Excessive Speed, Wrongful Overtaking Blamed For Anthony Joshua Lagos–Ibadan Crash

The Federal Road Safety Corps has confirmed that excessive speed and wrongful overtaking caused the crash involving British-Nigerian boxing champion Anthony Joshua on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway on Monday. The accident occurred around 12pm near the Sinoma area close to Sagamu in Ogun State and involved a black Lexus SUV conveying Joshua and a stationary red Sinotruck parked by the roadside. According to preliminary findings by the FRSC Ogun Sector Command, five adult males were involved in the crash. Two occupants died at the scene, one sustained injuries, while two others escaped unhurt. Joshua was rescued alive with minor injuries. “The injured victim was evacuated for medical attention, while the remains of the deceased were conveyed to Livewell Morgue, Ajaka, Sagamu,” the Corps said. It added that the Nigeria Police Motor Traffic Division was notified for further investigation and documentation. FRSC explained that the Lexus SUV was suspected to have been travelling beyond the legally prescribed speed limit when it lost control during an overtaking manoeuvre and crashed into the stationary truck. The Corps stressed that excessive speed and wrongful overtaking remain among the leading causes of fatal crashes on Nigerian highways. The Corps conveyed condolences from the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, to the families of the deceased and wished Joshua a speedy recovery. Motorists were also urged to drive responsibly, with the FRSC warning against speeding and dangerous overtaking, especially during the festive period, while reaffirming its commitment to safer roads through enforcement, rescue operations and public education.

FRSC Blames Speeding, Wrongful Overtaking for Anthony Joshua Crash

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed that excessive speed and wrongful overtaking caused the road crash involving British-Nigerian boxing champion Anthony Joshua along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway on Monday, December 29. The Corps Public Education Officer, Assistant Corps Marshal Olusegun Ogungbemide, disclosed this following preliminary investigations by the FRSC Ogun Sector Command. The accident occurred around 12 noon near the Sinoma area in Sagamu, Ogun State. It involved a black Lexus SUV carrying Joshua and a stationary red Sinotruck parked by the roadside. FRSC findings revealed that five adult males were involved. Two occupants were confirmed dead at the scene — identified as Sina “Evolve” Ghami, a pioneering sports rehabilitation specialist and longtime friend of Joshua, and Mohammed Bello, a 32-year-old Lagos-based entrepreneur and close associate of Ghami. One person sustained injuries, while two others escaped unhurt. Joshua was rescued alive with minor injuries. “The injured victim was evacuated for medical attention, while the remains of the deceased were conveyed to Livewell Morgue, Ajaka, Sagamu,” the statement said. The Nigeria Police Motor Traffic Division was notified for further investigation and documentation. Preliminary findings indicate the Lexus SUV was suspected to have been travelling above the speed limit when it lost control during an overtaking manoeuvre and collided with the stationary truck. “The primary causes of the crash — excessive speed and wrongful overtaking — constitute serious traffic violations and remain among the leading causes of fatal road crashes on Nigerian highways,” the FRSC noted. The corps conveyed the condolences of Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed to the families of the deceased. “On behalf of the entire management and staff of the Federal Road Safety Corps, heartfelt condolences go to the families of the deceased, and we wish the injured victim, Anthony Joshua, a speedy recovery,” the statement concluded.

Ghana Police Apprehend Nigerian Suspect in FRSC Officer and Daughter’s Murder

The Eastern South Regional Police Command in Ghana has apprehended a suspect linked to the killing of Federal Road Safety Corps officer Lasisi Funmilayo Oluwamayokun and her teenage daughter, Sewa Lasisi. The arrest was confirmed on Sunday, November 23, during a press briefing by Regional Commander George Ohene-Boadi. The suspect, identified as Victor Benjamin Fejemirokum, was found hiding at a friend’s residence in Akyem Wenchi, a suburb of Akwatia. Ohene-Boadi explained that intelligence reports indicated the suspect had fled Nigeria to evade arrest. “A Nigerian man suspected of murdering a woman and her daughter in Nigeria fled to Ghana to avoid Nigerian authorities,” he said. The commander noted that the arrest was prompted by a viral video alleging the suspect had abducted and killed the FRSC officer and her daughter in Abeokuta, Ogun State. “Upon learning of his location, our intelligence-led operation swiftly apprehended him,” Ohene-Boadi added. Ghanaian authorities confirmed that arrangements are ongoing to repatriate the suspect to Nigeria. “He is currently in police custody, and steps are being taken to hand him over to Nigerian authorities,” the regional commander said. Lasisi Oluwamayokun, 39, and her daughter were reported missing on November 2 after leaving their home in Obasanjo Hilltop Estate, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta. Lasisi was a Superintendent Route Commander, responsible for supervising multiple routes and coordinating strategic operations for the FRSC. Their mutilated bodies were later recovered at a suspected herbalist’s den in Osun State. While several suspects, including the herbalist, were arrested, the main suspect remained at large until his capture in Ghana. Ogun State Police Commissioner Lanre Ogunlowo stated that the investigation has been handed over to the Osun State Command, with Ogun State police providing necessary support.

FRSC Rolls Out Contactless Biometric System for Instant Driver’s Licence Issuance

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has launched a contactless biometric system for driver’s licence issuance, marking a major leap toward digitalisation in Nigeria’s vehicle administration. The announcement coincides with the Corps’ 2025 Ember Months Road Safety Campaign, themed “Tech Responsibility for Your Safety: Stop Distracted Driving,” aimed at curbing accidents during the festive period between December 15 and January 15. Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed said the new system will eliminate delays and remove the need for temporary licences. “Our upgraded printing facility now produces an average of 15,000 driver’s licences daily, and we plan to increase this to clear the backlog before the second week of November 2025,” he stated. The contactless system allows on-the-spot licence printing immediately after biometric capture. “Once you are captured, you receive your licence instantly. There are no temporary licences, no weeks-long waits,” Mohammed explained. Developed in collaboration with state governments and other stakeholders, the system integrates driving schools, Vehicle Inspection Offices, and certification processes into a streamlined workflow. Using advanced technology, fingerprints are captured without physical contact, ensuring speed and accuracy. The FRSC has also linked the new system with the National Identification Number (NIN) database to enable seamless identity verification. Deputy Corps Marshal Aliyu Datsama confirmed the system is operational and will be rolled out nationwide, including Lagos. Datsama added that the backlog of 800,000 unprocessed licences has been reduced to 400,000, with a daily production capacity of 40,000 licences. He encouraged Nigerians who have completed the capture process to collect their licences, noting that over 206,000 remain unclaimed. The new initiative reflects the FRSC’s commitment to modernising driver’s licence services while improving road safety across the country.
