I Have A Rare Friendship With Former President Olusegun Obasanjo – Charly Boy

Maverick entertainer and activist Charly Boy has opened up about his rare friendship with former President Olusegun Obasanjo, describing it as a connection built on respect, understanding, and a shared commitment to Nigeria’s future. Despite his reputation as a rebellious critic of authority, Charly Boy revealed on X that many Nigerians were initially surprised by his closeness to Obasanjo. “People wondered how someone who constantly challenges authority could be so connected to a former head of state,” he said. “But life is not always black and white. Sometimes respect and understanding build bridges where people least expect.” Charly Boy explained that Obasanjo recognized qualities in him often overlooked by others, including courage, consistency, and dedication to truth. In turn, he sees Obasanjo not merely as a former military officer and president, but as an elder who has faced war, leadership pressures, and national challenges while remaining resilient. He emphasized that their relationship is private and meaningful, focused on Nigeria’s pressing issues. While debates and disagreements are part of their conversations, mutual respect always remains. “We may argue, we may disagree, but respect is always intact,” he said. A highlight of their bond came when Obasanjo personally hosted the launch of Charly Boy’s autobiography, 999. The entertainer described the event as more than a book launch, saying it symbolized recognition and honour. “That day was not about selling books,” he recalled. “It was about acknowledgement. It was about an elder saying, ‘I see you.’” Charly Boy concluded that their friendship serves as an example of bridging divides in a polarized nation. “When two strong men choose respect over ego, it becomes a powerful example for others,” he said.
