K1 Appeals To Ogun Governor Over Alleged Exclusion From Awujale Nomination Process

Fuji music legend Wasiu Ayinde Adesanya, popularly known as K1, has formally petitioned Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, raising concerns over his exclusion from the process to select nominees for the vacant Awujale of Ijebuland stool. In the petition dated January 8, 2026, and submitted through his lawyer Wahab K. Shittu, SAN, K1 urged the governor to ensure that the nomination exercise adheres strictly to established laws and procedures. He called on the Ogun State Executive Council to intervene, describing attempts to sideline him and other eligible princes as deliberate and unlawful. K1 alleged that leaders of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House were introducing measures that could unfairly bar certain family members from participating in the selection. He argued that steps taken so far by the Ijebu-Ode Local Government and the ruling house violated due process and existing legal frameworks. The musician also challenged directives requiring aspirants to purchase nomination forms and undergo screening, stating that these demands are not provided for under the Chieftaincy Declaration or the Obas and Chiefs Laws of Ogun State. The petition noted that the Secretary of Ijebu-Ode Local Government had, in a letter dated January 6, 2026, instructed the Fusengbuwa Ruling House to convene a statutory family meeting within 14 days to nominate candidates. However, K1 claimed a subsequent notice, issued by Prince Adeleye Lateef Ademuyiwa, the family’s Public Relations Officer, introduced additional procedures including screening and delegate-based nominations. According to the notice, the nomination exercise is scheduled for January 12, 2026, at the Bisrod Event Centre, Ijebu-Ode, with a prior meeting to select delegates on January 10. K1’s lawyer described these developments as illegal, warning that they could disenfranchise legitimate members of the ruling house. The petition emphasized that every qualified member has the right to participate freely in the nomination process and that no faction should dominate it. The petition further stressed that imposing screening panels and delegate systems contradicts the Chieftaincy Declaration and the Obas and Chiefs Laws of Ogun State, 2021, and could lead to avoidable disputes. K1 urged Governor Abiodun to act swiftly to uphold fairness and transparency, adding that any attempt to unlawfully bar him from participating would be strongly contested. It is recalled that K1 had previously withdrawn a case at the Ogun State High Court in Ijebu-Ode, where he had challenged claims that he was not a recognized member of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House. The Fusengbuwa Ruling House is expected to hold the nomination exercise on Monday at the Bisrod Event Centre, Ijebu-Ode, unless there is a last-minute change.

Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, on Thursday presented brand-new 2025 Toyota Corolla Cross SUVs to the chairmen of the state’s 20 local government areas, adding a festive highlight to the Christmas season. The presentation took place in Abeokuta, with the chairmen expressing gratitude for the governor’s gesture. Represented by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Ganiyu Hamzat, Governor Abiodun said the vehicles were provided to improve efficiency and strengthen governance at the grassroots level. He praised the chairmen for their partnership in delivering the dividends of democracy and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting local governments in driving socio-economic development. “Our administration understands the challenges faced at the grassroots and the obstacles in delivering essential services,” the governor said. “These vehicles are meant to facilitate swift and effective outreach, ensuring that rural communities experience good governance without impediments.” Folashade Adeyemo, Ogun State Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria and Chairperson of Odeda Local Government, spoke on behalf of the beneficiaries, describing the gift as a timely boost to the Yuletide celebrations. She commended Governor Abiodun for his achievements in education, housing, healthcare, and road infrastructure, saying his ISEYA mantra has raised the state’s development profile. “This gesture makes Christmas even more memorable,” Adeyemo said. “It will enhance efficiency, allowing local governments to reach remote communities, monitor projects, and engage more effectively with the people.” Dr. Rotimiolu Akinlesi, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, also lauded the governor for the SUVs, emphasizing that the gesture would further strengthen grassroots governance. He urged chairmen to match the state government’s support with dedicated service to their communities. The initiative comes amid ongoing challenges facing local governments in Nigeria, particularly regarding autonomy and financial independence. Despite a Supreme Court ruling last October directing state governments to grant local governments greater autonomy, many remain dependent on state governments, limiting effective grassroots service delivery and development.

Ogun State Suspends Awujale Selection Process Over Procedural Errors

The Ogun State Government has suspended the ongoing selection process for the vacant stool of the Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland. Prof. Fassy Yusuf, Vice Chairman of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House, confirmed the development in a phone interview on Wednesday. The stool became vacant following the death of Oba Sikiru Adetona in July, who ruled for 65 years and passed away at the age of 91. In a letter dated December 2, 2025, and signed by the Secretary of Ijebu Ode Local Government Area, Oke Adebanjo, the Fusengbuwa Ruling House was instructed to nominate candidates for the next Awujale within 14 days. Acting on the directive, the ruling house began the selection process, which reportedly attracted over 60 princes, and scheduled the screening for Monday, December 15. However, the exercise was halted after the state government called a meeting on Tuesday with representatives of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House and the Awujale Interregnum Administration Committee. The meeting, presided over by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr. Ganiyu Hamzat, aimed to ensure full compliance with existing chieftaincy laws. Prof. Yusuf explained that the government directed the ruling house to restart the process due to procedural errors that could have led to legal challenges. He emphasized that the intervention was standard practice to ensure adherence to the 2021 Obas and Chiefs Law and the 1957 chieftaincy declaration governing the Awujale stool. “The meeting with the government was to ensure that everything falls in place,” Yusuf said. “We are to strictly follow the provisions of the Obas and Chiefs Law regarding the installation of the Awujale. Very soon, we will receive a fresh letter from the local government to begin the process anew. The earlier letter giving us 14 days has been withdrawn. “The family will review the situation, and we will proceed according to government guidelines. No list of candidates has been submitted to the kingmakers, so there is nothing to worry about.” A senior state government official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, also confirmed the suspension, stressing that the meeting was intended to correct procedural errors and not to interfere with the ruling house’s autonomy. “The local government acted prematurely in initiating the selection process. It did not follow the procedures outlined in the 2021 Obas and Chiefs Law and the 1957 chieftaincy declaration for the Awujale stool,” the official said. “We have guided all parties on the correct steps to avoid unnecessary litigation. “To properly commence the process, the ruling house must first formally notify the local government of its readiness. The local government will then communicate with the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, which will authorize the selection process. Given that the Awujale’s installation has remained unchanged for 65 years, it is understandable that some officials may be unfamiliar with the procedure.” The government has assured that the restart of the selection process will ensure full compliance with the law and prevent disputes over the installation of the new Awujale.

Court of Appeal Berths in Abeokuta as Abiodun Assures Judicial Officers of Support

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun has revealed that the Federal Government has approved the establishment of the Court of Appeal in Abeokuta, the state capital. Governor Abiodun made the revelation at a special church thanksgiving to mark the 2025/2026 legal year, held at the Cathedral of St. Peter, Ake, Abeokuta. He said the establishment of the Appellate Court would bring justice closer, ensure quick dispensation, and help take the load off the Ibadan Division. He said: “We have finally received the formal approval for the establishment of the Ogun State division of the Federal Court of Appeal in Abeokuta. “This is indeed a landmark achievement of an initiative proudly and aggressively championed by our administration to bring justice closer to our people and to ease the heavy caseload currently on the Ibadan division. “As a government, we recognize that justice is the foundation of every prosperous society, and we appreciate the fact that the Ogun State judiciary has not only maintained its independence but has also taken commendable strides towards improving access to justice, reducing case backlogs, and embracing reforms.” The governor pointed out that justice could not thrive without integrity, impartiality, and courage, admonishing the judicial officers to renew their dedication to a system where the scales of justice remain balanced, the most vulnerable voices heard, and where it provides an opportunity for every man, woman, and child to be protected by the law. While acknowledging that a strong, independent, and upright judiciary provides a pathway to good governance, economic development, and social stability, Governor Abiodun said that as a responsive and responsible administration, it appreciates the place of the judiciary in entrenching the ideals and practices of democracy. “Our administration will continue to provide the necessary support and resources to enhance judicial efficiency and uphold the integrity of the legal system in our dear state. “We will continue to prioritize the welfare and accommodations of judicial officers by making adequate housing arrangements and providing other essential support for our judges and other judicial staff who may be posted to serve in the Ogun State division of the Court of Appeal,” he said. He lauded the State Chief Judge for repositioning the judiciary through impactful reforms and the judicial officers for maintaining the state’s position as the beacon of the legal profession in the country. In a sermon, the Bishop of Ijebuland South/West Diocese, the Rt. Rev’d Babatunde Ogunbanwo, described the judiciary as the most powerful arm of government that gives or takes life, dethrones or enthrones kings, as well as sacks elected officers or brings those who lost elections to power. He urged judges to always act justly by being fair to all manners of people, irrespective of their social or economic status, noting that society would only thrive when justice reigns. The clergyman reminded judicial officers about the place of mercy while dispensing justice, saying it is imperative to be firm with the law but to have a heart of compassion, as justice without mercy could be cruel. While calling on the judiciary to be bold and ready to confront the negativities of the system, Bishop Ogunbanwo urged them to make fairness their watchword and allow their conscience to speak louder, knowing that they will give an account of their stewardship to God, the ultimate Judge. The Chief Judge of the State, Hon. Justice Mosumola Dipeolu, read the only Bible passage taken from Colossians 3:8-17.
