Jordi Alba Announces Retirement From Professional Football After Illustrious Career

Jordi Alba, Barcelona legend and current Inter Miami left-back, has announced his retirement from professional football at the close of the 2025 season. The 36-year-old described the decision as the right moment to end a remarkable career. “The time has come to close a truly meaningful chapter in my life,” Alba said. “I’ve decided to bring my professional football career to an end at the conclusion of this season. I do so with complete conviction, with peace, and with happiness.” Alba started his career at Barcelona’s La Masia academy but was released at 16 for being considered too small. He later played for Cornellà and Valencia, where he successfully transitioned from winger to left-back. Returning to Barcelona in 2012, Alba became a cornerstone of the team for more than a decade, winning six La Liga titles, five Copa del Rey trophies, a UEFA Champions League, the FIFA Club World Cup, and a UEFA Super Cup. He formed one of football’s most memorable partnerships with Lionel Messi and made over 450 appearances for the club, eventually serving as its fourth captain. On the international stage, Alba debuted for Spain in 2011, helping the team win UEFA Euro 2012 with a goal in the 4-0 final victory over Italy. He also captained Spain to the 2022–23 UEFA Nations League title and represented his country in multiple World Cups and European Championships. Now playing alongside Messi and Luis Suárez at Inter Miami, Alba will retire at the end of the MLS season, closing one of the most decorated careers in recent football history.

Chelsea Signs Delap From Ipswich Town

Chelsea have completed the signing of striker Liam Delap from Ipswich Town. The 22-year-old arrives at Stamford Bridge on a six-year deal following an impressive Premier League campaign in which he finished as Ipswich’s top scorer with 12 goals and two assists from 37 appearances. “I understand the stature of this club and can see the trajectory it is on with these players and the head coach,” Delap told Chelsea’s official website. “It’s going to be an incredible place for me to develop, and I hope to achieve amazing things here and help the club win more trophies.” Delap will add to the existing forward options available to head coach Enzo Maresca, including Nicolas Jackson, Marc Guiu, Christopher Nkunku and Armando Broja. The transfer means Delap is reunited with Maresca, who worked with him at Manchester City’s Academy. Ahead of Chelsea’s 2-0 defeat at Ipswich in December 2024, Maresca praised the young striker, describing him as a “fantastic player.” “We spent one year [at City] and he scored 24 goals,” Maresca added. “He’s working hard off the ball. On the ball, he understands the game. He can be an important player for England.” Delap will also reconnect with two former team-mates from City’s Academy, Romeo Lavia and Cole Palmer. Delap joined Derby County’s Academy at the age of six and he spent a decade there before moving to Man City in 2019. He signed for Ipswich from City in July 2024, quickly establishing himself as a key player in their first season back in the Premier League. One of Delap’s standout performances came against Chelsea at Portman Road where, he scored a penalty and provided an assist for Omari Hutchinson in what proved to be Ipswich’s only home league win of the campaign. Internationally, Delap has represented England at Under-21 level, scoring on his debut in a 3–0 win over Luxembourg in a 2025 UEFA European U21 Championship qualifier. He also remains eligible to play for the Republic of Ireland at senior level.

Zimbabwe peg back Nigeria in 2026 FIFA World Cup race

Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the 2026 FIFA World Cup finals suffered a setback on Tuesday after the Warriors of Zimbabwe scored a last-minute equalizer in their Matchday 6 encounter at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo. The result meant the Super Eagles are still stuck in fourth place in group C, as leaders South Africa put daylight between themselves and the rest of the pack with a matured 2-0 win over Benin Republic in Abidjan, that took them to 13 points. Benin Republic’s Cheetahs and Rwanda’s Amavubi are both on eight points, one more than the Super Eagles, with four rounds of matches left, to be played over the months of September and October. Usual suspect Victor James Osimhen, playing his 40th match for the Nigeria senior team, scored to put Nigeria in front after 73 minutes, making hay from Olaoluwa Aina’s cross from the left that escaped every Zimbabwean player in the defence. With robust confidence and a positive spirit from their win over Rwanda in Kigali on Friday, Nigeria launched onslaught after onslaught particularly through the left side of the Zimbabwean defence, with Simon Moses always in good flow, but goalkeeper Washington Arubi thwarted their forays and kept his team in the game. Three minutes after Osimhen’s goal, the visitors could have scored as Khama Billiat broke from the left and the Super Eagles were only saved by the crossbar. Substitute Tawanda Chireda would eventually find the leveller on the dot of 90 minutes, as the Warriors swept past the Nigeria rearguard and he cleverly poked past goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali from close range.
