Lagos State to Close Marine Bridge for 15 Days for Urgent Repairs

Lagos State Government has announced the temporary closure of Marine Bridge in Ijora, Apapa, to allow urgent maintenance work by the Federal Ministry of Works. The Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, said the bridge will be closed for 15 days, from Saturday, October 11, to Saturday, October 25, 2025. The maintenance will be carried out in two phases to minimise traffic disruption and ensure smooth vehicle diversions. Phase I (October 11–18) will affect the section from the foot of Marine Bridge at Lawani Oguntayo Road (by UBA, inbound Apapa/Costain). Motorists from Ijora Olopa heading to Apapa will be diverted via the Ijora Causeway Access Ramp by Omni Retail Company, connecting to Ijora 7up, then onto Lilypond Access Ramp. Phase II (October 19–25) will cover the stretch between Ijora Badia and Lilypond Access Ramp (inbound Apapa). Vehicles from Ijora Olopa heading to Apapa and Costain will use a 500-metre contraflow lane before rejoining the main carriageway. Traffic from Apapa towards Costain, Lagos Island, or Ijora Olopa will maintain through traffic but will briefly share the contraflow lane near the construction site. Osiyemi urged road users to cooperate with traffic management personnel, explaining that the closure is necessary to replace the bridge’s underlying bearings, which are vital for its structural integrity and safety. He assured that traffic officers will be stationed along diversion routes to manage movement and reduce congestion. “The temporary closure is essential for the long-term safety and durability of Marine Bridge. This project highlights the ongoing collaboration between Lagos State and the Federal Government to improve infrastructure and ensure safer roads for all,” Osiyemi said.

Lagos, Gbajabiamila Move to Rebuld Randle General Hospital

The Lagos State Government on Monday announced the full reconstruction and upgrade of the historic Randle General Hospital, Surulere, into a four-floor ultramodern healthcare facility. The announcement was made at a stakeholders and community engagement session held at the Femi Gbajabiamila General Hospital, Surulere, where health officials, community leaders and residents were briefed on the project’s scope, impact and interim service arrangements. Delivering the keynote address, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, Dr. (Mrs.) Kemi Ogunyemi, described the project as “a total transformation, not just a renovation,” aimed at restoring Randle’s legacy as one of the foremost secondary healthcare centres in Lagos. She said the hospital’s existing structure had aged beyond repair and could no longer serve the rising population or address the evolving health demands of Surulere residents. “Our people deserve facilities that meet international standards, and that is what this project will deliver,” she declared. According to Ogunyemi, the new four-floor facility will feature accident and emergency services, theatres, laboratories, wards, staff lounges, and VIP recovery spaces, alongside advanced diagnostic equipment including CT scan and MRI machines. She said the design would ensure patient dignity, faster service delivery and improved staff working conditions. The Special Adviser commended Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, Chief of Staff to the President, for sponsoring the project, noting that his philanthropic support was consistent with his commitment to Universal Health Coverage. “From donating the Femi Gbajabiamila General Hospital to funding this new Randle project, his contributions reflect an unwavering dedication to the well-being of his people,” she said. She assured residents that while the new facility was under construction, healthcare services would be seamlessly provided at the Femi Gbajabiamila General Hospital. “Nobody will be left without care. This interim arrangement ensures that Surulere continues to receive essential services without interruption,” she explained. Ogunyemi added that the project aligns with the THEMES Plus Agenda of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, particularly in strengthening health systems and environmental resilience. “This is about lives saved, futures secured and communities strengthened,” she affirmed, urging Surulere residents to see the hospital as a shared legacy. Special Adviser to the Governor on Housing, Barrister Barakat Odunuga-Bakare, described the project as “a great step forward” for Surulere. She said the stakeholders’ engagement was crucial to prevent misinformation and ensure that the community remained carried along throughout the construction phase. In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Primary Health Care Board, Dr. Ibrahim Mustafa, emphasised that the reconstruction marks a defining moment for Surulere and the State. He described it as “an investment in health and in the future.” Mustafa appealed to the community for patience and cooperation during the transition, stressing that the temporary relocation of services was a necessary sacrifice for long-term benefit. “Healthcare delivery will not stop, but we need your understanding as we build a stronger and modern facility,” he said.

Outrage as NURTW Official Shamsideen Adio Seen Brutally Assaulting Dispatch Rider in Lagos

By Kamal Yalwa | Published: September 19, 2025 A disturbing video circulating on social media has sparked public outrage after showing Shamsideen Adio, a senior official of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), violently assaulting a dispatch rider in broad daylight. The incident took place on Wednesday, September 17, on Tapa Street in Lagos Island, and was reportedly triggered after Adio’s vehicle was allegedly blocked by the rider. Adio, popularly known as “Shamelon,” was seen in the video — shared by journalist Chris Nwandu — viciously punching the rider, joined by a group of men believed to be his colleagues. The assault continued as the rider was thrown to the ground, stripped of his belongings, and nearly undressed by the attackers, while a crowd of bystanders looked on without intervening. “This is not the first time,” Nwandu wrote on Facebook, alongside the footage. “He’s notorious for beating up Marwa (commercial tricycle) operators. Just days ago, he assaulted another rider so badly the man ended up in the general hospital.” According to sources familiar with Adio’s conduct, the NURTW official has a long history of violence against road users — particularly commercial riders who cross his path. The recent attack has raised serious concerns about the safety of dispatch and commercial riders in Lagos, many of whom already face risks from traffic accidents, harassment, and extortion. “This is a cry for justice,” Nwandu added. “We don’t know who his next victim will be. State authorities must act now.” Calls are growing for the Lagos State government to open a formal investigation into the incident and ensure those responsible are held accountable. Advocacy groups are also urging the leadership of the NURTW to address the allegations against Adio and take disciplinary action if confirmed. Dispatch riders remain a critical part of Lagos’ transportation and logistics network, especially in a city plagued by gridlock. However, Wednesday’s incident underscores the ongoing vulnerability of frontline workers who often operate with little protection. As of press time, neither the Lagos State government nor the NURTW has released an official statement regarding the attack.
