Eto’o and Marc Brys Clash as Cameroon Names Two AFCON Squads

Cameroon plunged into chaos just days before the Africa Cup of Nations as tensions erupted between national team manager Marc Brys and Cameroonian Football Federation president Samuel Eto’o. Eto’o, who recently celebrated his fourth year as president of the federation, is reportedly in a bitter feud with Brys, who has refused to step down. Despite Eto’o declaring that Brys’s tenure is over, the Belgian coach remains under contract with the Ministry of Sport until September 2026 and has yet to be officially dismissed. The dispute has thrown the national team into confusion, with two separate AFCON squads now named. On December 1, the Cameroonian FA, under Eto’o’s leadership, announced a 28-man squad with David Pagou — not Brys — as head coach. Pagou, officially listed on FIFA’s website, held a press conference to present the squad and outline Cameroon’s ambitions for the tournament, alongside a newly appointed coaching staff. The squad also featured several high-profile omissions, including former Manchester United goalkeeper André Onana, ex-Bayern Munich forward Eric Choupo-Moting, and veteran striker Vincent Aboubakar. Sources claim Eto’o may have pushed for Aboubakar’s exclusion to prevent him from breaking Eto’o’s all-time goal-scoring record. Aboubakar, 33, is currently 12 goals shy of surpassing Eto’o and could feasibly break the record during AFCON. The saga took another twist on Wednesday when Brys, rejecting his dismissal, announced a second Cameroon squad that reinstated the previously omitted players, further fueling the ongoing controversy. The drama has cast a shadow over Cameroon’s AFCON preparations, leaving fans and players uncertain just as the tournament is set to begin.

AFCON 2025: Onana Left Out As Cameroon Shockingly Omits Vincent Aboubakar From Squad

Cameroon has made a major surprise in its 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) squad, leaving out goalkeeper André Onana and veteran captain Vincent Aboubakar. Onana, the Trabzonspor shot-stopper who has been a regular presence for the Indomitable Lions, was not included by newly appointed head coach David Pagou. Aboubakar, a long-serving leader of the team, was also omitted from the traveling squad to Morocco. Manchester United forward Bryan Mbeumo has been named in the squad, strengthening Cameroon’s attacking options as the team gears up for the tournament starting December 21. The changes follow the sacking of coach Marc Brys and the hiring of Pagou, a seasoned Cameroonian coach and physical-education teacher. His selections have already sparked debate among fans and analysts, with many seeing the moves as part of a plan to refresh the squad and inject new energy. Cameroon, five-time AFCON champions, aim to bounce back on the continental stage after recent setbacks, including failing to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup under Brys.

Cameroonian Opposition Leader Anicet Ekane Dies In Custody In Yaounde

Cameroonian opposition leader Anicet Ekane has died in detention in Yaounde, his party’s vice president confirmed on Monday. “Anicet Ekane passed away this morning in Yaounde, where he had been transferred after his arrest in Douala at the end of October,” Valentin Dongmo of the African Movement for the New Independence of Cameroon (Manidem) said. The cause of the 74-year-old’s death has not been confirmed. Ekane, a veteran left-wing nationalist, was arrested in Douala on October 24, just before the announcement of presidential election results that secured 92-year-old Paul Biya an eighth term. He was a close ally of opposition figure Issa Tchiroma Bakary, who had challenged Biya’s decades-long rule. Dongmo said Ekane’s health worsened while in custody at the State Defence Secretariat (SED) in Yaounde. “We repeatedly requested that he be transferred to a hospital with adequate medical care, but our appeals were ignored. Just yesterday, his supporters again called for a medical evacuation,” he added. Ekane and other opposition figures had been detained after publicly supporting Bakary’s claim of victory ahead of the official results. Manidem described the arrests as “arbitrary” and intended to intimidate citizens. Born in Douala in 1951, Ekane joined the Union of the Peoples of Cameroon (UPC) in 1973 before founding Manidem in 1995. He was previously arrested in 1990 as part of the Yondo Black group, tried by a military court, and later pardoned. Ekane led Manidem for several years and ran for president in 2004 and 2011. News of his death has sparked widespread reactions on social media.

Cameroon’s President Paul Biya Wins Eighth Term in Presidential Election

Cameroon’s President Paul Biya Wins Eighth Term in Presidential Election

Cameroon’s President Paul Biya, 92, has been re-elected for an eighth term, receiving 53.7 percent of the vote, the Constitutional Council confirmed on Monday. Former government minister and opposition candidate Issa Tchiroma Bakary came second with 35.2 percent. Two days after the October 12 election, Tchiroma had claimed victory and called for demonstrations. Violence erupted on Sunday in Douala, the country’s economic capital, where clashes between security forces and opposition supporters left four people dead, according to the regional governor. Protesters reported that security personnel initially used tear gas before resorting to live ammunition. Since the election, Tchiroma’s supporters, who claim he actually won 54.8 percent of the vote to Biya’s 31.3 percent, have taken to the streets to assert his alleged victory. Most analysts had expected Biya, the world’s oldest serving head of state, to win another seven-year term, amid a political system critics say has been increasingly manipulated. Biya, only the second president since Cameroon gained independence from France in 1960, has retained power through strict control over politics, suppression of opposition, economic inequality, and ongoing separatist violence.

Cameroon Bars Main Opposition Leader Maurice Kamto From Presidential Election

Cameroon Bars Main Opposition Leader Maurice Kamto From Presidential Election

By Kamal Yalwa | July 27, 2025 YAOUNDÉ, Cameroon – Tensions are rising in Cameroon after the country’s electoral commission disqualified opposition leader Maurice Kamto from contesting the upcoming presidential election, a move that many fear could spark unrest and further entrench President Paul Biya’s decades-long rule. The decision, announced Saturday by the head of the Elections Cameroon (ELECAM) during a press conference in Yaoundé, confirmed a list of 13 approved candidates, notably excluding Kamto—widely seen as Biya’s strongest challenger. No official reason was provided for his disqualification. Candidates who were not approved have two days to appeal the ruling. Kamto, 71, submitted his candidacy last week under the African Movement for New Independence and Democracy (MANIDEM) after previously running in 2018 with his own party, the Cameroon Renaissance Movement (MRC). He finished second in that vote with 14 percent, while Biya, now 92, claimed a landslide win in a poll widely criticized for irregularities and low turnout. The exclusion of Kamto has sparked concerns of protests and political instability. Security forces were quickly deployed around ELECAM headquarters, major intersections in Yaoundé, and the commercial capital Douala, in anticipation of public outcry. On Friday, the United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) had issued a warning about possible demonstrations following the candidate list announcement. President Biya—Africa’s oldest serving leader—confirmed last month that he would seek an eighth term in office during the October 12 election, despite ongoing concerns over his health and growing public dissatisfaction. Cameroon has faced mounting crises under Biya’s rule, including widespread corruption, economic stagnation, and a violent separatist conflict in its English-speaking regions that has displaced tens of thousands and left a generation of children without access to education. Among the candidates approved by ELECAM are former Prime Minister Bello Bouba Maigari, a long-time Biya ally, and Issa Tchiroma Bakary, who resigned from his post as Minister of Employment in June to pursue the presidency. The final candidate list will be confirmed in the coming days following any appeals.

Pre-WAFCON Test: Super Falcons Won’t Pull Punches against Cameroon – Madugu

Head Coach Justine Madugu says the Super Falcons will entertain no hold-backs when they take on Cameroon’s Indomitable Lionesses in two friendly matches at the Remo Stars Stadium, Ikenne-Remo on Saturday and at the MKO Abiola Sports Complex, Abeokuta on Tuesday. “Our objectives for these two matches include improving our game philosophy and tactical approach. We want to observe and assess the players in line with our philosophy. We are determined to improve the team’s coordination, team spirit and mentality towards winning the Women AFCON. “Yes, these are friendly matches but we must approach things with the right mentality, with the attitude that we want to win, and with the mindset that we are already at the championship. It will not be right for us to treat the games with kid’s gloves and earn results that will have an untoward psychological effect on the team going to Morocco.” Madugu insists that the players understand the nature and size of the rivalry between Nigeria and Cameroon on the field of play, and will approach the games with the seriousness they deserve. “We must ensure a positive mentality and keep to the gameplan. It is important for us to use the games to underscore our preparedness for the Women AFCON.” The Falcons and the Lionesses are no strangers to one another. Most recently, the Falcons won a penultimate qualifying fixture for last year’s Olympics 1-0 on aggregate, courtesy of Esther Okoronkwo’s barnstorming effort at the MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja in the return leg. The win sent the nine-time champions to the final qualifying round, where they faced South Africa’s Banyana Banyana. That fixture was also settled by the odd goal – Rasheedat Ajibade’s penalty kick in Abuja. That feat qualified the Falcons for their first appearance at the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament in 16 years. When Cameroon hosted the Women Africa Cup of Nations nine years ago, the Falcons were there to deny them glory in the final, with Desire Oparanozie scoring a late goal to crown Nigeria for the eighth time. Madugu has invited an interesting blend of the old and the new, home girls and those plying their trade abroad, with captain Ajibade, multiple award-winning goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, defender Osinachi Ohale, midfielder Christy Ucheibe and forwards Toni Payne and Francisca Ordega the old and wise heads that the younger ones can learn so much from. The Super Falcons will be up against Tunisia, Algeria and Botswana in group B of the 13th Women AFCON in Morocco. SUPER FALCONS FOR LIONESSES’ CHALLENGE: Goalkeepers: Chiamaka Nnadozie (Paris FC, France); Linda Jiwuaku (Bayelsa Queens); Morufa Ademola (Edo Queens) Defenders: Osinachi Ohale (Pachucha Club de Futbol, Mexico); Shukurat Oladipo (AS Roma, Italy); Michelle Alozie (Houston Dash, USA); Rofiat Imuran (London City Lionesses, England); Sikiratu Isah (Nasarawa Amazons); Oluwatosin Demehin (Galatasaray Sportive, Turkey); Miracle Usani (Edo Queens); Blessing Ilivieda (Bayelsa Queens) Midfielders: Rasheedat Ajibade (Atletico Madrid, Spain); Deborah Abiodun (Dallas Trinity, USA); Jennifer Echegini (Paris Saint Germain, France); Josephine Mathias (Nasarawa Amazons); Christy Ucheibe (SL Benfica, Portugal); Amarachi Odoma (Edo Queens) Forwards: Toni Payne (Everton Ladies, England); Francisca Ordega (Ittihad Ladies Club, Saudi Arabia); Olamide Bolaji (Remo Stars Ladies); Ifeoma Onumonu (Montpellier FC, France); Omorinsola Babajide (Coasta Adeje Tenerife Egatesa (Spain); Emem Essien (Edo Queens)

Int’l Friendlies: Ajibade, Echegini, Babajide ‘Re Early Birds for Cameroon

Versatile defender Michelle Alozie has admitted her excitement at the upcoming Super Falcons’ friendly matches against bitter foes Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon, which will kick-start the final preparations for the 13th Women Africa Cup of Nations taking place in Morocco, 5th – 26th July. “I am excited for the upcoming training camp and to be back with the Super Falcons; it’s my first time in Ogun State! Everyone is looking forward to the Women AFCON and that is our main focus. The way we are treated has changed in the past few years, for the better, especially with our continued success over the years. I am happy to see the steady change as women’s sports across the world continue to achieve and fight for more equality,” said the Houston Dash of USA defensive linchpin. Alozie, who was part of the last Women AFCON finals also staged in Morocco three years ago, was also impressive as the Super Falcons wowed the global audience in reaching the Round of 16 at the 2023 FIFA World Cup finals, exiting without losing a match in regulation time. Alozie, captain Rasheedat Ajibade, Spain-based forward Omorinsola Babajide and PSG of France midfielder Jennifer Echegini will be among the early birds as the team’s camp opens in Ijebu-Ode on Monday, ahead of the first clash with the Lionesses on Saturday, 31st May. Midfielder Toni Payne, Deborah Abiodun and Ifeoma Onumonu are also slated to arrive in the country on Monday, just as defenders Osinachi Ohale, Oluwatosin Demehin, Rofiat Imuran, Shukurat Oladipo, Sikiratu Isah and Blessing Ilivieda, goalkeepers Linda Jiwuaku and Morufa Ademola, and midfielders Amarachi Odoma and Josephine Mathias, and forwards Francisca Ordega and Olamide Bolaji. Former junior international Miracle Usani and forward Emem Essien will equally arrive in camp on Monday. First-choice goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie will arrive on Tuesday, while Portugal-based midfielder Christy Ucheibe is scheduled to fly into the country on Wednesday. Training sessions will hold at the Remo Stars Stadium, Ikenne-Remo where the nine-time African champions take on the 2016 Women AFCON runners-up.
