Alex Iwobi Says He Sometimes Had To Book His Own Flights With Nigeria U-23 Compared To England Youth System

Nigeria midfielder Alex Iwobi has reflected on his early days with the national team, revealing that his first experience with Nigeria’s U-23 squad came with several organizational hurdles. In an interview with High Performance, Iwobi contrasted the setup in Nigeria with his time in England’s youth teams, noting a stark difference in structure and discipline. “With England, it’s a bit more strict. You’re in St George’s Park National Football Centre or you’re in a hotel, no one’s allowed to come in, strict food, strict regime — that’s it,” he said, emphasizing the highly organized environment he was used to. Iwobi explained that Nigeria’s U-23 experience was less structured, with logistical issues occasionally affecting players. “Sometimes your flight’s not booked properly; you have to book your own flight. You get there and sometimes the people at the airport are not ready to pick you up, so you have to make your own way,” he added. He described these challenges as part of the learning curve early in his international career, highlighting the contrast between the two systems.

Kyle Walker Retires From International Football After England World Cup Snub

Kyle Walker has confirmed he is stepping away from international football after being left out of Thomas Tuchel’s England squad ahead of this summer’s World Cup. The 35-year-old defender made 96 appearances for England since his debut in November 2011. During that time he represented the national team under four different managers — Fabio Capello, Roy Hodgson, Gareth Southgate and Tuchel — and currently sits 10th on the country’s all-time men’s senior appearance list. Walker’s last outing for England came in March 2025 during a 2-0 World Cup qualifying win over Albania. He lost his starting spot to Reece James in the next game against Latvia and has not returned to the squad since. “Playing for England has always been the greatest honour of my career. Every time I pulled on the shirt it meant a huge amount to me and my family. “After a lot of thought, this feels like the right moment to step away and allow the next generation of players to come through. “I leave incredibly proud of the journey and grateful to every manager, teammate and supporter who has been part of it. “Representing your country is the biggest thing you can do in football and those memories with England will stay with me forever.” England manager Thomas Tuchel also paid tribute to the veteran full-back. “I know all England fans will join me in congratulating Kyle on an incredible international career. “Although I only worked with him for a short period of time, I was always aware that he was one of England’s greats who fully embraced the highest honour of representing his country. “An international career spanning 14 years and five major tournaments is testament to Kyle’s dedication. He can look back on his time with the Three Lions with great pride.” Walker’s wife, Annie Kilner, also reflected on his journey with the national team. The couple recently revealed they are expecting their fourth child. “Kyle has always taken so much pride in playing for England and it has meant the world to him. “As a family we have shared so many special moments watching him represent his country, and our four boys have grown up seeing how much the England shirt means to their dad. “International football asks a lot of players and their families, but we could not be prouder of everything he has achieved and the career he has had with England.” Walker enjoyed some of his finest moments with England during the period the team reached the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup and the final of Euro 2020, which came during a trophy-filled seven-and-a-half-year spell at Manchester City under Pep Guardiola.

Carney Chukwuemeka Switches International Allegiance To Austria Ahead Of World Cup

Carney Chukwuemeka of Borussia Dortmund has officially changed his international allegiance from England to Austria ahead of this summer’s FIFA World Cup. The 22-year-old midfielder was born in Austria but moved to England as a child. He went on to represent England at several youth levels but never received a senior call-up. FIFA confirmed the change in Chukwuemeka’s international status late on Monday, clearing the way for him to feature for Austria. He could make his debut in the upcoming March international friendlies against Ghana and South Korea. Austria, coached by Ralf Rangnick, will face defending champions Argentina, Algeria and Jordan in the group stage of the World Cup. The European side qualified for the tournament for the first time since 1998. Chukwuemeka began his professional journey at Aston Villa, rising through the club’s academy before earning a move to Chelsea in 2022. He joined Borussia Dortmund on loan in early 2025, and the Bundesliga club later made the transfer permanent during the summer. This season, the midfielder has scored two goals in 20 Bundesliga appearances for Dortmund. Meanwhile, Paul Wanner, a 20-year-old midfielder currently playing for PSV Eindhoven and formerly of Bayern Munich, also switched his international allegiance from Germany to Austria on Monday.

Prince Andrew Arrested Over Alleged Misconduct In Public Office

Prince Andrew has been arrested and is currently in custody over allegations of misconduct in public office. Police officers are conducting searches at properties in Berkshire and Norfolk, including the Royal Lodge in Windsor Great Park, where he had been residing until recently. Vehicles believed to be police cars were also seen entering the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk earlier today. King Charles III reacted to the development, saying he “learned with the deepest concern” of Andrew’s arrest and stressing that “the law must take its course”. The arrest follows a statement from Thames Valley Police confirming they were reviewing a complaint concerning the alleged disclosure of confidential material by the former royal to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Andrew, who marks his 66th birthday today, has consistently denied any wrongdoing connected to Epstein.

Tuchel becomes England’s third foreign coach

Former Paris Saint-German head coach Thomas Tuchel was on Wednesday confirmed as the new boss of the England men’s national football team. The 51-year-old German, who claimed six trophies in his two years in the French capital, will take over from interim manager Lee Carsley in January after the draw for the qualifying campaign for the 2026 World Cup. “I am very proud to have been given the honour of leading the England team,” said Tuchel. “I have long felt a personal connection to the game in this country, and it has given me some incredible moments already. “To have the chance to represent England is a huge privilege, and the opportunity to work with this special and talented group of players is very exciting.” During nearly two years at the English Premier League outfit Chelsea, he led the side to 2021 Champions League, the Uefa Super Cup and the Club World Cup. But he left the west Londoners after the club was sold to Todd Boehly in 2022. In his 15 months at Bayern Munich, he steered the German giants to the 2023 Bundesliga crown – an 11th consecutive Bundesliga title for the Bavarians – before an acrimonious departure involving public spats with an array of  senior players and executives. “We are thrilled to have hired one of the best coaches in the world,” English Football Association CEO Mark Bullingham said in a statement on Wednesday. Tuchel will be joined by his former Chelsea assistant Anthony Barry, who most recently worked with Portugal at the 2023 European championships. “Fundamentally we wanted to hire a coaching team to give us the best possible chance of winning a major tournament, and we believe they will do just that,” Bullingham added. “Thomas and the team have a single-minded focus on giving us the best possible chance to win the World Cup in 2026.” Tuchel will become England’s third foreign coach after Sven-Goran Eriksson from Sweden and the Italian Fabio Capello.

Tuchel agrees to become England’s manager

Thomas Tuchel has agreed to become England’s manager after talks with the Football Association accelerated on Tuesday.  The 51-year-old will be the third foreign manager of the men’s team and the first from Germany. The FA has had Tuchel on its shortlist to find Gareth Southgate’s permanent successor since the beginning of the process, a list that also included Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola and the interim manager, Lee Carsley, among others. It zeroed in on Tuchel, who led Chelsea to Champions League glory in 2021 – the highlight on an impressive CV. He has been out of work since leaving Bayern Munich in May. Tuchel follows Sven-Göran Eriksson and Fabio Capello in taking the job as an overseas head coach. The FA’s chief executive, Mark Bullingham, who led the recruitment process alongside the technical director, John McDermott, has long been clear that nationality should be no barrier to the role. Bullingham made the point during the European Championship in June that the England women head coach, Sarina Wiegman, is Dutch. In others words, the FA was and is perfectly happy to put its trust in someone from outside England. There is no doubt that Tuchel is an anglophile. He speaks excellent English – a prerequisite for the FA in terms of an overseas candidate – and he embraced his 18 months or so at Chelsea, becoming a cult hero to their fans. Tuchel’s skills as an orator and a leader came to the fore when he spoke out against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, despite Chelsea being owned at the time by a Russian, Roman Abramovich. Tuchel found that he loved the more personality-driven aspect of the British media. Tuchel is uncompromising and left his previous four jobs under something of a cloud, reports of fallings-out with players and directors following his exits from – in chronological order – Borussia Dortmund, Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and Bayern. On the other hand, when Tuchel hits his stride, he has the ability to energise and inspire, to build momentum. Hugely charismatic, he has a proven track record at the highest level, winning everything on the domestic front at PSG before narrowly failing to deliver them a maiden Champions League trophy, losing in the 2020 final to Bayern. He would make up for that on a personal level at Chelsea. At Dortmund, he had won the DFB-Pokal. At Bayern, he would win the Bundesliga. Tuchel would be expected to bring the English coach Anthony Barry with him, having worked with him at Chelsea and Bayern. Barry is an assistant to the Portugal manager, Roberto Martínez.
