DSS Confirms Death Of Calista Ifedi In Custody At Wawa Barracks

The Department of State Services (DSS) has confirmed that Mrs. Calista Ifedi, who was detained by the agency in November 2021, died while in custody at Wawa Barracks in Niger State. The confirmation came after more than two years of silence from the DSS, during which her family and human rights organisations repeatedly demanded information about her whereabouts. Former presidential candidate and human rights activist Omoyele Sowore disclosed the development on Monday evening, describing it as a disturbing example of impunity within the security agency during the leadership of Yusuf Bichi under the Muhammadu Buhari administration. “Mrs. Calista Ifedi died at Wawa Barracks two years ago under unlawful detention by the lawless Department of State Services (DSS). I share this painful account to bear witness to a grave injustice and to expose the burden of impunity inflicted on Nigerians by the DSS.” Mrs. Ifedi, a small-scale restaurant owner in Enugu, was arrested alongside her husband, Sunday Ifedi, at their home on November 23, 2021. According to Sunday Ifedi, their arrest was arbitrary and no formal charges were ever filed against them. He remained in detention until his release in December 2025. Rights advocates, including Amnesty International Nigeria and lawyer Deji Adeyanju, have consistently maintained that her only alleged offence was that members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) patronised her food business. Following her arrest, she was taken into DSS custody and disappeared from public view for months. Sowore alleged that her health deteriorated while she was held at Wawa Barracks and that she was denied medical attention. “While in detention at Wawa Barracks, Mrs. Ifedi fell ill. Instead of receiving medical care, her repeated complaints were ignored. She was allegedly taunted and left to deteriorate until she died.” Sunday Ifedi said the last time he saw his wife was in March 2022, when they were transferred from the DSS headquarters to Wawa Barracks and separated. He was never officially informed of her death and only learned about it after Sowore personally contacted him. “Her husband was never informed of her death. Tonight, I personally called him to convey this devastating news before making it public.” Calling for accountability, Sowore said, “These are egregious crimes. Nigeria must immediately shut down the Wawa Barracks detention facility. Every official involved in the unlawful detention, neglect, and death of Mrs. Calista Ifedi must be identified, arrested, and prosecuted.” He further accused the DSS of operating with impunity, alleging that its leadership at the time acted with legal backing from former Attorney General Abubakar Malami, SAN. “This tragedy occurred during the period when Yusuf Bichi presided over the DSS with unchecked brutality, aided and protected by Abubakar Malami, SAN, under the criminal Muhammadu Buhari regime. History must not forget, and justice must not be denied.” Sowore also demanded transparency, insisting that Mrs. Ifedi’s remains be produced and independently examined. “Mrs. Calista Ifedi deserved life, dignity, and justice. Nigeria must produce her dead body, and an autopsy must be carried out to determine the circumstances of her death.”

Tinubu Nominates Enugu Attorney-General Kingsley Udeh As Minister

President Bola Tinubu has forwarded the name of Enugu State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Kingsley Tochukwu-Udeh, to the Senate for confirmation as a minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The nomination was announced on the Senate floor on Tuesday by Senate President Godswill Akpabio. In a letter, Tinubu cited Section 147(2) of the 1999 Constitution, which empowers the President to appoint ministers subject to Senate approval. “I am pleased to forward to the Senate the nomination of Dr. Kingsley Tochukwu-Udeh, SAN, for confirmation as Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. I trust the Senate will give this request prompt consideration,” the President’s letter read in part. The appointment follows the resignation of former Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Uche Nnaji, who stepped down last month amid controversies surrounding his academic credentials and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) discharge certificate. Nnaji’s exit had left Enugu State without representation in the Federal Executive Council, a constitutional requirement that mandates at least one minister from each state. Dr. Udeh, a respected legal practitioner recently conferred with the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), is expected to fill the vacancy and restore Enugu’s representation in the federal cabinet. After reading the President’s letter, Senate President Akpabio referred the nomination to the Committee of the Whole for immediate screening and confirmation.

Enugu State House Caucus Fully Joins APC

Enugu State House Caucus Fully Joins APC

The entire Enugu State caucus in the House of Representatives has officially joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), consolidating the party’s control of the state’s federal seats. House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas announced the defections on Thursday during plenary, reading letters of resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP). Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah was present to witness the proceedings. The lawmakers explained that their decision was driven by unresolved internal conflicts within their former parties, which they said undermined opposition stability. After the 2023 elections, the Labour Party held seven of Enugu’s eight House seats, while the PDP controlled one. With the recent move, the APC now holds all federal legislative seats from the state. Speaking to reporters, Nnolim Nnaji, representing Nkanu East/Nkanu West and spokesperson for the defectors, said the shift was aimed at supporting Governor Mbah’s development-oriented agenda. “Visit Enugu and see the work being done. The governor is delivering for our people. Our defection is a deliberate step to align with progress and bring our constituencies closer to national development. This is about courage, clarity, and our shared vision to elevate Nkanu East and West,” Nnaji said. He added that joining the APC would help attract more projects, create jobs, improve infrastructure, and expand empowerment programs for youths, women, and communities. The lawmakers who switched allegiance on Thursday include Martins Oke, Anayo Onwuegbu, Nnamdi Agbo, Nnolim Nnaji, and Mark Obetta. Separately, Daniel Asama of Bassa/Jos North Federal Constituency also left the Labour Party to join the APC.

By Kamal Yalwa : July 26, 2025 The Federal Government has inaugurated three advanced oncology centres in Katsina, Enugu, and Benin, marking a significant milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to expand access to cancer treatment and address the growing burden of non-communicable diseases. The centres, located at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Katsina; the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Enugu; and the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Benin City, were commissioned as part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s National Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative. Speaking at the inauguration ceremonies, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Ali Pate, said the Tinubu administration is committed to transforming cancer care in Nigeria through “unprecedented investments” in modern treatment facilities and diagnostic capabilities. “These new centres demonstrate the President’s resolve to improve healthcare outcomes and reduce the burden of cancer and other non-communicable diseases across the country,” Prof. Pate stated. He emphasized that the new facilities would enhance early diagnosis, provide state-of-the-art treatment options, and serve as hubs for training medical professionals in oncology care. Also in attendance were the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, and the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, who joined Prof. Pate in celebrating the achievement. The new centres form part of a broader strategy to decentralize specialized healthcare services and bring quality cancer treatment closer to communities nationwide.
