Sheikh Ahmad Gumi Defends Talks With Bandits, Labels Critics “Spineless and Unpatriotic”

Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has defended his interactions with bandits, responding to calls for his arrest over his comments on national security and banditry. In a statement shared on Facebook on Sunday, Gumi described his critics as “spineless, irresponsible and unpatriotic imbecilic people,” accusing them of politicising his peace efforts rather than focusing on the country’s growing insecurity. He insisted that his engagement with criminal groups is part of a legitimate effort to promote peace. Gumi said the strongest demands for his arrest are driven by “bigotry, ignorance and intolerance for opposing views,” adding that he has committed no offence in his work to negotiate with bandits. “ARREST HIM!!! These are the only words some spineless, irresponsible and unpatriotic imbecilic people can utter,” he wrote. He highlighted a major peace mission he led in January 2021 at Sabon Garin Yadi forest in Giwa Local Government Area of Kaduna State. Gumi was accompanied by the then Kaduna State Commissioner of Police, representing the Inspector-General of Police. During the mission, over 600 armed bandits and their commanders attended meetings aimed at persuading them to surrender their weapons, embrace dialogue, and halt attacks on communities. “This meeting was part of a peace initiative where we preached to over 600 bandits and their commanders, who agreed to lay down their arms in exchange for security and basic amenities,” he said. The cleric stressed that all negotiations were conducted transparently, with the full knowledge and approval of the authorities, and remained committed to pursuing peaceful solutions to the country’s security challenges.

Activist Mahdi Shehu Raises Alarm Over ‘Victory Parade’ by Armed Bandits in Katsina

Prominent activist Mahdi Shehu has sounded the alarm over what he described as a “victory parade” staged by armed bandits in Bakori Local Government Area of Katsina State, warning that criminal groups now operate with alarming impunity across parts of Northern Nigeria. In a post on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account, Shehu said heavily armed bandits, clad in full combat uniforms, recently gathered in Bakori under the guise of a “peace deal” with a local community they had earlier subdued. He lamented that over the past decade, banditry has claimed countless lives and left hundreds of thousands killed, maimed, raped, or displaced, devastating rural economies and pushing many communities into poverty and fear. According to Shehu, many residents have been forced to submit to the bandits’ authority just to survive, agreeing to their conditions to gain temporary safety, access farmlands, or carry out basic trade in local markets. “The bandits have effectively carved out their own state within a state, where their rules override those of the government,” Shehu wrote. He further warned that similar patterns of control and coercion are now evident in several other parts of Northern Nigeria, where state presence is weak and local populations are left vulnerable. The activist’s revelations have sparked widespread concern online, with many Nigerians expressing outrage over the deepening insecurity and the growing influence of non-state armed groups in rural communities. Observers say the situation underscores the urgent need for stronger security operations, community resilience programs, and sustained government intervention to reclaim territories under bandit control.

Tension in Kogi West as Bandits Lay Siege on Yoruba-Speaking Communities

By Trend Brio News| October 12, 2025 KOGI STATE, Nigeria – Fear and uncertainty have gripped the Kogi West Senatorial District, the Yoruba-speaking region of Kogi State, as escalating bandit attacks continue to terrorize residents across the area’s seven local government areas. Once known for its peaceful, agrarian communities, the region has become a hotspot of insecurity, with villagers abandoning their homes and farmlands in droves. Those who remain live in constant fear, unable to farm or move freely as armed gangs launch frequent assaults on settlements. According to local sources, numerous lives have been lost, including those of policemen and vigilante members, in recent attacks. The bandits, believed to have migrated from parts of the North-West and North-Central regions, are said to be operating from dense forest hideouts where they plan kidnappings and raids on travelers and farmers. “The forests that once gave us food and peace are now where death lives,” lamented a resident of Kabba, who described how entire communities have been forced to relocate. Poor Roads Fuel Insecurity The deteriorating infrastructure in Kogi West has worsened the crisis. Key roads, such as the Ilorin–Omuaran–Kabba Highway, have reportedly collapsed after years of neglect by both state and federal authorities, leaving several communities inaccessible and vulnerable to criminal activities. Only a handful of towns—mainly local government headquarters—have paved roads, making it nearly impossible for security forces to respond quickly to distress calls or patrol remote areas. A Region in Distress For many locals, the insecurity is only the latest chapter in a long history of government neglect. Despite the region’s contributions to agriculture and commerce, residents say they have been marginalized in infrastructure and development projects. “Our people can no longer go to the farm or market without fear,” said a community leader. “We have been forgotten by those in power.” As the situation worsens, calls are growing for urgent government intervention, including improved road access, better policing, and coordinated security operations to reclaim the forests and restore peace to the embattled region.

Appreciation Message from Brigadier General Ismaila Abdullahi (Rtd)

No One is Safe: Even Generals Must Pay Bandits for Freedom

Appreciation Message from Brigadier General Ismaila Abdullahi (Rtd)Dated: 4th April 2025 On behalf of Brigadier General M.I. Tsiga, friends, colleagues, and associates, I, Brigadier General Ismaila Abdullahi (Rtd), wish to express our deepest gratitude to all who stood by us during a most distressing period—the abduction and eventual release of General M.I. Tsiga. General Tsiga was forcibly taken from his residence in Tsiga Town, Bakori LGA, Katsina State, on the 5th of February 2025. From the moment we received the shocking news, Major General L.B. Bunza and I began collaborating closely to ensure his safe return. On the 9th of February 2025, we established a WhatsApp platform simply named “TSIGA” to keep the public informed and to mobilize support for the cause. When the abductors eventually demanded a ransom of ₦400,000,000, we made the difficult decision to appeal for donations through the platform. The response was nothing short of extraordinary. Over 300 patriotic Nigerians comprising retired and serving military officers, academics, ambassadors, businesspeople, and civilians from every walk of liferallied together in solidarity. To ensure full transparency and accountability, we agreed that all donations should be sent directly to General Tsiga’s Unity Bank account, which was promptly shared by his son, Kamal. Initially, I provided updates on incoming donations, but due to valid security concerns raised by some members, we halted public updates while maintaining accurate internal records. Between 22nd February and 15th March 2025, the generous outpouring of support reinforced one powerful truth: Together, we can. On behalf of General Tsiga and his family, I thank each and every one of you for your financial, moral, and spiritual support. Your compassion and unity were instrumental in securing his safe release. As I write this, on 4th April 2025, I feel a profound sense of fulfillment. Our collective effort has achieved its goal—General M.I. Tsiga is free. Thank you all. May God bless and protect you and your families. Signed:Brigadier General Ismaila Abdullahi (Rtd)4 April 2025
