Wike Mocks Peter Obi, Says He’ll Keep Contesting For President On Social Media

Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, has mocked former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, saying he will remain a “social media presidential candidate” rather than one taken seriously in Nigeria. Wike made the remark on Thursday while commissioning newly constructed roads in the Mabushi District of Abuja, responding to Obi’s recent comments about the poor state of public schools in the FCT. Obi had visited LEA Primary School in Kapwa on Wednesday, where he described the condition of the school as a “national disgrace” and a reflection of the government’s neglect of education. He lamented the lack of chairs, toilets, and other basic facilities, blaming the situation on leadership failure. In a sharp response, Wike accused Obi of politicising the issue and using emotional gestures to gain sympathy on social media. He said his administration was already addressing infrastructure challenges in the FCT, insisting that Obi had no moral ground to criticise anyone’s performance. “I hear one of the social media presidential candidates went to a local school and claimed the government has abandoned public education. His name is Mr Peter Obi. It’s not everything you must play politics with,” Wike said. The minister also took aim at Obi’s record as governor of Anambra State, alleging that he ignored key infrastructure projects during his eight-year tenure. “Peter Obi, you were governor for eight years. If you had completed all the necessary work in Anambra, nobody would still be talking about development there today. And why did you fall out with your successor?” Wike questioned. He further compared Obi’s tenure to his own record in Abuja, saying: “We’ve only been in office for two years. You served eight years. Compare what we’ve done in two years in the FCT to what you did in Anambra in eight years. Can you really say you love this country or Ndi Anambra? Certainly not.” Wike concluded with a taunt: “You will continue to contest for President on social media, but never as President of Nigeria. You couldn’t manage your own party, yet you want to manage a country of over 200 million people. It’s not possible for people like you.”

Wale Edun Recovering In Abuja, Presidency Denies Stroke And Replacement Reports

Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, is recovering at his Abuja residence after falling ill, with the Presidency debunking claims that he suffered a stroke or had been flown abroad for treatment. Presidency sources told The PUNCH on Sunday that although the minister’s illness is somewhat serious, he remains under medical supervision in Nigeria and continues to recuperate at home. A senior official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, clarified that there is no plan by President Bola Tinubu to replace Edun. “Yes, he’s indisposed. He’s sick, which is a bit serious, but it’s not a stroke. As I’m talking to you, he’s in his house. He has not been flown anywhere. Of course, he might seek medical attention elsewhere if doctors say it’s necessary,” the source said. Another top official confirmed that Edun is being treated by Nigerian doctors, noting that any decision to seek further care abroad would depend on medical advice. “He’s being attended to by Nigerian doctors. They’re still monitoring him. If he needs medical care outside Nigeria, he will go. But he’s still at home. There are no plans to replace him,” the source stated. The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, also confirmed Edun’s condition, saying, “Yes, he’s indisposed. Wale Edun is about 69 years old. He suddenly fell ill. As we are talking, he is in Nigeria. He is recuperating. He’s around.” His comments followed reports by The Whistler alleging that President Tinubu was considering replacing the minister following news of his ill health. Earlier, the Presidency announced that Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Olayemi Cardoso, would lead Nigeria’s delegation to the 2024 World Bank and International Monetary Fund Annual Meetings in Washington, D.C., on behalf of the minister. The meetings are scheduled to commence on Monday, October 14. Appointed on August 28, 2023, Edun has been a central figure in Tinubu’s economic reform drive, championing efforts to stabilise the naira, reduce inflation, and attract foreign investment. He previously served as Lagos State Commissioner for Finance under Tinubu’s administration between 1999 and 2004. As of the time of this report, the Ministry of Finance had yet to issue an official statement regarding his health.

Presidency Rejects World Bank Claim That 139 Million Nigerians Are Poor

The Presidency has refuted the World Bank’s latest report claiming that 139 million Nigerians are currently living in poverty. Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, described the report as misleading and inconsistent with Nigeria’s official data. Onanuga explained that the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) remains the only credible source for poverty figures in the country, emphasizing that the World Bank’s estimate does not reflect Nigeria’s current economic realities. He said the NBS last conducted a verified national survey in 2018–2019, which put the poverty figure at about 82.9 million Nigerians — far lower than the number cited by the World Bank. Onanuga added that the government is implementing several social intervention and economic reform programs aimed at reducing poverty and improving citizens’ welfare, insisting that progress is being made despite the challenges.

The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, disclosed this while addressing inquiries about the controversy surrounding the minister’s alleged forged degree certificate from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN). Onanuga stated that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will respect the judicial process and refrain from making any comments on the matter while it remains before the court. “This matter is already in court. We should await the verdict of the court,” Onanuga told Leadership Newspaper. The presidential aide’s remarks come amid growing pressure on Nnaji to resign pending the outcome of the case, which has generated significant public and political attention. Minister Speaks on His UNN Certificate In a recent statement, Uche Nnaji addressed the allegations, saying he had not yet collected his degree certificate from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. His explanation, however, has further fuelled controversy, with critics arguing that the minister’s acknowledgment implies that the certificate he presented to the Senate during his ministerial screening may have been fake or forged. The University of Nigeria has reportedly denied issuing the said degree certificate, stating, “UNN never issued a degree certificate to him.” As the case proceeds in court, the federal government maintains that it will withhold any decision or disciplinary action until a judicial determination is made.

President Bola Tinubu will return to Nigeria today from his work visit to France, the Presidency has said. The President’s spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, disclosed this in a post on his X handle on Monday. Tinubu left Nigeria on April 2, 2025, for Paris, France, on a short work visit. According to the Presidency, Tinubu used the retreat to review the progress of ongoing reforms and engage in strategic planning ahead of his administration’s second anniversary. The President’s latest trip had been faulted by major opposition leaders who criticised him for being away despite the rising insecurity in the country, especially in Benue and Plateau states, where scores of residents have been killed in attacks on several communities. A former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, had asked President Bola Tinubu to end his trip to France and address the spate of insecurity in Nigeria. Atiku questioned Tinubu’s continued stay in the European country despite the spate of killings across Nigeria. “While Tinubu dines under chandeliers in the land of good governance, the country he governs is spiraling into chaos. Plateau has turned into a killing field — over 100 lives lost in relentless attacks,” his spokesman, Paul Ibe, said in a statement on April 17. Similarly, a former presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general elections, Mr Peter Obi, urged Tinubu to suspend his France trip and urgently return to Nigeria to address the deteriorating security situation, particularly in Plateau and Benue states. He also said the primary duty of any government is securing the lives and property of its citizens, and one wondered why the type of retreat was going on in another country where peace had been secured by their leaders, “while blood continues to flow in our country”. “I am compelled at this time in our lives as a nation to call on our retreating President’s attention to the security challenges at home, which entail that he immediately suspend his ongoing retreat in a foreign land and come home to address the overwhelming security situation across the country.” “In the two weeks you have been away, over 150 Nigerians have lost their lives to insecurity across Nigeria, especially in Plateau and Zamfara states. “I therefore urge Mr President to quickly suspend whatever he is doing in France and rush home to take responsibility by addressing these disturbing issues. That is the new Nigeria the nation seeks,” he said. But the Presidency noted that the Tinubu had maintained constant communication with key government officials, overseeing critical national matters, including directives to security chiefs to address emerging threats in some parts of the country.
