US Stops Immigration And Citizenship Processing For 19 Countries Over Security Concerns

The US government has suspended the processing of immigration and citizenship applications for nationals of 19 countries, including Afghanistan, Yemen and Haiti, according to an internal memo made public on Tuesday, in what officials describe as a major escalation of its migration crackdown. US authorities said the pause is aimed at strengthening vetting procedures. The document stressed the role of the US Citizenship and Immigration Services in blocking potential security threats and ensuring that screening processes place American safety first, citing the recent attack as an example of the risks linked to rushed approvals. On November 26, Trump announced plans to “permanently pause migration from all Third World Countries to allow the US system to fully recover.” Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem also pushed for tougher action, calling for broader bans on more countries. “I just met with the President. I am recommending a full travel ban on every damn country that’s been flooding our nation with killers, leeches, and entitlement junkies.” In addition to the newly affected countries, existing travel restrictions already cover Burundi, Chad, the Republic of Congo, Cuba, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Iran, Laos, Libya, Myanmar, Sierra Leone, Togo and Turkmenistan. Meanwhile, reports emerged of a planned large-scale immigration enforcement operation in Minnesota targeting Somali immigrants, a move that has sparked strong opposition from local leaders. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey insisted that the city’s support for the Somali community and all immigrants remains “rock solid and unwavering,” adding that state police would not cooperate with the operation.

Nigeria Immigration Service Begins Nationwide Crackdown On Visa Overstays After Amnesty

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has announced the start of nationwide enforcement against foreigners who have overstayed their visas or breached immigration regulations, following the conclusion of the Federal Government’s visa amnesty programme. The amnesty, which ran from July 5 to September 30, 2025, allowed foreign nationals with expired immigration documents to regularize their status without penalties. The programme officially ended at midnight on September 30. In a statement issued Tuesday just before the deadline, NIS Public Relations Officer ACI Akinsola Akinlabi confirmed that enforcement operations would commence on October 1. The initiative will target holders of expired Visa on Arrival (VoA), single or multiple-entry short visit and business visas, as well as individuals with expired Comprehensive Expatriate Residence Permits and Automated Cards (CERPAC). Foreign nationals found violating immigration laws face sanctions including deportation, payment of fines, or restrictions on future entry. The NIS outlined the penalties as follows: Less than three months’ overstay: removal, $15 per day fine, or a two-year entry ban. Three months to one year: removal, $15 per day fine, or a five-year entry ban. Over one year: removal and a 10-year or permanent entry ban. The agency stressed that the enforcement is aimed at ensuring lawful migration, protecting national security, and promoting transparency within Nigeria’s immigration system.

Sowore regains freedom

Nigerian politician and human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has regained freedom after his arrest at the Murtala Mohammed International  Airport, Lagos on Sunday.  Sowore, who was arrested on his arrival in Nigeria from United States of America, later regained freedom.  In a post on his official X handle, the Politician stated that he been released by the officials of the Nigerian Immigration.  He wrote;”I have just been released by the Nigerian Immigration after a brief detention and my passport released back to me.” On Thursday, 12 September 2024, a DSS memo ordering the arrest of Sowore upon his arrival in Nigeria was leaked.
