Abia Taskforce Arrests Four Fake NURTW Officials For Extortion And Illegal Levies

The Abia State Harmonized Taskforce (ASHTF) has apprehended four individuals pretending to be members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) for allegedly extorting money, intimidating citizens, and enforcing illegal levies along Port Harcourt Road in Aba and nearby areas. The suspects were caught on Thursday at Flyover Junction near Ugwunagbo during an operation approved by the Aba Area Coordinator of ASHTF, Mr. Uche Wogu. ASHTF spokesperson Miracle Chukwunenye said the arrests followed multiple complaints from market women, traders, and tricycle operators about the unlawful activities of a group led by one Mr. Ahuama. “Upon arrival, the taskforce, in collaboration with the police, arrested Mr. Ahuama and three accomplices who were extorting money from unsuspecting traders and tricycle operators under the pretense of being NURTW officials,” Chukwunenye explained. Investigations showed that the suspects had impounded around 20 tricycles that morning and collected cash from the owners before being intercepted. They reportedly resisted arrest and attacked the operatives and police officers but were eventually subdued and taken into custody. Chukwunenye reminded the public that Abia State enforces a strict No-Cash-at-Hand revenue system, emphasizing that no government personnel is permitted to collect money directly from citizens.

NURTW Chairman Sego Dismisses Voter Threat Allegations, Blames Political Rivals

Mustapha Sego, Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), has denied claims that he threatened voters in Lagos ahead of the 2027 elections. He confirmed that the Department of State Services (DSS) invited him over a viral video, but described the allegations as “false and baseless.” In the video, Sego, speaking in Yoruba to union members, warned that mistakes from the 2023 elections would not be repeated in 2027 and stressed support for the All Progressives Congress (APC). “Anybody who makes any mistakes in 2027 will be dealt with. Let them know that the APC is the party you’ll vote for, anybody who refuses to do so will meet us,” he said. Sego clarified that his remarks were directed only at union members and not meant as threats to voters. “I have always been a man of peace. Everyone has the right to freely associate and choose their political affiliations, and I fully respect that,” he said. He also claimed that the allegations were part of a scheme by rival union members to destabilize his leadership in Lagos State. “There is always opposition in every role. This is clearly an attempt to undermine me and the NURTW in Lagos,” Sego added.

Outrage as NURTW Official Shamsideen Adio Seen Brutally Assaulting Dispatch Rider in Lagos

By Kamal Yalwa | Published: September 19, 2025 A disturbing video circulating on social media has sparked public outrage after showing Shamsideen Adio, a senior official of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), violently assaulting a dispatch rider in broad daylight. The incident took place on Wednesday, September 17, on Tapa Street in Lagos Island, and was reportedly triggered after Adio’s vehicle was allegedly blocked by the rider. Adio, popularly known as “Shamelon,” was seen in the video — shared by journalist Chris Nwandu — viciously punching the rider, joined by a group of men believed to be his colleagues. The assault continued as the rider was thrown to the ground, stripped of his belongings, and nearly undressed by the attackers, while a crowd of bystanders looked on without intervening. “This is not the first time,” Nwandu wrote on Facebook, alongside the footage. “He’s notorious for beating up Marwa (commercial tricycle) operators. Just days ago, he assaulted another rider so badly the man ended up in the general hospital.” According to sources familiar with Adio’s conduct, the NURTW official has a long history of violence against road users — particularly commercial riders who cross his path. The recent attack has raised serious concerns about the safety of dispatch and commercial riders in Lagos, many of whom already face risks from traffic accidents, harassment, and extortion. “This is a cry for justice,” Nwandu added. “We don’t know who his next victim will be. State authorities must act now.” Calls are growing for the Lagos State government to open a formal investigation into the incident and ensure those responsible are held accountable. Advocacy groups are also urging the leadership of the NURTW to address the allegations against Adio and take disciplinary action if confirmed. Dispatch riders remain a critical part of Lagos’ transportation and logistics network, especially in a city plagued by gridlock. However, Wednesday’s incident underscores the ongoing vulnerability of frontline workers who often operate with little protection. As of press time, neither the Lagos State government nor the NURTW has released an official statement regarding the attack.
