Kano Lawmakers Move To Impeach Deputy Governor Gwarzo Over Alleged Misconduct And Fund Diversion

The Kano State House of Assembly has commenced moves to impeach the state’s Deputy Governor, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, following allegations of gross misconduct, abuse of office, and breach of public trust. The process began during a plenary session after the Majority Leader of the Assembly, Lawan Hussaini Dala, presented a formal notice to lawmakers. Dala explained that the action is being carried out in line with Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), which provides the legal framework for removing a deputy governor from office. He told the Assembly that the accusations against Gwarzo are connected to his time as Commissioner for Local Government Affairs between 2023 and 2024, in addition to his current position as deputy governor. According to Dala, Gwarzo allegedly misused his office while overseeing the ministry responsible for local government administration in the state. He claimed that funds meant for the management of Kano’s 44 local government councils were diverted during that period. The majority leader alleged that from June 2023 to January 2024, Gwarzo received ₦1.5 million every month from each of the 44 councils. He said the payments amounted to ₦66 million monthly, bringing the total to about ₦462 million within seven months. Dala further told lawmakers that more payments were allegedly made between February and July 2024 under the pretext of financing special assignments. During that time, each local government council reportedly paid ₦3.255 million every month, leading to a total of about ₦726 million over six months. He said the alleged financial dealings violate the confidence placed in public officials and undermine the principles of transparency and accountability in governance. The impeachment notice also accuses the deputy governor of abuse of office.
