Lagos Records Over Two Million Passengers on Blue Line Rail

The Lagos State Government has revealed that over Two Million passengers have been transported on the Blue Line Rail since its launch, while state-run buses move an average of 42,000 commuters daily. Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, disclosed this during the Year 2025 Ministerial Press Briefing held at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre, Alausa. The event marked the second anniversary of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second term, showcasing major strides in the transport sector under the THEMES Plus Agenda. Osiyemi highlighted that the Lagos State Transport Policy, launched in May 2024, is now in its implementation phase, focusing on inclusivity, safety, affordability, and sustainability. On rail developments, he noted that Phase I of the Blue Line (Marina to Mile 2) has served over two million passengers, with Phase II (Mile 2 to Okokomaiko) in progress, adding that Phase I of the Red Line (Agbado to Oyingbo) is now operational with eight stations and additional rolling stocks procured, while Phase II (Oyingbo to link Blue Line at National Theatre) is underway. In the State-owned bus operations, he revealed that over 60 million commuters have been served since 2019, with daily ridership exceeding 40,000, noting that plans are on to deploy new buses with Quality Bus Corridors under construction. The Abule Egba Bus Terminal has also been commissioned. For water transport, Osiyemi stated that 15 locally-built Omibus Ferries have been launched and are in operation, with the Ijegun Egba Terminal now open. He said the OMI EKO project, in partnership with the French Development Agency (AFD), will deliver 25 terminals and 78 electric ferries. Over 280,000 passengers have used ferry services in the past year, and 12 boats have been upgraded to meet safety standards. On road infrastructure and traffic management, the Commissioner said 49 junction improvement projects have been completed, including ongoing ones at Ikorodu, Iju, and Allen-Opebi-Toyin. He added that solar-powered Traffic Signal Lights, road markings covering 67.9km, new medians, laybys, and 3,941 parking slots have also been provided. Additionally, Osiyemi announced that the deployed Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras have detected over 470,000 traffic violations, stating that the Vehicle Inspection Service issued over one million roadworthiness certificates, while LASDRI trained more than 32,000 drivers. He also mentioned that LASTMA has trained over 800 personnel, evacuated over 100 broken-down vehicles, and revived its school safety advocacy programme across 59 schools.

The driver and conductor of a BRT bus have fled for their lives, abandoning passengers to their fate, as a BRT bus caught fire at Maryland, Lagos State, on Saturday morning.smileyOur correspondent, who was at the scene of the incident, said that the vehicle departed from Ikorodu en route to CMS when the sad incident occurred. As of the time this report was filed, emergency responders, including officers of the Nigeria Police Force, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), fire services, and local security personnel, arrived at the scene to contain the blaze. Firefighters at the scene.One of the passengers on the bus told our correspondent the fire started as smoke from the driver’s side. According to her, the passengers initially thought the smoke emanated from other buses; however, the slight smoke soon worsened, immediately sending them into panic mode. “As soon as we saw that the smoke grew bigger, we immediately rushed off the bus before the fire ignited”, she said, adding that none of the passengers sustained any injury. She added that the driver fled the scene immediately after the fire started. “The driver and the conductor ran away. They didn’t even wait to see what would happen to us. “Definitely, they knew what happened. They knew the bus was bad before putting it on the road and risking our lives,” she alleged.

Lagos commissioner leads officials on redline rail passenger ride 

As part of the ongoing trial phase, the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, today, led officials from the Ministry of Transportation on a non-fee paying ride aboard the Redline Rail. The journey, which took place between Ikeja and Agbado, marked a significant milestone in the testing process. For the past six weeks, the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has conducted test runs without passengers, achieving a 90 percent success rate.  This current phase, involving non-fee paying passengers, aims to study passenger behaviour along the corridor and provide LAMATA with valuable insights to fine-tune the operations before the official launch of passenger services. The train arrived at Ikeja Train Station at approximately 1:19 pm, boarding passengers before making brief stops at Agege and Iju stations, and ultimately arriving at Agbado Train Station at 1:47 PM. The return journey from Agbado commenced at 2:50 PM, with the train reaching Ikeja at 3:19 PM. Key officials who joined the Commissioner on the exercise include the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Olawale Musa; the Managing Director of LAMATA, Engr. Abimbola Akinajo; the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Transportation, Hon. Toyin Aremu and Directors in the Ministry of Transportation amongst others.
