Police Officially Retires Former IGP Kayode Egbetokun

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) on Thursday officially retired former Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun, bringing his long and distinguished career in the force to a close. The retirement ceremony, held in Abuja, was attended by senior police officials and family members, including his wife, Elizabeth Egbetokun. Reflecting on his tenure, Egbetokun described serving as IGP as one of the highest privileges of his life. He highlighted key accomplishments, including expanding the police’s operational capabilities, strengthening investigative units, and modernising the cybercrime division. Appointed IGP in 2023 by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Egbetokun succeeded Usman Baba, who served under the late former President Muhammadu Buhari. From the start of his appointment, he committed to tackling criminal activities across Nigeria. Born in September 1964 in Egbado South Local Government Area of Ogun State, Egbetokun joined the police on March 3, 1990, as a cadet Assistant Superintendent. His final years in office attracted attention because he remained in the role beyond the statutory retirement age of 60 and 35 years of service, as stipulated under Section 18(8) of the Police Act 2020. The NPF explained that he was completing the four-year term specified in his appointment letter.

President Bola Tinubu Officially Swears In Olatunji Disu As IGP

President Bola Tinubu has formally sworn in Olatunji Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police (IGP) in a ceremony held at the Council Chambers of the State House, Abuja, on Wednesday. Disu took the oath of office after his citation was read by the State House Director of Information and Public Relations, Mr Abiodun Oladunjoye. The event was attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, cabinet members, and other notable dignitaries. During the ceremony, President Tinubu also swore in newly appointed commissioners of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission as well as the Federal Civil Service Commission. The proceedings preceded the commencement of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting. Olatunji Disu was first appointed acting IGP on February 24, following the resignation of former Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun. He was formally decorated with the rank of IGP by President Tinubu the day after his appointment.

Human rights lawyer Maxwell Opara, based in Abuja, has withdrawn his legal challenge against the tenure extension of former Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun after the police chief resigned. Opara informed Justice Umar Mohammed of the Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday that the matter had become academic with Egbetokun’s departure from office. The suit, originally filed on September 10, 2024, named Egbetokun, the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigeria Police Council, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and the Federal Civil Service Commission as respondents. In the originating summons, Opara had requested that the court declare that Egbetokun had either reached the compulsory retirement age of 60 under the Public Service Rules or completed 35 years of pensionable service. He also sought a ruling that an appointment terminated by law cannot be revived through later amendments, and that only serving police officers are eligible to hold the position of Inspector-General of Police. He had further asked the court to prevent Egbetokun from continuing to act as Inspector-General. When the case was called, Opara told the court he was withdrawing the suit, noting that the resignation rendered the issues raised in the suit moot.

Over the years, Disu has also attended numerous professional courses both locally and internationally, including training in small arms smuggling, internet fraud, strategic leadership, and forensic investigations. Throughout his career, Disu has held several key operational and leadership roles. He was Commander of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) in Lagos, leading major crime-fighting operations, and later served as Head of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT), stepping in after the suspension of Abba Kyari. He has also served as Commissioner of Police in Rivers State and in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, where he oversaw law enforcement and public safety. Most recently, as Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex in Alagbon, Lagos, Disu strengthened investigative processes and promoted professionalism across the department. With his extensive experience in both operational leadership and strategic management, IGP Disu is expected to steer the Nigeria Police Force toward enhanced public safety, improved investigative capacity, and more effective crime prevention nationwide.

The International Press Institute (IPI) Nigeria has placed Niger State Governor Umaru Bago, Akwa Ibom Governor Umo Eno, and Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun on its ‘Book of Infamy’. The Book of Infamy, also called the Book of Accountability, is a public record highlighting officials and institutions accused of restricting press freedom in Nigeria. Launched in 2022, it documents incidents of media harassment, censorship, and other violations against journalists. IPI Nigeria President Musikilu Mojeed announced the new entries on Tuesday during the Institute’s Annual General Meeting in Abuja, themed “Addressing Media Repression and Safeguarding Democratic Accountability in Nigeria.” Mojeed explained that Governors Bago and Eno were included for targeting journalists. Bago ordered the closure of Badeggi 90.1 FM on August 1, 2025, while Eno expelled Channels Television reporters Christopher Mufat and Kufe Ipe from the Akwa Ibom Government House on May 24, 2025. Efforts by the Institute and the Minister of Information to reverse these actions were ignored. “The matter remains unresolved. For this reason, Governor Bago is hereby listed,” Mojeed said. He added, “For refusing to reverse his administration’s repressive action and perpetuating a climate hostile to journalists, Governor Umo Eno is hereby listed in the Book of Accountability.” IGP Egbetokun was included for failing to address systemic media repression by police officers nationwide, including harassment and arrests of journalists, despite multiple engagements with Force Headquarters. “For failing to uphold his constitutional duties and allowing systematic media oppression, Inspector General Kayode Egbetokun is hereby listed,” Mojeed stated.
