Sabinus Reveals Father Initially Rejected His Comedy Career, Called It “Stupid Business”

Comedian Emmanuel Ejekwu, popularly known as Sabinus, has opened up about his father’s initial disapproval of his comedy career. In a candid interview with VJ Adams, he revealed that his father wanted him to become a lawyer and refused to support his pursuit of comedy. Sabinus explained that after failing to gain admission into Law, he settled for a degree in Linguistics and Communication Studies at the University of Port Harcourt. It was during his time at Uniport that he discovered his talent for skit-making and began creating content, though it initially brought in little to no money. He said his father only learned about his comedy career a year after graduation when he saw Sabinus featured on show posters, confirmed by his sisters. His father reportedly reacted angrily, calling it a “stupid business” and expressing regret over funding his education. Sabinus recalled, “At first, my dad never wanted me to be what I am today; he wanted me to be a lawyer. I tried my best but couldn’t secure a law admission. So, I had to settle for Linguistics and Communication Studies at Uniport. It was on campus that I saw skit making and decided to try it out. Money wasn’t coming. “After I graduated, my dad never knew I was a comedian because I was hiding it. It was one more year after school that he started seeing me on comedy show posters. My sisters confirmed to him that I was into comedy. He was very furious. He fumed, ‘Which comedy? Stupid business. Look at the boy I sent to become a lawyer.’” The comedian added that his father eventually gave his blessing after he started sharing his earnings from comedy with him.

Father Dies of Heart Attack After Three Children Abducted from St Mary’s Catholic School, Niger State

The Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the Northern Region and the FCT, Rev. John Hayab, has disclosed that a parent died of a heart attack following the abduction of his three children at St Mary’s Catholic School in Niger State. Speaking to ARISE News on Tuesday, Hayab highlighted the immense trauma experienced by families affected by recent kidnappings in Kebbi, Kwara, and Niger states. He identified the grieving father only as Mr. Anthony, who was reportedly overwhelmed by the shock of losing his children. “People want to see concrete action. Imagine a mother or a father whose daughter… one of the parents (Mr. Anthony) of these girls picked in the school, died yesterday of a heart attack because three of his children are victims,” Hayab said. He added, “People don’t understand that when you tell it as it is, you’re not speaking against anybody; you are only trying to state the problem. The pains and the trauma are still very fresh. We tried speaking to the parents today, and they were scared of speaking to us.” The revelation underscores the emotional toll that the recent spate of school kidnappings is taking on affected families.

Father Of Late Somtochukwu Maduagwu Insists She Was Murdered, Calls For Fresh Investigation

Engineer Ifeanyi Maduagwu, father of the late Arise News journalist Somtochukwu Maduagwu, has rejected reports surrounding his daughter’s death and is demanding a full, transparent investigation, insisting that she was murdered. Somtochukwu lost her life on September 29 after an alleged attack at her residence in Katampe, Abuja. Early reports claimed she fell from a three-storey building while trying to escape from her assailants, but her father says the story is false and inconsistent with her character. In an interview with BBC Igbo, Mr. Maduagwu maintained that his daughter was deliberately killed. “My daughter, Sommie Tochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, did not and would never jump from a building. I believe my daughter was killed,” he said. He described her as brilliant, cheerful, and afraid of heights. “If you keep Sommie on a table and tell her to jump down, she won’t do it — not to talk of a three-storey building. That’s a lie. I want the police to conduct a thorough investigation because the truth has not yet come out,” he added. He further expressed pain over the slow response when the incident occurred. “I heard that help was called for, but no one came on time. Even at the hospital, she was delayed because they requested identification papers. That broke my heart,” he lamented. Mr. Maduagwu recalled that just days before her death, his daughter spoke about her plans to settle down and her dream of making a difference in Nigeria through public service. Somtochukwu was buried on Saturday in her hometown, Agulu, Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State, after a funeral Mass at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church. Family, friends, colleagues, and notable figures — including former Anambra State governor Peter Obi — attended the solemn ceremony. During the service, Rev. Fr. Peter Ezewuzie urged the grieving family to take comfort in faith, reminding them that “the Lord who created us knows the beginning and the end.”
