A Brazil based Nigerian businessman Uche Franklin Onyekwere has been arrested by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) at the arrival hall of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) Ikeja-Lagos for concealing parcels of cocaine in his private part and soles of his footwear.   Onyekwere was arrested on Thursday 29th January 2026 during the inward clearance of South African Airways flight passengers arriving from Brazil via Johannesburg following processed intelligence. When the 47-year-old suspect was taken for full body scan, the result confirmed illicit drug concealment.   As a result, he was subjected to a strip search, during which a big parcel of white powdery substance, which later tested positive for cocaine, was discovered wrapped around his right thigh. A further search revealed two additional wraps of the same substance concealed in the sole of a pair of flat shoes worn by the suspect. In all, three large wraps of cocaine, with a gross weight of 1.60 kilograms, were recovered from his body and footwear.   During a preliminary interview, the suspect revealed he purchased the illicit drug consignment in Brazil with the intention to resell the cocaine in Nigeria in order to raise capital to boost his business and also finance the naming ceremony of his newly born child. The suspect who lives in Rua Ever, Mulariuha, São Paulo, claimed that he has been living in Brazil since 2008 while he has been operating a toy business for about nine years.   At the Tincan seaport in Lagos, a total of 55 jumbo bags of Canadian Loud, a strong strain of cannabis with a gross weight of 1,183 kilograms imported from Montreal, Canada in a container was discovered on Wednesday 28th January during a joint examination of the shipment by NDLEA officers, Customs and other security agencies. The illicit consignments were hidden inside two vehicles: a Hyundai SUV and a Toyota Matrix car.   In Niger state, NDLEA operatives acting on credible intelligence in the early hours of Tuesday 26th January intercepted a long truck marked T 31589 LA along Dei-Dei Abuja expressway where they arrested the trio of Andy Chidogu, 49; Kenneth Ogene, 45; and Sadiq Olanrewaju, 27, for conveying 176 bags of skunk, a strain of cannabis weighing 2,735 kilograms and 1 kilogram of Colorado, a synthetic cannabis, concealed in the truck.   Investigations revealed that Kenneth Ogene who drives the truck left Lagos on 23rd January loaded with 800 bags of flour to Ekpoma, Edo State and arrived the following day 24th January. Drug war: Marwa Sets 2026 Operational Targets for NDLEA Commanders

Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), has set the tone for the 2026 operational goals with a high-level strategic meeting with directors, commanders and heads of formations during which he charged them to sustain the current momentum in the war against illicit substances by going all out to dismantle drug cartels and intensify sensitization efforts across the country. Marwa gave the charge at the annual review and planning meeting that brought together, at the NDLEA National Headquarters in Abuja, the top echelon of the Agency, including: members of the Management; Zonal Commanders; Commanders from the 36 states and the FCT; Commanders of Seaports and International Airports; the Marine Unit Commander; Commanders of the Strike Force and the Special Operations Units, among others. Addressing the Commanders, Marwa emphasized that the Agency has kicked off the year on a strong footing, building on the record-breaking successes of previous years. He noted that 2026 would be a year of unprecedented consolidation especially in the areas of Drug Supply Reduction (DSR) and Drug Demand Reduction (DDR). “The results we achieved last year were significant, but we cannot afford to rest on our oars. Our 2026 goals are clear: we are here to completely disrupt the financial lifelines of drug cartels and ensure that every community in Nigeria is sensitized against the scourge of substance abuse”, he declared. During the session, he directed the various Commands to ensure a seamless execution of the 2026 strategic work plan. According to him, “When I first assumed office, I made certain declarations about the direction of this Agency and the resolve to confront drug barons and kingpins. Looking back, the progress achieved is the result of your collective efforts, and all glory belongs to God. “We have now successfully concluded five years, which passed remarkably quickly. While we acknowledge the achievements recorded during this period, we must not rest on our past successes. Rather, we must consolidate these gains and aim for even greater outcomes. Today, the Agency commands increased respect, both locally and internationally, and you should be proud to identify yourselves anywhere as officers and men of this Agency. “The renewal of my tenure by the President is largely a reflection of your work. While I may issue directives, real impact comes from seizures made, arrests effected, and convictions secured in the field. Without these results, there would be nothing to communicate to the public. For this reason, I sincerely appreciate your diligence, commitment, and hard work. “This year, we are here to set clear targets. Directors have already submitted their proposed objectives, but these will only be complete with input from commanders. Discipline and professional conduct must remain central to our operations. “Operational professionalism and zero tolerance for compromise are non-negotiable. Commanders must ensure thorough surveillance and planning before any operation. Where operational capacity is insufficient, commanders must request reinforcement rather than risk avoidable casualties. Advocacy and sensitization efforts have recorded encouraging progress, particularly in schools and communities nationwide. These efforts must be intensified. “State Drug Control Committees must be strengthened across all states, with efforts extended down to local government and ward levels. This year, all states must have functional committees. I urge all commanders to remain focused, professional, and committed to the mandate of the Agency. Together, we will continue to strengthen our impact and uphold the confidence reposed in us.” The NDLEA boss reassured the public that the Agency remains more committed than ever to protecting Nigerian youths and families from the drug scourge. He said the Agency’s strong footing at the start of 2026 is a signal to drug cartels that there will be no vacuum or breathing space for their illicit trade. He encouraged Nigerians to remain vigilant and continue providing useful information to the Agency, reminding all that the fight against substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking is a collective responsibility.

NDLEA Arrests Notorious Drug Kingpin Kanmo-Kanmo After 12-Year Manhunt

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has captured Lekan Jimoh, popularly called “Kanmo-Kanmo,” a feared drug baron who had eluded authorities for more than a decade over the killing of three NDLEA officers. According to the agency, Jimoh was arrested on Friday after operatives traced him to a hideout in Owode, Ogun State. Tactical teams moved in and took him into custody, bringing to an end a 12-year pursuit marked by violence, escapes, and repeated clashes with law enforcement. The arrest was disclosed on Sunday by the NDLEA’s Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, who said officers recovered 69 kilograms of skunk, a cannabis variant, from the suspect during the operation. Jimoh has long been linked to large-scale drug trafficking and was known for mobilising armed thugs to resist arrest. His name became infamous on June 15, 2014, when NDLEA operatives attempting to apprehend him were attacked by a mob allegedly organised by him. The incident led to the deaths of three officers, including Rabiu Usman Kazaure. Although Jimoh escaped at the time, the agency vowed to hunt him down. He again slipped through NDLEA’s dragnet on August 12, 2023, when operatives stormed his residence in Ado-Odo, Ogun State. While he managed to flee, officers recovered 139 sacks of skunk weighing about 1,922 kilograms. The property, said to have been used as a storage facility for drugs, was later forfeited to the Federal Government following court proceedings. The agency described his eventual arrest as a major milestone, stressing that fugitives would be pursued no matter how long it takes. Meanwhile, NDLEA operatives recorded several other arrests and seizures nationwide. In Edo State, officers raided the Arokpa forest in Uzebba, Owan West Local Government Area, arresting 53-year-old Isihor Edika and confiscating 320 kilograms of skunk and cannabis seeds. In Abuja, a 44-year-old woman, Yinka Agboola, was arrested over the online sale of illicit drugs. A search of her home in the Kaura area led to the recovery of 2.2 kilograms of skunk and quantities of cannabis oil allegedly produced in her kitchen. Another suspect, Tordue Pius Richard, 30, was arrested at his residence in Abacha Estate with 148.3 grams of cocaine and skunk. In Lagos, NDLEA operatives seized 118.1 kilograms of skunk from Dauda Kareem and Saheed Obisesan in the Fadeyi area of Mushin, while 116 kilograms of the same substance were recovered from a warehouse at the New Market area of Enugu State. Along the Onitsha–Asaba expressway in Delta State, two suspects, Zaharadeen Yahaya, 25, and Sanusi Maman, 23, were intercepted while transporting large quantities of controlled substances, including tramadol pills, codeine syrup, diazepam, swinol, and molly. In Oyo State, Adetunji Ahmed Abayomi, 33, was arrested at Moniya, Ibadan, with 321 litres of skuchies and 2.5 kilograms of colorado, a synthetic cannabis strain. Another suspect, Rasheed Ajao, 28, was also caught in Ibadan with assorted cannabis products weighing a total of 9.696 kilograms. In a separate raid at Agbeni, officers recovered over 52,000 pills of tramadol and bromazepam from a store belonging to Orji Edwin, who is currently at large. In Kwara State, NDLEA operatives raided a residential building in the Gamo area of Ilorin, seizing 42 bags of skunk weighing 387.40 kilograms. At the Apapa Port in Lagos, a joint operation involving NDLEA, Customs, and other security agencies uncovered 157,519 bottles of codeine syrup concealed in a container. In Jigawa State, an ex-convict, Gaddafi Ammani, 26, was arrested alongside his accomplice, Ahmed Sani, 32, at Nassarawa GRA, Ringim Local Government Area. Ammani reportedly attempted to escape by jumping across rooftops and threatened officers with a machete, injuring one operative before he was overpowered. NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd), praised officers across various commands for their efforts, urging them to sustain the momentum in the agency’s fight against drug trafficking. He described Jimoh’s arrest as a clear signal to drug lords and fugitives that justice may be delayed but will not be denied.

NDLEA Seizes 20kg of Cocaine On Brazil-Bound MV Nord Bosporus At Apapa Seaport

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intercepted 20 kilograms of cocaine aboard the Brazil-bound vessel MV Nord Bosporus (IMO 9760110) at Lagos’ Apapa seaport. The illegal substance was discovered concealed under the ship’s cargo on Sunday, November 16, 2025. Following the seizure, NDLEA detained the vessel’s Master, Captain Quino Eugene Corpus, along with 19 Filipino crew members. NDLEA spokesman Femi Babafemi said the agency obtained a court order to hold the ship and crew for further investigation. “The motion ex parte in suit number FHC/L/MISC/1306/25 was presented before Justice Musa Kakaki of the Federal High Court, Lagos, who on Thursday, November 20, 2025, approved an initial 14-day detention of the vessel, Captain Corpus, and the 19 Filipino crew members,” Babafemi explained. Preliminary investigations revealed that the MV Nord Bosporus was visiting Nigeria and Africa for the first time, having primarily transported coal between Colombia and Brazil. Captain Corpus has reportedly been with the vessel for just three months. This seizure follows a similar case six months ago when 10 Thai sailors aboard the MV Chayanee Naree were convicted for attempting to smuggle 32.9 kilograms of cocaine from Brazil through Apapa seaport. The sailors and vessel were fined $4.3 million by the Federal High Court in Lagos on May 15, 2025. NDLEA Chairman Brigadier General Buba Marwa (retd.) commended the Apapa Command and the Directorate of Seaport Operations for the successful operation, calling it evidence of the agency’s growing capacity to secure Nigeria’s borders. Marwa warned international drug cartels and their local collaborators that Nigeria will not be used as a transit point for illegal drugs, emphasizing the agency’s zero-tolerance policy. He also cautioned Nigerians involved with foreign syndicates, saying they would face strict legal consequences. Between January 2023 and March 2024, the NDLEA reportedly seized a total of 207,976 kilograms of hard drugs across the country’s seaports. In the first quarter of 2024, 14 suspects were arrested with 16.69 kilograms of cocaine and 11,622.229 kilograms of cannabis sativa, while a total of 167 people were arrested with 196,336.99 kilograms of various drugs from January to October 2023.

Tuoyo Ideh Alleges Brutal Beating By NDLEA During Proxy Nightclub Raid

Former Big Brother Naija contestant Tuoyo Ideh has accused NDLEA operatives of assaulting him during a raid at Proxy Nightclub in Victoria Island, Lagos. The raid, which occurred in the early hours of Sunday, October 26, led to the arrest of socialite Pretty Mike and over 100 guests. In a video shared on Instagram Monday night, Tuoyo said he was at the club as a promoter, helping clients book tables, when officers, accompanied by military personnel, stormed the venue. He claimed that even after passing the initial security check, he was forcibly taken into custody with other patrons. While detained, he said he was beaten with sticks and ordered to roll on the ground. The assault reportedly only ended after a female officer intervened, though he was still made to perform frog jumps despite severe pain. “I’m a promoter; if you see me outside, it’s for business. I hadn’t even been inside 30 minutes when everyone was told to go down. I saw people in black uniforms and military personnel. They took our phones, searched me from head to toe, even my socks, and found nothing. Then they made us sit outside on the floor, which was humiliating,” he said. “After a while, a woman pointed at me. Five men rushed me, slapped me, and one said, ‘Na you go post abi? Shoot him.’ They hit me with sticks, kicked me, and slapped me. I was rolling on the floor struggling to breathe. I’ve never been beaten like that in my life.” He added: “Nigeria finally happened to me 💔 😥🥺. I can’t even stand or lie down properly. The beating left my legs, hands, back, and head in unbearable pain. Yesterday, I felt completely helpless. The intimidation and humiliation were overwhelming. We live in a country where human rights and freedom of speech are routinely ignored.”   View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Tuoyo Ideh (@itstuoyoofficial)
