Sowore Reacts to Being Declared Wanted by Lagos Police

Omoyele Sowore has responded to being declared wanted by the Lagos State Police, alleging that the move follows a failed attempt to ambush him. On social media, Sowore recounted a similar incident from 1994, writing: “In 1994, then-Lagos Police Commissioner James Danbaba, in connivance with the Vice-Chancellor and authorities at the University of Lagos, orchestrated an attempt on my life using campus gangs. When this attempt failed, he declared me wanted after violently arresting all the student union leaders and falsely charging them for armed robbery. They also expelled us from UNILAG. Danbaba was later arrested alongside Major Al Mustapha for his role in aiding General Sani Abacha in several deadly attacks on opposition figures including Kudirat Abiola and Alex Ibru. He died a miserable death years later!” Sowore said Nigeria’s Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, appears to be “following a similar dangerous path.” He claimed that officers were sent to ambush him earlier today and, when the attempt failed, the police issued the wanted notice. The Lagos State Police said Sowore is wanted in connection with plans to disrupt public peace and obstruct traffic on the Third Mainland Bridge amid protests over demolitions at Oworonshoki. Police Commissioner Moshood Jimoh stated that Sowore and others are under investigation for their alleged involvement in the unrest. Describing the declaration as politically motivated, Sowore noted that repeated attempts to reach the police commissioner went unanswered. He stressed that he intends to meet with the commissioner to resolve the matter. The development has once again highlighted the tense relationship between Sowore, a pro-democracy activist, and Nigerian authorities, drawing widespread attention across the country.

Police Explains Why Omoyele Sowore Was Arrested Over Abuja Protest

The Nigeria Police Force has clarified that activist Omoyele Sowore was arrested to ensure fairness in prosecuting those involved in Monday’s protest in Abuja. Force Public Relations Officer Benjamin Hundeyin told journalists on Thursday in Abuja that Sowore allegedly led protesters into a restricted area during a demonstration in support of the detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu. His arrest, Hundeyin said, was necessary to hold all participants, including their leader, accountable. “If we charge some people and leave out the person who led them into committing that act, that would not be fair. In the spirit of fair play and to ensure justice is served, Omoyele Sowore was arrested today,” he explained. The police emphasized that Sowore’s detention would not exceed the legal limit and that he would be arraigned in court the same day. “Like the others, he won’t spend up to 24 hours with us. Once we finalise the charges, he’ll be prosecuted immediately. If all goes as planned, he’ll be taken to court today,” Hundeyin added. Sowore was reportedly apprehended at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday shortly after meeting with Kanu during the latter’s ongoing terrorism trial.

Court Clears Sowore To Proceed With #FreeNnamdiKanuNow Protest After Police Request Rejected

The Federal High Court in Abuja has rejected an application by the Nigeria Police Force seeking to stop the planned “Free Nnamdi Kanu Now” protest scheduled for Monday, October 20, 2025. The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, had filed an ex parte motion through police lawyers to restrain activist and protest convener, Omoyele Sowore, from going ahead with the demonstration near the Presidential Villa in Abuja. However, Justice Umar declined to grant the police request, ruling that Sowore must first be served with a formal notice before any decision could be made. The judge subsequently adjourned the case until Tuesday for a full hearing. The ruling effectively allows the protest to proceed as planned on Monday, as there is currently no court order preventing it. Reacting to the decision, Sowore hailed the court’s refusal to halt the protest as a victory for democracy and free expression. “IGP Kayode Egbetokun dispatched police lawyers to sue me in an effort to stop the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest scheduled for Aso Rock Villa on Monday,” Sowore wrote on X. “But the judge refused to grant the motion and adjourned the case for proper hearing on Tuesday.” The protest, tagged #FreeNnamdiKanuNow, aims to demand the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, who has been in custody since 2021 despite multiple court rulings ordering his release. With the court’s ruling, Sowore and his supporters are expected to march toward the Presidential Villa as planned, setting the stage for a tense faceoff with security operatives. The final decision on the legality of the protest will be determined at the adjourned hearing on Tuesday.

FCT Police Suspend Enforcement Of Vehicle Tinted Glass Permit Pending Court Verdict

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has temporarily halted the enforcement of the vehicle tinted glass permit after receiving a court directive. FCT Police spokesperson Josephine Adeh told AIT, “Information reaching me from the office of the PRO is that the order has been received and the enforcement of the tinted permit is now on hold pending the court’s verdict.” She added that the suspension will remain in effect until the court delivers its judgment. “We are waiting for the verdict. We are not against the courts, and we will continue to wait until we get a verdict,” Adeh said. Adeh also clarified that the tinted glass permit was introduced for security reasons, noting that criminals had exploited vehicles with darkened windows to evade law enforcement. “The law was not made by us. We are enforcers. The policy was purely security-driven. Some criminals were using tinted vehicles to commit offences, making it difficult for law enforcement to identify suspects,” she explained.
