Defection: Labour Party Lampoons Peter Obi, Begs Nigerians for Forgiveness

The leadership of the Labour Party (LP) has lampooned the Party’s Presidential Candidate in the 2023 General Election, Mr. Peter Obi for defecting to the African Democratic Congress. This is contained In a statement made available by the Party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, on Wednesday. Labour Party, in the statement took note of the defection of its 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi and a few of his supporters to the African Democratic Congress, ADC, saying they also took note of the lacklustre speech Mr. Obi made at the occasion, and wondered what new he intends to sell to Nigerians. The statement read; “For us in Labour Party, we wondered why it took them this long to make the move because we have since September 2024, parted ways with Peter Obi and some of his blind supporters in the National Assembly. We have patiently waited for this day. The party is finally liberated by this defection and as Party leaders, we count it as a blessing. “It will be on record that the leadership of the Labour Party had since urged Obi and his disgruntled followers to exit the party if they were unable to work with the leadership of the party. As a matter of fact, the party had suspended many of the lawmakers for anti party and was clearly going to mete the same treatment on the Presidential Candidate but for the intervention of some well meaning Nigerians. “The crisis we had in Labour Party was caused by Peter Obi and the Abia state governor, Dr. Alex Otti. It was them that sponsored the insurrection against the Julius Abure leadership. We had also expected Governor Otti to follow Obi out of the party. We are surprised that even though he has been suspended from the party, he is still loitering around. It is still not too late for him to follow his political leader.” The party also warned that the charade which took place in Enugu was largely boycotted by prominent political and traditional institutions in the South East. “All we saw were mere political spent forces who cannot win in their wards should there be an election. “This is clearly a danger signal that the Obi presidency (or Vice Presidency) is already a failed project from inception. He has clearly lost the charm that had endeared him to the people prior 2023. “He must be told that the South East lost out completely in the President Ahmed Tinubu’s government because they trusted and believed in him in 2023. While some states of the federation boast as much as five ministers, the entire states in the South East was given a paltry five ministerial slot. The marginalization against the zone has continued even in infrastructure allocation and I wonder if the Southeast will repeat the same political harakiri again. “Finally, we urge Nigerians to watch out for the Labour Party. We gave Nigerians a candidate we thought was good for the nation in 2023, but time has since proved that we made the greatest political mistake. We plead for forgiveness from Nigerians. We are already working out the best prospect that we hope will bring Nigeria back to its glorious days.”

PDP Reacts To Senator Jarigbe’s Defection To APC

The Cross River State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has finally responded to the defection of Senator Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe to the All Progressives Congress (APC), declaring that his exit will not weaken the party but instead strengthen its unity and resolve. In a statement released on Thursday, the PDP described Jarigbe’s defection as a personal decision that holds no consequence for the stability or structure of the party in the state. It reaffirmed its commitment to rebuilding a stronger, more united organisation at all levels. According to the statement, the senatorial mandate currently held by Jarigbe was the product of the collective efforts and sacrifices of PDP members and supporters in Cross River North. The party expressed disappointment that the senator chose to abandon the platform that enabled his political rise. “His decision is regrettable, but it will only serve to strengthen our internal cohesion and renew our dedication to the principles that have sustained the PDP as the most organised and people-oriented political movement in Cross River,” the statement read in part. Under the leadership of the Caretaker Committee chaired by Rt. Hon. Bassey Ewa, the PDP reiterated its focus on restoring unity, deepening grassroots mobilisation, and strengthening structures ahead of future elections. The party also emphasised that it remains steadfast in its mission to serve the people of Cross River through credible leadership and inclusive governance. Dr Maurice Ekong, the PDP’s Director of Media and Communications, urged members and supporters to remain calm and confident, assuring them that the party is “moving forward — stronger, more focused, and more determined than ever.”

Opposition Defections to ADC Strengthen APC Ahead of 2027 — Analyst Claims

A political analyst has described the mass movement of members from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and a few disaffected All Progressives Congress (APC) elements into the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a development that ultimately strengthens the ruling APC ahead of the 2027 general elections. Reacting to the widely publicised “coalition” formed earlier today, the commentator argued that, by law, individuals cannot belong to more than one political party, making today’s declaration of support for ADC a formal abandonment of their original parties — particularly the PDP. “Their open declaration for ADC today is a clear abandonment of their previous parties,” the statement read. “In fact, belonging to two political parties is a ground for disqualification in an election.” The defection, according to the analyst, marks the beginning of the end for the PDP, which he says has now been fractured beyond repair, with older party stalwarts sidelined by emerging forces within. He described the new ADC-led coalition as a desperate attempt by Atiku Abubakar’s faction to secure a new platform for the 2027 presidential race. “The so-called coalition is just Atiku’s faction of the PDP looking for another vehicle to the 2027 election. It is a gathering of ‘former this’ and ‘former that’ of the PDP,” he stated. The defection of a few APC members was dismissed as inconsequential, with the commentator arguing that many of them had worked against President Tinubu in the 2023 elections or had lost political relevance. “Their movement takes NOTHING away from the APC. In fact, it’s like removing a disease from within — the APC is better off without them,” he said. He further suggested that Labour Party’s Peter Obi is being lured into the coalition by Atiku’s camp only for his electoral value, with no intention of giving him the presidential ticket. “They want Peter Obi’s votes, but not to hand him the ticket. That’s why David Mark is interim chairman. Politics watchers know what that means,” he added. “And how do you make someone who won two regions in 2023 (South-East and South-South) a running mate to someone who won only one (North-East)?” In conclusion, the statement claimed that APC has emerged stronger since the 2023 elections, with significant defections into its fold from elected officials, while the opposition is “fragmented and weakened.” “For now,” he concluded, “let us focus on governance and allow them to exercise their constitutional right to associate and assemble.” The remarks highlight the deepening rifts within Nigeria’s opposition bloc as the 2027 electoral race begins to take shape.

Delta Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori Decamps to APC

Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori has reportedly dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). He was said to have defected alongside his commissioners. This was revealed after a high-level, closed-door meeting at the Government House in Asaba on Wednesday evening. The Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Festus Ahon, said the decision came after “wide consultations with political stakeholders and in the interest of Delta’s long-term development.” Oborevwori was elected in 2023 under the PDP platform. Senator James Manager, who addressed the press after a meeting of the PDP stakeholders in Government House, said a formal declaration would be made on Monday. He said that the governor’s defection to the ruling party was in the interest and the overall development of Delta state. Mr Manager said the entire PDP structure in the state had collapsed to the APC. Present at the briefing were Governor Oborevwori, the immediate past governor Ifeanyi Okowa, Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Emomotimi Guor and other PDP stalwarts.
