My Mum Tied Me Up And Tried To Beat Me On Stage, Says Sanyeri, Regrets Not Continuing Education

Olaniyi Afonja, popularly known as Sanyeri, has shared how his passion for acting once caused tension with his parents, admitting he now regrets not continuing his education. In a candid interview, the actor explained that his parents saw formal schooling as the key to a successful future and strongly opposed his pursuit of an acting career. He recounted a particularly painful incident: “There was a day Iya Niyi [my mother] came with a cane to beat me on stage. My hands and legs were tied during a performance in front of the audience and my fans.” Despite the public humiliation and family pressure, Sanyeri said he could not give up acting, which brought him joy and fulfillment. Eventually, he left home to live with his employer at the time. Looking back, he expressed remorse for not furthering his education, acknowledging that his parents only wanted to protect him and guide him toward a secure future.
