Nigerian Navy Hands Over Kidnap Suspects to Police

The Nigerian Navy on Wednesday handed over a three-man kidnapping gang to the Police, following their arrest in connection with the abduction of a naval officer, Lieutenant Cynthia Akor and other victims in Abuja. Commodore Oluseyi Oladipo, Commander of the Naval Unit in Abuja, said the officer was kidnapped on Friday, March 21, 2025, around Mpape, Abuja. He was later tracked to a forest hideout in Nasarawa State where she and other victims were rescued. Until the abduction, she was a staff of Armed Forces Radio, which is based at the Mogadishu Cantonment, off the Abuja-Nyanya Expressway. Sources confirmed that Lieutenant Akor was kidnapped in the evening of Friday March 21, 2025 while she was driving in a Toyota saloon car along with another passenger at approximately 7:45 p.m. The abduction was carried out by four armed assailants who opened fire before seizing the victims. The abducted individuals, including Gold Alfred, a resident of Bwari, and an unidentified person, were returning home after visiting a relative in Beggar Quarry, Mpape. According to Oladipo, the successful operation was carried out by a joint Quick Response Squad from the Naval Base, in collaboration with troops from the Guards Brigade of the Nigerian Army and personnel from the Nigeria Police Force. “In line with our mandate to provide security within the FCT and surrounding areas, we maintain strong synergy with other security agencies,” he said. “Despite ongoing efforts, the FCT continues to face threats including kidnappings, ‘one-chance’ abductions, and car thefts.” The base commander explained that after receiving the report of the officer’s abduction, a joint search-and-rescue mission was launched, supported by both human and technical intelligence. The victims were freed in the early hours of Sunday, March 23. Subsequent follow-up operations led to the arrest of two prime suspects and an accomplice, all of whom have confessed to kidnapping, cattle rustling, and other criminal activities. The suspects, along with relevant exhibits, were formally handed over to the FCT Police Command for further investigation and prosecution. Commodore Oladipo reaffirmed the Naval Unit’s commitment to the vision of the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla, to maintain a motivated naval force capable of ensuring security across Nigeria’s maritime and land-based environments. He also expressed appreciation to the Minister of the FCT, Barrister Nyesom Wike, for his leadership in enhancing security within the capital. “The Base will continue to collaborate with other security agencies to ensure that Abuja remains safe and secure,” he concluded.

Police Recover Three Headless Bodies Found in Ondo River

Photo: By Punch News The Ondo State Police Command has launched an investigation following the discovery of three headless bodies found floating in the river between Ore and Odigbo communities on Sunday. Police believe the bodies were likely dumped there by unidentified individuals from outside the state or carried to the location by the river’s current. The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Olayinka Alayande, explained that no missing persons report has been filed and no one has come forward to identify the victims since the incident was reported. According to the PPRO, the bodies were recovered and deposited at the state General Hospital morgue in Ore. Community leaders and stakeholders were contacted to assist in identifying the victims, but so far, no leads have emerged. “The DPO summoned all interest groups and asked anyone with useful information to come forward, but there has been no response,” Alayande said, further suggesting that the crime likely did not occur within Ondo State. The discovery has caused fear and unease in the local communities. A youth leader, identified only as Shileola, described the scene as horrifying. “I rushed to the site after hearing the news, hoping to identify the victims by their clothes or any clue, but there was nothing,” he said. Residents who discovered the bodies initially alerted security agencies, prompting the police response. While no concrete evidence has been found yet, there are growing suspicions that the victims may have been killed for ritual purposes before being dumped in the river. The incident has heightened tension in Ore and Odigbo, as locals await further updates from security agencies. Police investigations are ongoing, with authorities urging anyone with relevant information to come forward.

Nigeria Police detain Sowore

A presidential candidate of African Action Congress and human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has been detained by the Police Authority in Abuja following a viral video of policemen he posted on social media few weeks ago. Sowore was taking into custody following his refusal to agree to bail conditions offfered him by the Police. Sowore disclosed this shortly before his incarceration. “It is a wrap! “The Nigeria Police Force is holding me in custody until further notice, following my refusal to accept their illegal bail condition,” he wrote on his X handle formerly Twitter. Earlier in the day, Sowore had informed that the Police assigned to his case demanded for a level 16 civil servant and that he should surrender his international passport to perfect his bail condition. “The PoliceNG team assigned to my case has informed me that the DIG of FID, Dasuki Galandachi, has reevaluated my bail conditions, necessitating the production of a level 16 civil servant and the surrender of my international passport, a condition I have declined outright. “I refuse to participate in any arrangement that undermines my personal integrity. “Below is also the response of my lawyer, Femi Falana SAN to the ridiculous request of the Nigeria Police.” ‘Dear Hon DIG, ‘Thanks for reducing the bail condition of Mr. Omoyele Sowore to a surety of level 16. ‘However, I wish to point out that such bail condition has been declared illegal by the Court of Appeal in the case of Dasuki V. Director-General, S.S.S. [2020]10 NWLR PT.1731 PG. 136-143 where Adah JCA (now JSC) held as follows: ‘Let me quickly say that of concern it is to us that as a court we must be ready and sensitive enough not to allow or do anything that will run foul of the law. ‘The issue of involving civil servants or Public Officers in the Public Service of the Federation and the State in bail of people accused of criminal offences has never been the practice in Nigeria or any part of the civilized world. It was an oversight on our part to allow it in. ‘Our Civil and Public Service Rules do not have any room for it. Expecting a Level 16 Servant to own property worth N100,000,000, will be running counter to the Public Service Rules and by extension the war against corruption. ‘It is in this respect that I will act ex debito justitiae to ensure that the aspect of involving serving Public Servant below the status of Level 16 Officer in either the state or Public Service of the Federation or any of its agencies be removed and I so order.’
