Asisat Oshoala Joins Saudi Club On Two-Year Deal

Super Falcons and 2024 WAFCON winning striker, Asisat Oshoala has completed a move to Al Hilal, signing a two-year contract with the Saudi Women’s Premier League side, leaving Bay FC After one-and-a-half season. The deal was finalized Monday morning after the 30-year-old successfully completed her medical in Riyadh, ahead of the Saudi league’s summer transfer window deadline. Oshoala’s switch marks another major acquisition for Al Hilal, who finished sixth in the 2024-25 campaign as the competition expanded from eight to 10 teams. Oshoala joins fellow Super Falcons teammates Ashleigh Plumptre and Francisca Ordega in Saudi Arabia as the ambitious Saudi Women’s Premier League continues to attract international talent. The six-time African Women’s Footballer of the Year leaves Bay FC after joining the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) expansion club ahead of their debut season in 2024. She scored seven regular-season goals and added one assist in her first campaign, helping Bay FC finish seventh and qualify for the playoffs before bowing out in the quarterfinals to Washington Spirit. This season, Oshoala’s role diminished, with just five starts in 12 matches and no goals or assists before her departure. She was listed as an “excused absence” for Monday’s game against Angel City, signaling her imminent move. Looking at Asisat Oshoala’s résumé prior to signing with Bay FC, her tenure with Barcelona was successful. THis is because the Nigerian international owns to her name, 107 goals in 149 appearances across five seasons. However, the two-time Ballon d’Or nominee was as productive for Bay, despite scoring the team’s first-ever goal. Oshoala earned 23 starts in 25 games for Bay FC’s last season, scoring seven goals. This year, she’s seen less of the pitch, making five starts across 12 matches without a goal.

Man City Crashes Out of Club World Cup

Manchester City crashed out of the Club World Cup as Al-Hilal snatched a stunning 4-3 victory in extra time of a pulsating last-16 clash in Orlando. Marcos Leonardo grabbed his second goal with 112 minutes on the clock as the Saudi Arabian side produced a major upset. Bernardo Silva gave City a ninth-minute lead but Pep Guardiola’s side were punished for missing a series of chances as Leonardo and Malcom replied after the break. Erling Haaland sent the game to extra time but City needed another equaliser from Phil Foden after Kalidou Koulibaly headed Al-Hilal back ahead. City, who were caught repeatedly on the break, were undone again as Leonardo had the final say and the Saudi side will now play Fluminense for a place in the semi-finals. Guardiola, having taken the competition seriously, will rue a wasteful first-half display. His side started quickly with Ruben Dias heading straight at Yassine Bounou. The opening goal soon came, although it proved highly controversial with complaints of handball against Rayan Ait-Nouri and Ilkay Gundogan. Tijjani Reijnders cleverly played in Ait-Nouri but the ball appeared to brush the Algerian’s hand before he crossed. It then took two ricochets, the second off the shoulder of Gundogan, before Silva poked past Bounou. Al-Hilal players surrounded referee Jesus Valenzuela but the Venezuelan was unmoved. City should have extended their lead before half-time but Bounou denied Savinho, Gundogan, Josko Gvardiol and Jeremy Doku. Silva had a shot parried but, after riding their luck, Al-Hilal went close through Leonardo and Malcom. City failed to heed those warnings and were punished as Al-Hilal struck twice in the first seven minutes of the second half. The equaliser came as former City full-back Joao Cancelo drove in a low cross. Ederson pushed away and Malcom’s attempt on the rebound was blocked but the ball looped up for Leonardo to head in. City were stung again moments later as Al-Hilal quickly recycled the ball from a corner they were defending. Malcom broke from halfway and buried a low shot into the far corner. City needed to respond and did so as a Silva corner led to a goalmouth scramble. Haaland pounced from close range to level but, far from settling nerves, the Premier League side remained vulnerable. Malcom was brought down by Dias for what seemed a certain penalty only for an offside flag to spare City. It also took a good recovery tackle by Manuel Akanji to prevent Malcom getting in another shot and Mohamed Kanno fluffed a free header. City were inches away as Akanji headed against the post and Haaland’s follow-up was cleared off the line. Both sides had further attacks and Doku was pulled back seconds before the final whistle was blown. Guardiola raced onto the field to complain but the game was heading to extra time. City, who lost Haaland to injury, were stunned when Al-Hilal reclaimed the lead with Koulibaly’s powerful header. Yet the drama was far from over as Foden, having come off the bench to replace another substitute in the ineffective Rodri, exquisitely volleyed in from a Rayan Cherki cross. Al-Hilal refused to lie down and scored yet again as Leonardo pounced to settle the contest after Ederson had pushed away a header from Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.

Saudi Club Al-Hilal Lures Victor Osimhen

Al-Hilal have made a contract offer to in-demand striker Victor Osimhen. The forward, lit up the Super Lig at Galatasaray last season, scoring 25 goals and providing five assists in 29 games for the Turkish giants. Osimhen, who has previously been discussed by Manchester United and Chelsea, is currently on loan from Napoli and is set to return to the Italian club this summer, where his contract expires in 2026. The 26-year-old scored 31 goals in all competitions as he fired Napoli to a first Serie A title in 33 years in the 2022-23 season, and has since been rated as one of Europe’s elite frontmen. However, he was forced to desperately search for a new club in last summer’s transfer window after Napoli boss Antonio Conte signed Romelu Lukaku and left Osimhen out of his squad. Despite reports of a potential move to Chelsea and a host of Saudi sides, no move permanent move materialised. Last summer, Chelsea legends John Obi Mikel and Didier Drogba reached out to the forward to try and talk him into a Stamford Bridge switch. ‘I hope that Chelsea fans will finally see him come to the club. I’ll make sure I send him those text messages and calls, making sure Chelsea is his top priority,’ said Mikel. ‘But it seems like he loves the club and wants to come to Chelsea. I’m sure he has all the big clubs wanting to sign him. I think if we can secure his signature it would be fantastic for the club. ‘Didier is also speaking to him, sharing his own ideas and what the club means to us. We all want to see Victor come to the club. If it happens, it happens. It’s a huge transfer fee, but if we can match it and get him to the club that would be absolutely fantastic.’
