, stressing that such behavior was unacceptable. “I do not understand how somebody who attained that position sees that he has a problem and cannot approach my office to say, ‘look, this is what is going on.’ But simply because he is a military man, he thinks he can use that to intimidate Nigerians. I am not one who will succumb to blackmail or intimidation,” Wike stated. He further challenged the officer to present valid documentation proving ownership of the disputed property. “Where are the documents? I said, bring the documents. You don’t have approval for building, you don’t have it. How can we continue to allow lawlessness to prevail in this country?” he asked. Wike confirmed that he had reached out to the Chief of Defence Staff and the Chief of Naval Staff, both of whom assured him that the matter would be addressed appropriately. “We are not here to cause chaos, but I must say I will not allow this illegal development to continue just because he is a former Chief of Naval Staff,” he said. A video circulating online showed Wike confronting the officer and accusing him of using the military to unlawfully seize land. “Because you are an officer? Nobody does that. The man took land because he was the Chief of Naval Staff?” the minister was heard saying. Since assuming office in August 2023, Wike has intensified efforts to tackle illegal land acquisitions and unauthorized developments across Abuja, insisting that the capital’s master plan must be strictly restored and maintained.

Wike Clashes With Military Officer Over Alleged Land Encroachment in Abuja

A heated confrontation took place on Tuesday between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and an unidentified military officer over an alleged land-grabbing incident in Abuja’s Gaduwa District. A video obtained by our correspondent showed Wike accusing the officer of unlawfully taking possession of a plot of land. The minister challenged the officer, questioning why the military would claim ownership simply because the property was once linked to a former Chief of Naval Staff. “Because you are an officer? Nobody does that. The man took land because he was the Chief of Naval Staff?” Wike demanded. The officer, dressed in military camouflage, insisted that his acquisition of the land was legal and carried out with integrity. “I am an officer with integrity. Everything was acquired legally,” he said. Wike, visibly angry, ordered the officer to be quiet, prompting the officer to respond, “I will not shut up.” The minister shot back: “You are a very big fool. As at the time I graduated, you were still in primary school.” The officer maintained that he was deployed to the site on official orders, but Wike escalated the exchange: “You will see if you will not leave here. Go and develop there and let me see.” As of press time, neither the military nor the Federal Capital Territory Administration had issued an official statement regarding the incident. Land disputes and illegal allocations remain a recurring problem in Abuja. Since taking office in August 2023, Wike has stepped up efforts to curb unauthorised land acquisition, illegal property development, and encroachments, ordering demolitions of illegal structures to enforce the Abuja Master Plan. FCT Minister, Wike Orders Property Owners to Pay N5m Fine Within 14 Days

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has issued a final 14-day deadline for property owners in Asokoro, Maitama, Garki, and Wuse to pay a N5 million penalty for violating approved land-use regulations. Lere Olayinka, Wike’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, stated on Sunday that the grace period begins Tuesday, November 11, and runs until November 25, 2025. Property owners who fail to comply will face enforcement action from the FCT Administration. “The Minister has granted defaulters a final 14-day window to settle the N5 million violation fee and other applicable charges for illegal land-use conversions,” Olayinka said. The directive follows Wike’s earlier approval on September 3, 2025, which imposed the N5 million fine and a 7.5 percent levy on the assessed capital value of properties converted without FCT approval. The action was based on a report from a ministerial committee that investigated land-use abuses, and the administration had previously published the names of 374 defaulters. The affected properties include Gana and Usuma Streets in Maitama; Yakubu Gowon Crescent in Asokoro; Aminu Kano and Adetokunbo Ademola Crescents in Wuse II; and Ladoke Akintola Boulevard, Gimbiya, and Onitsha Streets in Garki II. Other addresses include Ogbomosho Street, Lafia Close, Yola Street, Abriba Close, Danbatta Street, Ringim Close, and Ilorin Street in Garki I. Owners who regularise their land use within the 14-day period will be issued new Certificates of Occupancy and Statutory Rights of Occupancy reflecting the approved use, along with a renewed 99-year tenure. However, the minister’s consideration does not apply to properties that have been withdrawn or revoked due to non-development, unpaid ground rent, or other violations.

Wike Defends Traveling With Sons To UAE, Says No Law Prohibits It

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has responded to criticisms over bringing his two sons, Jordan and Joaquin, on an official trip to the United Arab Emirates. The Minister attended the 2025 Asia Pacific Cities Summit and Mayor’s Forum in Dubai, where his sons were seen alongside the Nigerian delegation. Some Nigerians criticized the move, accusing Wike of misusing public funds and involving his children in government affairs despite their lack of official roles. Wike defended his decision, insisting he broke no law. “What law says that my sons shouldn’t travel? Did they sign any document? It doesn’t have to be a personal trip. They have to know how Nigeria works,” he said, challenging critics to show proof that the Federal Capital Territory Administration paid for his sons’ travel. He also dismissed claims that he was grooming his children for politics. Wike noted that his eldest son studied law but chose a career in farming, while his second son holds a master’s degree in Economics and is pursuing real estate. “I’m proud of my children. They have given me comfort, not problems. I won’t travel with my enemy’s children,” Wike added, emphasizing his satisfaction with their discipline and conduct.

Wike Says He Will Only Testify In Nnamdi Kanu’s Trial If Officially Subpoenaed

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has said he will only appear as a witness in the trial of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu if he is officially subpoenaed by the court. Speaking during his monthly media briefing on Friday, Wike addressed reports that Kanu had listed him among 23 planned witnesses, which also include former Minister of Defence Gen. Theophilus Danjuma (retd) and former Chief of Army Staff Gen. Tukur Buratai (retd). Wike clarified that he did not volunteer to be a witness and has not received any legal documents or formal court summons. He emphasised that one cannot assume the role of a witness simply based on media reports. “If you see Nnamdi Kanu, ask him why he listed me. I did not go to him to say I want to be a witness. You don’t become a witness by reading a newspaper. Nobody has served me process; nobody has subpoenaed me. “So, if I am served and subpoenaed to give evidence, I will obey the court and appear,” Wike said, stressing the importance of following proper legal procedure.
