JAMB Extends 2025 Admission Deadline for Public Universities to November 17

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has extended the 2025 admission deadline for public universities in Nigeria from October 31 to November 17, 2025. The extension, announced on JAMB’s official X handle on Sunday, comes following appeals from university administrators and challenges linked to new programme accreditations affecting the ongoing admissions process. “AVCNU has specially appealed for an extension due to the disruption caused by a number of factors, including a court order directing that the status quo should remain on the 2025/2026 admission list, which was only lifted by the same court on 28th October 2025,” the Board explained. JAMB recalled that the original deadline was set during the 2025 Policy Meeting on Admissions, held on July 18 and chaired by the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Alausa. The Board also cited the recent accreditation of 229 new programmes across 37 universities by the National Universities Commission (NUC) as a major reason for the shift, noting that admissions into these newly approved courses are just beginning. “In line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, this move aims to expand access to tertiary education,” JAMB added. While commending universities for their cooperation, the Board emphasized that the new November 17 deadline is final. “This extension is to ensure that no institution or candidate is unfairly disadvantaged. It is the final adjustment, and all institutions must conclude their processes within the new timeframe,” JAMB warned.

Mathematics No Longer Required For Arts And Humanities Students In University And Polytechnic Admissions

The Federal Ministry of Education has announced that senior secondary school students in the arts and humanities will no longer need a credit in mathematics in their Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) conducted by WAEC or NECO to gain admission into Nigerian universities and polytechnics. For decades, all admission seekers—regardless of their chosen fields—were required to obtain five credits, including English and Mathematics, to qualify for higher education. However, the ministry said this requirement has now been revised to better reflect the needs of each discipline. According to a statement by ministry spokesperson Folasade Boriowo, the updated National Guidelines for Entry Requirements into Nigerian Tertiary Institutions aim to “remove barriers while maintaining academic standards.” The new framework applies to universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, and Innovation Enterprise Academies nationwide: Universities: Candidates must have a minimum of five credit passes in relevant subjects, including English Language, in not more than two sittings. Mathematics remains compulsory for Science, Technology, and Social Science courses only. Polytechnics (ND Level): A minimum of four credit passes in relevant subjects is required, including English for non-science courses and Mathematics for science-related ones. Polytechnics (HND Level): Candidates must present five credits, including both English Language and Mathematics. Colleges of Education (NCE Level): A minimum of four credits is needed, with English mandatory for Arts and Social Science courses, and Mathematics for Science, Vocational, and Technical programs. Education analyst Ayodamola Oluwatoyin commended the move, describing it as a “brilliant reform” that will ease admission hurdles for many students. Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, said the decision represents a deliberate effort to expand access to tertiary education across the country.

Rivers, University of Port Harcourt partner as Team Rivers gear up for 2025 NSF

The Rivers State Ministry of Sports and University of Port Harcourt have reached a partnership which will see Athletes of the State camp and train at the facilities of the Institution ahead of the participation of Team Rivers at the upcoming 2025 National Sports Festival. Speaking at a brief ceremony to seal the partnership at the University of Port Harcourt on Tuesday, the Rivers State Sports Commissioner, Barr. Chris Green described facilities at the Institution as some of the best, not just in Nigeria, but across the continent. He added that he was confident that the benefits of the alliance will be latent and positively affect the chances of Team Rivers emerging as Nulli Secundus amongst the committee of States at the upcoming NSF. “We have the rare privilege of having the University of Port Harcourt here in Rivers State and what you have been doing in this school is such that other Universities (in the country) should emulate,” Barr. Green, a three time Sports Commissioner in Rivers State, said. “The facilities and equipment you have here and the manner in which you have maintained them (to consistently remain in optimum conditions) has made us come here. “And in line with our policy to develop Sports at grassroots level, most of the athletes with us at Team Rivers are products of the University of Port Harcourt,” he added. On his part, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt, Professor Owunari Georgewill expressed excitement at the pardtnership, noting that the Institution will always welcome Athletes of Team Rivers with open arms. “This University will always partner with the Rivers State Government and we are pleased and honoured that the Sports Ministry has chosen us, yet again to camp their athletes for the NSF,” Professor Georgewill stated. Afterwards, the Rivers State Sports Commissioner and his team also paid a courtesy call to the management of the Sports Institute of the University of Port Harcourt with a member of the contingent, foremost Sports administrator, Professor Ken Anugwege acknowledging the importance of the interaction. “This visit is important as this (Uniport Sports Institute) is the facility and it is our earnest hope and desire that this partnership ends in positivity for Rivers State,” he said.

Amaju to star as guest lecturer in University of Ibadan on Tuesday

The immediate-past President of Nigeria Football Federation and Nigeria’s FIFA Council Member, Mr. Amaju Melvin Pinnick, OFR will add another feather to his cap when he delivers this year’s Personality Guest Lecture of the Faculty of Education, University of Ibadan on Tuesday, 29th October 2024. Pinnick, who is also a member of the Executive Committee of Confederation of African Football, will address the very germane topic of sport infrastructure, as he speaks on The Challenges of Sports Infrastructure And Maintenance In Nigeria: Prospect for Podium Performance. The Dean of the Faculty, Professor Olufemi Adegbesan, said Pinnick, who is also a holder of the traditional honour of Royal Order of Iwere (ROI) was chosen for the honour based on his vast experience in sports administration and management, his broad worldview of the problems of sport infrastructure and maintenance, and his passion for youth empowerment through well-maintained infrastructure to discover and nurture budding talents. “The Personality Guest Lecture is a part of the town-gown synergy of the University of Ibadan, the premier university. The Faculty of Education is desirous of contributing its quota to the development of Nigerian society through organizing personality lectures to discuss issues affecting the Nigerian economy. “Our guest lecturer, Mr. Amaju Pinnick, has the resume to present the lecture having been at the top in sports management and administration nationally and internationally. The personality lecture offers a forum where individuals with proven track records of hard work, service to humanity and excellence in their chosen careers interface with a large audience comprising the youth, members of the academic community, stakeholders in the public and private sectors, and the general public.” Tuesday’s lecture will hold at the Trenchard Hall of Nigeria’s first university and will commence at 11am. The Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Kayode Adebowale will lead the top echelon of the foremost citadel of learning to the event, with the sports community also well-represented. Newly-appointed Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko will lead the crew that will include President of NFF, Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau, NFF General Secretary, Dr Mohammed Sanusi and NFF Director of Media and Communications, Dr Ademola Olajire. Pinnick’s business associates and jet-set friends will also be there in numbers.
