Over 1000 athletes are already set to participate in the upcoming MTN Champs Continental Relays, taking place between April 9 and April 12 at the UNILAG and Yabatech Sports complexes. Organisers anticipate even more registrations before the April 2 deadline. MTN Champs is Nigeria’s largest grassroots sports competition, a collaboration between MTN Nigeria and Making of Champs (MoC), providing a platform for young athletes to showcase their talents and potentially represent Nigeria on the global stage. Osaze Ebueku, Senior Manager, Go-to-Market at MTN Nigeria at the opening ceremony of the MTN Champs Classics events in Benin had emphasised the long-term vision behind MTN Champs: “We’re building future Olympians for Nigeria. MTN Champs is about more than competition. It’s about changing lives.” The continental relays mark the second leg of the MTN Champs Season 3, following the Classics competition in Benin, which saw 4,371 event entries from 2,056 athletes. As of March 24, the Lagos leg had already recorded 2,821 event entries across different age categories, highlighting the growing enthusiasm around the competition. The registered athletes are spread across four categories, with 174 in the Cadet (U-14) category, 388 in Youth (U-17), 270 in Junior (U-20), and 279 in the Senior category.To ensure smooth participation, organisers have outlined important guidelines. Athletes in the Cadet, Youth, and Junior categories must submit a signed Parental Consent Form, while all registered schools and athletes must collect their competition bibs by April 8 at the competition venue to confirm their participation and secure their place on the start list. Sports enthusiasts can look forward to an electrifying showcase of emerging talent, as young athletes seize the opportunity to prove their skills on a professional stage.

FG expands palliative programme to support Students, FCT communities

In a significant move to improve the lives of Nigerians, the Federal Government has expanded its palliative programme with the support of students across the country and residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja, building on the success of its previous distribution in Imo State. The Honourable Minister of State for Finance, Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite, CFA, while distributing the palliatives weekend, emphasized that the gesture will address immediate needs, explaining that they form part of the broader economic reform agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’sAdministration. These palliatives serve as a bridge while our comprehensive economic reforms take root, she said. The initiative has reached multiple demographics across the FCT’s Area Councils, with beneficiary groups including student bodies, women associations, community organizations, and vulnerable groups. Notable student organisations that benefited from the programme include the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Nigerian Female Students Association (NFSAN), and NANS alumni networks. Commending the initiative, Mr. Sunday Asefon, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Student Engagement, praised the Minister’s commitment to student welfare: Dr. Uzoka-Anite has demonstrated remarkable understanding of students’ challenges in these times. Her proactive approach in extending these palliatives to students nationwide shows the Tinubu Administration’s dedication to supporting Nigerian students while implementing necessary economic reforms, he stated. In the FCT, the distribution has particularly impacted grassroots organizations across various Area Councils, with special attention to women groups and community associations. Key beneficiaries include FCT Market Women Associations, Area Council Youth Associations, Religious and Cultural Groups, Widows’ Associations, and Community Development Organizations. The Minister emphasized that the palliative distribution aligns with President Tinubu’s commitment to alleviating the immediate impact of economic reforms while building a more sustainable economic foundation for Nigeria. Randle hospital urges students to speak up against Sexual abuse, domestic violence

Students of Adebola Baptist Senior High School and residents have been enjoined to speak up against Domestic and Sexual Violence, as a way of preventing abuses and vices that can affect their progress in life. The advice was given by various speakers at a two-day programme organised as part of activities marking the Y2024 Domestic and Sexual Awareness Month by the Randle General Hospital, Surulere. A member of the Lagos State House of Assembly representing Surulere Constituency, Honourable Desmond Elliot, in his address at the event, explained that the programme was designed to educate as many people as possible on the menace. He said that in Nigeria, lots of people are suffering domestic violence, either physically or through abusive words. Hence sensitisation is needed for people to have respect for each other. While advising that the victims have a right to report cases when they occur, the Honourable stressed that domestic violence is not only about women but concerns everyone, irrespective of age or gender. The Medical Director/CEO of RGH, Dr. Olumide Sojinrin declared that the hospital is ever ready to support everybody, adding that all staff have been enjoined to do everything in their power to assist victims of SGBV in the community. The Head of Department, Social Welfare in the Hospital, Mr. Mojeed Olabode took the students on an interactive session, detailing the meaning of SGBV, causes and harmful effects of domestic and gender-based violence. A Consultant, Obstetrics & Gynaecology (O&G), Dr. Shakirat Smith-Okonu appealed to the students to see themselves as leaders of tomorrow, and as such, should avoid vices that could hinder their progress. She said they should avoid going out with strangers or allowing the opposite sex to touch their private parts and delay any form of sexual activity till they are adults or married. “You are also not to dress indecently or inappropriately or follow friends to parties. Ensure to always inform your parents of your whereabouts”, she advised. On her part, Apex Nurse Boateng Elizabeth pointed out that domestic violence also includes force marriages, child genital mutilation and right violation, adding that the hospital health workers are always poised to help survivors and protect their dignity. Other speakers, at the event that witnessed a large turnout of students and teachers, encouraged participants, especially the students, to say something, when they see something, to say NO to Sexual Abuse, Rape and Domestic Violence, and to report cases appropriately, in line with the dictate of the Month’s slogans.
