FG Warns ASUU Against Strike, Vows To Enforce No Work No Pay Policy

ASUU Threatens Nationwide Strike If Federal Government Fails To Meet Demands

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has threatened to resume its nationwide strike if the Federal Government fails to meet its demands by the end of a one-month ultimatum. ASUU Kano Zonal Coordinator, Abdulkadir Muhammad, issued the warning on Monday during a press conference in Kano following a zonal meeting. The lecturers had suspended their warning strike in October, giving the government a month to address issues relating to staff welfare and the provision of a conducive teaching and learning environment. Muhammad expressed frustration over what he described as the government’s slow approach to renegotiating key agreements aimed at revitalising Nigeria’s public university system. The meeting included representatives from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria; Bayero University Kano (BUK); Kaduna State University (KASU); Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology (ADUSTECH), Wudil; Federal University Dutse (FUD); Northwest University (NWU), Kano; and Sule Lamido University (SLUK), Kafin Hausa. He said the warning follows the report presented at ASUU’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on November 8 and 9 at Taraba State University. NEC expressed dissatisfaction with the slow pace of ongoing negotiations, describing it as a major obstacle to reaching a meaningful resolution. “The suspension of the strike in October was meant to create an enabling environment and a gesture of goodwill toward Nigerians. However, our hope for a holistic and timely resolution of the issues is increasingly being dashed,” Muhammad said. He also criticised certain government officials for allegedly undermining the negotiation process and misleading the public about the state of talks. According to him, the government has yet to show genuine commitment to improving lecturers’ welfare or addressing conditions that drive brain drain in the university system. “What the government has offered will neither improve the working conditions of academics nor attract scholars from other countries to our universities,” he added, noting that some officials have falsely claimed that ASUU’s demands have been met. Muhammad further urged the Federal Government to place a moratorium on the establishment of new state universities, similar to the policy for federal institutions, saying, “Governors have cultivated the habit of establishing universities in their states without commitment to funding them.”

Federal Government Confirms Mathematics Still Mandatory For All O-Level Students

Federal Government Confirms Mathematics Still Mandatory For All O-Level Students

The Federal Government has clarified that Mathematics remains a compulsory subject for all students sitting for O-Level examinations in Nigeria. The clarification came in a statement on Sunday by Boriowo Folashade, spokesperson for the Federal Ministry of Education, following public confusion over earlier remarks suggesting that students in the arts and humanities might not need a credit in Mathematics for tertiary admissions. Earlier in the week, Boriowo had announced that some tertiary programmes could admit students without a credit in English or Mathematics. The announcement sparked debate, with critics arguing it could lower academic standards and encourage students to take the subjects less seriously. In the latest statement, Boriowo emphasized that all students are still required to register and sit for both Mathematics and English Language in their O-Level exams. “All students must continue to register and sit for English Language and Mathematics in their O-Level examinations,” the statement said. She clarified that the adjustment only affects admission requirements, allowing some institutions to admit candidates into specific programmes where a credit in one of the subjects is not mandatory. The Ministry said the reform is part of the Federal Government’s effort to promote equitable access, inclusivity, and human capital development, while noting that Mathematics and English remain crucial for communication, reasoning, and lifelong learning. Students, parents, and stakeholders were urged to rely on official government channels for accurate updates on education policies. When asked if this represented a reversal of the earlier position, Boriowo said, “No, it’s not a U-turn — it’s a clarification of the admission requirements aimed at expanding access to tertiary education.”

FG Clears ₦20bn Debt, Processes Over 3.5m Passports Under Tinubu Administration

The Federal Government has cleared a ₦20 billion debt and resolved a backlog of over 200,000 passport applications inherited before President Bola Ahmed Tinubu took office, the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced on Tuesday. Speaking at the inauguration of a new Passport Front Office in Abuja, Tunji-Ojo said the achievement was part of the broader reforms under the Renewed Hope Agenda, which has so far resulted in the issuance of over 3.5 million passports in less than two years. “When we came in, there was a backlog of over 200,000 passports and nearly ₦20 billion in debt. Today, that backlog has been cleared, and the debt has been settled,” the minister stated. From August 2023, a total of 3,546,258 passports have been processed: 3,080,141 locally and 466,117 in the diaspora. He credited the improvements to reforms that also saved the government over ₦1 billion annually. A key move, he said, was the automation of breeder document uploads—such as birth and marriage certificates—previously managed by expensive third-party contractors. “This is a major reform. We no longer pay contractors for what Nigerians can upload themselves. That money stays with government now,” Tunji-Ojo noted. To enhance accessibility and global recognition, the number of centres issuing enhanced e-passports has expanded from 26 to 44 locally, and from five to 47 internationally. All passport offices now issue harmonised, ICAO-compliant enhanced passports, eliminating inconsistencies that previously undermined Nigeria’s global travel credibility. He also announced that a central passport personalisation facility—funded at zero cost to the government by Iris Smart Technologies—will launch in August 2025, further modernising Nigeria’s passport infrastructure. Nigeria has also joined the International Civil Aviation Organization Public Key Directory (ICAO PKD), allowing global digital authentication of its passports. Additionally, the minister revealed that from July 31, 2025, all applications for Special Expatriate Permits and Temporary Work Permits must be submitted online only, citing national security and transparency. “Manual processing will no longer be allowed. We must have the data, biometrics, and documentation of every applicant,” he said. The reforms, according to Tunji-Ojo, are rooted in a commitment to digital transformation, transparency, and national security, while eliminating systemic inefficiencies and ensuring citizens get timely, secure, and world-class services.
