Katsina United Fans Attack Barau FC Player, Forcing NPFL Match to Be Stopped
Katsina United’s home clash with Barau FC in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) was stopped on Saturday after Barau player Nana Abraham was attacked by angry fans. The incident occurred shortly after Barau’s Orji Kalu scored a 69th-minute equaliser to level the game at 1-1, sparking outrage among some supporters. Abraham, involved in the build-up to the goal, was chased and assaulted on the pitch, sustaining a deep cut to his neck. Teammates and officials rushed to intervene and protect him. Barau FC confirmed the incident on their official X account, announcing the temporary halt of the match. “70’ The match is temporarily halted following an attack on Barau FC player, Nana Abraham. Katsina United | 1-1 | Barau FC,” the club posted. Security officers were deployed to restore order in the stadium. As of now, neither NPFL management nor Katsina United has released an official statement. The attack highlights ongoing concerns about fan violence in Nigerian football. Last month, Kano Pillars were fined ₦9.5 million, docked three points, and had their stadium closed after fans invaded the pitch during a match against Shooting Stars of Ibadan. Football authorities continue to call for stricter sanctions and stronger security to protect players during league games.
