Breaking: Lagbaja: President Tinubu postpones FEC meeting

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces, has ordered rescheduling the Federal Executive Council meeting till another date to be announced. Initially scheduled for today, the council meeting was postponed in honour of Lt. General Taoreed Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff, who passed away on Tuesday night. General Lagbaja served as the Chief of Army Staff from June 19, 2023, till his death on November 5, 2024. President Tinubu also ordered flags to be flown at half-staff nationwide for seven days in honour of the departed general. Earlier today, President Tinubu expressed his heartfelt condolences to the Lagbaja family and the Nigerian Armed Forces. He wished Lt. General Lagbaja eternal peace and honoured his significant contributions to the nation.

NFF holds Annual General Assembly in Asaba

All is set for the 2024 Annual General Assembly of the Nigeria Football Federation taking place in Asaba on Friday, with all delegates having arrived in the Delta State capital by the evening of Thursday. The NFF Annual General Assembly is the biggest assemblage of football administrators and stakeholders in the country in a given year, and serves as the melting pot of interplay of ideas and eventual formulation of policies and rules and regulations that govern the administration and organization of the game nationally for the succeeding one year. The plenary welcomes chairmen and secretaries of Football Associations in the 36 States and the FCT, chairmen and secretaries of the Nigeria Premier Football League, Nigeria National League, Nigeria Women Football League and the Nationwide League One, as well as chairmen and secretaries of the referees’ association, players’ union and coaches’ association. This group makes up the Congress. Members of the NFF Executive Committee and Management will be in attendance, with former NFF Presidents and General Secretaries also welcome. The Honourable Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh, is set to be the special guest. Nigeria’s Member of the hallowed FIFA Council, Mr. Amaju Melvin Pinnick will be in attendance, as well as a representative of the West African Football Union (WAFU B) to witness proceedings. The Executive Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Francis Oborevwori will declare the General Assembly open, and a number of chieftains of the Delta State Government and some other dignitaries, alongside observers and representatives of the media, will witness the opening ceremony. Venue is the Unity Hall of the Delta State Government House.

President Tinubu meets with King Charles III at Buckingham Palace 

President Bola Tinubu was warmly received on Wednesday in London by His Majesty King Charles III at Buckingham Palace for a private meeting, highlighting the enduring and cherished relationship between Nigeria and the United Kingdom.   This will be the two leaders’ first meeting since they met in Dubai at the COP 28 Climate Summit last year. The latest meeting was at the King’s request. Both leaders discussed global and regional matters of shared priority, focusing on the urgent and complex challenge of climate change.   President Tinubu and His Majesty also explored opportunities for collaboration in anticipation of the upcoming COP 29 Summit in Azerbaijan and the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Samoa.  President Tinubu reiterated Nigeria’s firm commitment to addressing climate change in a manner that aligns with the country’s energy security objectives whilst affirming Nigeria’s readiness to adopt global strategies for sustainability.  During their dialogue, the two leaders shared ideas for innovative approaches to climate financing and funding, expressing mutual interest in strengthening partnerships by harnessing Nigeria’s leadership position in Africa and the Commonwealth.
