Perennial African champions Nigeria underscored the truism that class is permanent when they trounced the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon 3-1 in the second of a two-match tour in Yaounde on Tuesday. Three days after they were pipped by the odd goal in the first meeting, the Super Falcons returned to the Military Stadium in northern Yaoundé and flipped the script emphatically, beating the Lionesses 3-1. Head Coach Justin Madugu made seven changes to the side that lost on Saturday. Cameroon struck first again, a seventh-minute goal that briefly stirred memories of the weekend defeat. However, forward Chinwendu Ihezuo drew Nigeria level in the 32nd minute, rising above her marker to power home a header from Rinsola Babajide’s cross. Then, just before half time, the comeback was complete. After a scramble inside the box, Babajide who had assisted the leveller showed sharp instincts to fire Nigeria in front in the 43rd minute. Madugu’s reshaped midfield pressed higher, closed central lanes quicker, and forced Cameroon into hopeful deliveries. In the second half, Captain Rasheedat Ajibade, tireless down the right, delivered a teasing cross into the heart of the box. Michelle Alozie attacked it with conviction, launching herself into a flying header that made it 3-1 in the 64th minute. Both teams used the games as part of their preparations for the 14th edition of the Women Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled for Morocco, 17th March – 3rd April.

Flamingos Win Back-to-Back Friendlies in Abuja

Nigeria’s U17 Women’s National Team, the Flamingos, stepped up preparations for the 2025 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco with two wins on Wednesday, 17th September at the FIFA Goal Project, Abuja. In the first game, the Flamingos edged Eagle’s Wing U13 Boys 1–0 thanks to an early strike from Fatimoh Shuaib, who calmly slotted home after a neat exchange with Tabitha Terlumu. Despite pressure from the opponents, goalkeeper Elizabeth Boniface and her defence held firm to secure the narrow win. Later in the day, the Flamingos returned to action against Harmony FA U13 Boys, sealing a comfortable 3–0 victory. Zainab Raji opened the scoring after pouncing on a defensive error, before Olamide Olanrewaju tapped in for the second. Substitute Favour Etim made an instant impact, adding the third to complete a dominant performance, even as Terlumu saw her penalty kick saved. With these results, the Flamingos have now shown both resilience and attacking sharpness as all called-up players remain in camp ahead of the World Cup (Oct 17–Nov 8), where they face Canada, France, and Samoa in Group D.

Head Coach Aliyu Zubairu has called to camp 30 players as Nigeria’s U20 boys, Flying Eagles, prepare for a two-match tour of Egypt later this month. Team Administrator, Aliyu Lawal Ibrahim informed thenff.com that the seven-time African champions will clash with their Egyptian counterparts in Cairo, capital of Egypt in friendly matches that have been scheduled for 25th and 27th February. This year’s Africa U20 Cup of Nations will be staged in Cote d’Ivoire, 26th April – 18th May, with the four top-placed finishers qualifying to represent the continent at the FIFA U20 World Cup finals in Chile, 27th September – 19th October. The Flying Eagles, champions of Africa in 1983, 1985, 1987, 1989, 2005, 2011 and 2015, won the WAFU-B U20 Championship held in Lome, Togo in October last year to be eligible for the finals in Cote d’Ivoire. They defeated Ghana’s Black Satellites 3-1 in the final match. The two-time FIFA World Cup runners-up, in 1989 and 2005, came within breathing distance of the semi-finals at the FIFA U20 World Cup finals in Argentina, before losing narrowly to Korea Republic after extra time.
