JUST IN: PDP Expels Wike, Fayose, Anyanwu

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expelled Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike, former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose, and former party secretary Samuel Anyanwu. The expulsion motion was presented by Chief Olabode George, former PDP National Vice Chairman (South), at the ongoing convention in Ibadan, Oyo State, and seconded by Hon. Samaila Burga, PDP Chairman in Bauchi State. Prior to the convention, Wike’s loyal faction had sought to halt the gathering through the courts. However, a High Court in Oyo ruled in favor of the party, allowing the convention to proceed. In the lead-up to the event, Mao Ohabunwa, chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Wike-led faction, dismissed the convention as unlawful and advised members to avoid attending. He described it as a “jamboree,” saying: “We have met as the national working committee of PDP and reviewed our activities. We have agreed to obey all court decisions on the Ibadan convention, so we are not part of the exercise. Ibadan is a public place; people can go for anything but not for a convention. Anyone going there in the name of the convention should consider it a jamboree. We won’t tolerate flagrant abuse of the constitution by some individuals in the name of a convention.” Abdulrahman Muhammad, the faction’s acting national chairman, also urged delegates to stay away, promising to continue mobilizing members across the 36 states and the FCT to maintain a strong and united PDP. Meanwhile, Wike praised party members for defending the PDP in their local areas, vowing to uphold the rule of law and support those loyal to the party constitution. He added: “I am happy with your concern about the party in your respective areas. I will continue to support you people; I won’t betray you people.”

Federal High Court Halts PDP Convention Amid Conflicting Oyo Court Order

The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to suspend its national convention, initially scheduled for November 15–16 in Ibadan, Oyo State. Justice Peter Lifu delivered the ruling in a suit filed by former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido, also directing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) not to supervise or recognize any PDP convention held without including Lamido as a contestant. The court found that Lamido was unfairly denied the opportunity to obtain a nomination form to contest for the position of PDP National Chairman, a violation of the party’s constitution and internal regulations. Justice Lifu emphasized that the party has a duty to ensure fair access for members to pursue leadership positions. Accordingly, the judge ordered that the convention be put on hold to allow Lamido to obtain the nomination form, campaign, and mobilize support. “Before any convention is held, the PDP is to make nomination forms available to the plaintiff. The convention is hereby put on hold for the plaintiff to campaign and mobilize supporters,” Justice Lifu stated. This decision follows a similar ruling by Justice Lifu on November 11, which also restrained the PDP from holding the convention. Lamido, through his lawyer Jephthah Njikonye (SAN), had filed an ex parte motion seeking an interim injunction to prevent the event, arguing that moving forward without him would violate the party constitution and deny him the chance to contest for the chairmanship. Justice Lifu noted that Lamido’s application had merit and referred to an earlier October 31 ruling by Justice James Omotosho, which also halted the convention and restrained INEC from participating. However, the PDP faces a contradictory order from the Oyo State High Court in Ibadan. Justice A. L. Akintola had approved the party’s convention in response to an ex parte application by PDP member Folahan Adelabi, instructing INEC to attend and monitor the election of new national officers. The conflicting court orders have created uncertainty over whether the PDP convention can proceed as planned.

Saraki Advises PDP to Postpone Ibadan Convention to Avoid Deepening Party Crisis

Former Senate President Bukola Saraki has called on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to halt its planned National Convention scheduled for November 15–16, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State. In a statement personally signed after meeting with members of the PDP Board of Trustees (BoT) Reconciliation Team led by Hassan Adamu, Saraki warned that proceeding with the convention amid ongoing legal disputes could plunge the party deeper into crisis. He urged the PDP to establish a Caretaker Committee to temporarily manage its affairs and restore stability. Saraki expressed regret that despite the selfless efforts of many party members, the convention has become entangled in political and legal controversies. The former Kwara State governor also cautioned that the situation poses a serious threat not only to the PDP but to Nigeria’s democracy. “It is clear that going ahead with the National Convention in Ibadan on November 15–16, 2025, will only serve to further fuel the present crisis. Therefore, going ahead with the Convention as scheduled is a waste of efforts. It does not have my support,” Saraki stated. He further explained that conflicting court orders regarding the convention have created uncertainty over its legitimacy, adding that no one can guarantee that the exercise or its outcome would be upheld.

Court Blocks PDP From Holding Ibadan Convention Again

The Federal High Court in Abuja has once again stopped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from holding its National Convention, which was scheduled to take place in Ibadan, Oyo State, on November 15 and 16. Justice Peter Lifu issued the order on Tuesday while ruling on an application filed by former Jigawa State governor, Sule Lamido, who challenged his exclusion from the party’s chairmanship race. Lamido told the court that the PDP leadership refused to sell him the nomination form for the chairmanship position, effectively barring him from participating in the upcoming convention. The judge ruled in his favour, stating that the party had failed to comply with mandatory legal procedures for conducting its convention, including publishing the timetable for members as required by law. Justice Lifu held that the balance of convenience tilted toward Lamido, stressing that he would suffer greater harm if unjustly excluded from the process. He emphasised that due process must be strictly followed in line with the Constitution, warning that any disregard for lawful procedures threatens the foundation of democracy. The judge further noted that under Section 6 of the 1999 Constitution, courts are duty-bound to dispense justice without fear or favour, adding that failure to do so could lead to anarchy. Consequently, Justice Lifu restrained the PDP from proceeding with the planned convention and prohibited the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from supervising, monitoring, or recognising the outcome of any such event.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has suspended its National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, along with three other top officials, for a period of one month. The National Director of Legal Services has also been directed to oversee the legal department pending the committee’s decision. In a related development, the party expressed displeasure over a recent judgment of the Federal High Court in Abuja delivered by Justice Kolawole Omotosho, describing it as a setback to Nigeria’s democratic process. National Publicity Secretary Hon. Debo Ologunagba stated that the ruling does not hinder the PDP from proceeding with preparations for its forthcoming National Convention, where new national officers will be elected to lead the party for the next four years. He cited a recent Supreme Court judgment affirming the supremacy of political parties in managing their internal affairs, urging members and organs of the PDP to remain united and focused on the upcoming convention. “The PDP remains firmly committed to the rule of law,” Ologunagba noted. “Our legal team has been directed to appeal the judgment immediately, in line with our dedication to upholding democracy and defending the rights of all political parties in Nigeria.”
