How Super Eagles Reached 2026 FIFA World Cup CAF Play-off Tourney

The Super Eagles achieved a universal spread of 10 different scorers in their 15-goal haul in Group C of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying series, with only ace forward Victor Osimhen scoring more than once. The lanky marksman netted six times – in the process taking his Nigerian tally to 29 in 44 matches, only eight shy of legendary Rashidi Yekini’s record.   Defender Semi Ajayi, who will now miss the penultimate game of the CAF Play-off in Morocco next month after bagging two yellow cards in the series, scored Nigeria’s first goal in the series – the equalizer against Lesotho’s Crocodiles on Matchday 1 inside Uyo’s Godswill Akpabio Stadium on 16th November 2023.   Considering that Nigeria edged Burkina Faso only on goals’ tally at the end of the campaign to reach the Play-off, it means that Raphael Onyedika’s goal against Bénin Republic in Abidjan on Matchday 4 (even though Nigeria eventually lost 1-2) was as important as Ajayi’s equalizer against the Crocodiles in Uyo, just as Kelechi Iheanacho’s equalizer against Zimbabwe on Matchday 2 in Butare (Rwanda) on 19th November 2023 was as crucial as Calvin Bassey’s leveller against South Africa on Matchday 8 in Bloemfontein on 9th September 2025.   At the end of the qualifying campaign in Group C, the Super Eagles lost only one of its 10 matches, compared to South Africa’s Bafana Bafana that lost two (despite playing seven of its 10 matches on home soil) and Bénin Republic that lost three.   Chadian referee Alhadi Mahamat Allaou took charge of three of Eagles’ matches, viz the home draw with South Africa, the win over Rwanda in Uyo and the win over Lesotho in Polokwane. Gabonese Pierre Atcho took charge of two (the defeat by Bénin Republic in Abidjan on Matchday 4 and the draw with South Africa in Bloemfontein on Matchday 8.   The three-time African champions played all home games at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, and also played in Rwanda’s Stade Huye, Abidjan’s Felix Houphouet-Boigny, Kigali’s Amahoro Stadium and South African venues Free State Stadium (Bloemfontein) and New Peter Mokaba Stadium (Polokwane).   On their way from their Matchday 9 encounter with Lesotho, the team’s chartered ValueJet Airline aircraft suffered a cracked windscreen mid-air, but the professionalism, expertise and diligence of Captain Kamal Marafa saw the airplane safely guided back to the Luanda Airport where it had taken off after a refueling stop.   Now, on to the CAF Play-off Tournament in Morocco next month!     2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifying Matches: Nigeria’s Group C Campaign Matchday 1: Nigeria 1 (Semi Ajayi, 67) Lesotho 1 (Tabone Mkwanazi, 56) – 16/11/23. CAF President Patrice Motsepe has reaffirmed that the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations will go ahead in Morocco as planned, dismissing concerns that ongoing anti-government protests could disrupt preparations. For more than a week, thousands of young Moroccans have taken to the streets nightly, calling for an end to corruption, government reforms, and better access to social services like healthcare and education. The demonstrations, now in their ninth day, have highlighted deep public frustration over inequality and living conditions. Speaking during a meeting of African football leaders in Kinshasa, Motsepe said he was certain the tournament would not be affected by the unrest. “We are absolutely confident the AFCON will go ahead as planned. Morocco is plan A, Morocco is plan B, and Morocco is plan C,” he told delegates, including FIFA President Gianni Infantino. He added that the Confederation of African Football would work hand in hand with the Moroccan authorities and citizens to deliver what he described as “the most successful AFCON in history.” The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations is slated for December 21 to January 18 across nine Moroccan venues, with 24 teams expected to compete. Star players like Egypt’s Mohamed Salah and Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi are among those set to feature in the tournament.

WAFU-B U17 Championship: Eaglets Set to Pick AFCON Ticket at Starlets’ Expense

Five-time FIFA U 17 world champions, the Golden Eaglets of Nigeria will tackle the Black Starlets of Ghana in the second semi-final of the ongoing WAFU-B U17 Championship at the Stade Charles Konan Banny on Tuesday. Kick-off is 8pm Nigeria time. The Golden Eaglets have been in good form in the tournament, scoring four goals and conceding only one, in the process amassing four points to top the three-team group B. On their part, Ghana’s Black Starlets struggled to qualify to this stage. The team played 1-1 with Togo in their opening game in group A, came short with three goals’ deficit against host Cote d’ Ivoire in their second game and were on the verge of crashing out when the scoreline stood at 1-1 against Niger Republic, before two late goals in second half secured a win and qualification for semi-final. Therefore, this semi-final clash between the two West African giants promises to be an interesting encounter. However, the Eaglets have recorded more victories against their counterparts in the WAFU-B U17 Championship. Golden Eaglets defeated the Black Starlets 4-2 in the opening game of the 2022 edition hosted by Ghana in the city of Cape Coast. The same shouts of victory echoed in the camp of Golden Eaglets when the team defeated Black Starlets 3-2 in the bronze medal clash of the last edition held in Accra, Ghana. Another win for the Golden Eaglets in Tuesday’s clash will not only secure a berth in the final, but also qualification to the 2026 Africa U17 Cup of Nations.

SWAN Relaxes Nationwide Boycott, Opens Door for Dialogue with NFF

The National Leadership of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has relaxed its earlier directive to boycott all activities of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), following assurances that there are no immediate plans to amend its Statutes at the 2025 Annual General Assembly (AGA). SWAN, which had expressed strong concerns over its exclusion from the statutory structure of the NFF Congress, said the latest clarification by the Federation provides a fresh opportunity to engage in constructive dialogue for the overall good of Nigerian football. SWAN in a statement by the President, Mr. Isaiah Benjamin, through the Association’s Secretary General, Amb. Ikenna Okonkwo, said it remains committed to safeguarding the integrity of Nigerian football through responsible media advocacy, and as such, will always embrace dialogue where sincerity and transparency are evident. “Our position has always been about inclusivity and respect for the role of sports media as critical stakeholders in Nigerian football. Having carefully considered the NFF’s recent statement, we are willing to relax our boycott directive and open the door for dialogue, in the hope that this process will lead to lasting reforms that strengthen governance and representation in the Federation,” the SWAN President said. He noted that while the clarification from the NFF provides some relief, SWAN will continue to engage actively in ensuring that the media constituency is recognised and integrated into decision-making structures in line with global best practices and the provisions of Nigeria’s national sports policies. President Benjamin added that SWAN looks forward to participating in open consultations and workshops as part of efforts to build a more inclusive and transparent football administration, stressing that the Association’s ultimate concern remains the development and credibility of Nigerian football and other sports in the country. “We are optimism that both bodies can now work together in good faith, to advance reforms that will guarantee inclusivity and restore public confidence in the governance of Nigerian football,” he said.

CAF African Schools Football Championship: Nigeria’s Flag-Bearers to Emerge on Friday

Nigeria’s representatives to this year’s WAFU-B Schools Football Championship, a qualifying tournament for next year’s CAF African Schools Football Championship, will emerge on Friday, at the conclusion of the ongoing round-robin competition in Abuja. Matches are being played at the FIFA Goal Project inside the MKO Abiola National Stadium and the Area 3 Football Pitch, with representative teams of the FCT, Adamawa, Gombe and Lagos States involved in the female category. The FCT, Kaduna, Delta, Enugu, Ekiti and Taraba States are represented in the male category. The winner-school in each category will fly Nigeria’s flag at the WAFU-B Schools Football Championship that will hold in Burkina Faso, 27th – 30th November. While the names of the winner-schools will be adopted, players deemed to be exceptional from other schools will be co-opted to form a ‘Schools National Team.’ Successful schools at the WAFU-B tournament will join other qualifiers from the CECAFA (East & Central Africa), COSAFA (Southern Africa), UNAF (Northern Africa), UNIFFAC (Central Africa) and WAFU-A at next year’s CAF African Schools Football Championship.

All 20 players of the U17 Boys National Team, Golden Eaglets, to this year’s WAFU-B U17 Boys Tournament in Yamoussoukro, Cote d’Ivoire have scaled the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) hurdles. The tests were conducted on the players in the early hours of Thursday by the CAF Medical Team. The Eaglets will play their first match of the competition on Wednesday, 24th September against their counterparts from Benin Republic. They will also play Burkina Faso in group B. Former African Champions, Super Eagles have dropped one spot in World football governing body, FIFA monthly world ranking. The Eric Chelle lads are ranked 45th in the world and are sixth in Africa behind Morocco, Senegal, Egypt, Algeria and Cote d’Ivoire. Nigeria won 1483.86 points as against her 1484.26 points in July. Meanwhile, Spain have returned to the ranking summit after a making a sensational start to qualifying for World Cup 26. They kicked off their campaign with a 3-0 win in Bulgaria, then made it back-to-back away victories with a 6-0 trouncing of Turkey. La Roja last topped the ranking back in June 2014, when they were world and European champions. Argentina – the reigning world champions – booked their ticket to next year’s global finals back in March and had already secured top spot in the CONMEBOL qualifying standings before their final-round defeat to Ecuador. That loss has resulted in them losing their grip as the planet’s top-ranked team, however. La Albiceleste are now third, with France second after back-to-back wins over Ukraine and Iceland.
