Mission X: Mary Akinsola joins Super Falcons as Media Officer

The Nigeria Football Federation has appointed Mary Akinsola, a media and public relations expert, as the media officer of the Senior Women National Team, Super Falcons. Miss Akinsola brings over 10 years of experience in communications and sports management to the role, having previously worked with Warner Bros Discovery (Eurosport) as a production/commentary coordinator, with sportsgazette.uk as a sports writer, editor and digital media manager, and with ACLSports.com as a podcast host and writer. She also worked with Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State as a sportscaster, writer and producer. Akinsola, who holds a master’s degree in international sports journalism from St. Mary’s University, London has managed production communications for Eurosport during a number of major sporting events, including the Olympic Games, tennis grand slams, the English Premier League and major European club competitions. She joins an ambitious squad that is targeting a record-extending 10th continental title, when the 13th Women Africa Cup of Nations finals commences in Morocco on 5th July. She believes her passion for the game and ceaseless quest for excellence matches those of the Super Falcons, and is committed to promoting the Nigeria senior women team’s story and connecting with stakeholders and supporters globally.

Oliseh Bags Int’l Football Association Board Appointment

Former Super Eagles manager and captain Sunday Oliseh has been appointed a member of the International Football Association Board (IFAB). Oliseh broke the cheering news on his official twitter handle now X on Monday. He wrote; “Thrilled to announce my appointment to the International Football Association Board (IFAB)! “IFAB is the global guardian of football’s laws, responsible for determining the laws of football, shaping the beautiful game for players and fans worldwide. “Honoured to contribute to its mission!” Recalled Oliseh played 55 international matches and scored 4 goals for Nigeria, and played at the 1994 and 1998 FIFA World Cups. NFF Congratulates Philip Shaibu on Appointment as DG, NIS

The Nigeria Football Federation has felicitated with the former Deputy Governor of Edo State, His Excellency Comrade Philip Shaibu on his appointment as Director General of the National Institute for Sports (NIS). The President and Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces, His Excellency Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR on Saturday named Shaibu as the new chief executive of the nation’s principal citadel of sports science and research, to take over from Professor Olawale Moronkola with immediate effect. “The NFF heartily congratulates His Excellency Philip Shaibu on this appointment and we have no doubt that he has the intellectual capacity, passion, knowledge of sports science and the energy and temperament to turn things around at the NIS. “We wish Comrade Shaibu the very best in this new but certainly-exciting journey in his odyssey and we believe that he has the ability to justify the confidence reposed in him by Mr. President,” President of NFF, Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau (MON) said. A former students union leader, Comrade Shaibu demonstrated a deep love and enthusiasm for sports development and sustainability during his time as Edo State’s number two man, and the impact of his policies, great ideas and positive interventions are still being felt in the State. The National Institute for Sports was established in 1974 as a research and training institute, with the mandate to produce top-notch coaches, sports scientists and sports managers, and for the purpose of conducting research, all with the objective of improving Nigeria’s performance in sports internationally.

Ex-West Ham boss Lopetegui Named Qatar Manager

Julen Lopetegui has been appointed head coach of the Qatar national team, almost four months after being sacked by West Ham. The 58-year-old Spaniard’s deal runs until 2027 and takes in the ongoing qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup. Qatar, who participated at the last World Cup as hosts, failed to secure a spot for next year’s finals in the initial qualification stage but can still progress with further rounds being played. Lopetegui has previously worked in international football as Spain manager. He took over in 2016 but was sacked two days before the 2018 World Cup after being appointed Real Madrid manager. His tenure in Madrid ended after four and a half months, after which he took charge of Sevilla and won the Europa League. He moved to Wolves in November 2022 but left the following summer. He was named West Ham manager at the start of the current season but was sacked and replaced by Graham Potter after six months, having recorded only six league wins.

Ibas Appoints Administrators for 23 Rivers LGs

Rivers State Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.), has approved the appointment of administrators for the 23 Local Government Areas of the state. This comes less than 24 hours after a Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt reportedly restrained him from appointing administrators to oversee the affairs of the local government councils. The order was issued by Justice Adam Muhammed on Tuesday in suit No. FHC/PH/CS/46/2025 in the case filed by PILEX Centre for Civic Education Initiative led by Courage Msirimovu against the Sole Administrator in his official capacity. However, Ibas also approved the constitution of some boards of agencies, commissions and parastatals which he had earlier suspended. The approval was contained in a Special Government Announcement issued on Wednesday morning by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Ibibia Worika. The statement said the appointments take immediate effect. Mr Okroiyobi Animete was appointed as administrator for Abua/Odual LG, Mr Goodluck M Iheanacho for Ahoada East LG, Mr Promise Jacob for Ahoada West LG, among others. The statement read, “His Excellency, The Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral (Rtd) Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas CFR, has approved the appointments of administrators for the 23 Local Government Areas of Rivers State. “He has also approved the reconstitution of some boards of agencies, commissions, and parastatals, earlier suspended. “All appointments take effect from Monday, the 7th of April 2025.” Recall that last week, the sole administrator had suspended all heads of Ministries, Departments and Agencies in the state with immediate effect. In a separate development, Ibas also cancelled all pending procurement and tender processes carried out by Ministries, Departments and Agencies in the state. He said the cancellation became necessary following the Supreme Court judgment and the absence of an appropriation law within the period. The sole administrator, according to a previous statement also issued by the SSG, directed all MDAs that carried out such tender processes for projects in their respective offices to refund such fees to the respective contractors immediately.

Tinubu Appoints Governing Council, Principal Officers of Federal University Iyin Ekiti

President Bola Tinubu has announced the appointment of the Pro-Chancellor, Governing Council members, and Principal Officers of the new Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences in Iyin Ekiti, Ekiti State. Senator Binta Masi Garba has been appointed Pro-Chancellor and Chairperson of the Governing Council. A seasoned politician, businesswoman, and administrator, Senator Garba represented the Adamawa North Senatorial District in the Senate from 2015 to 2019 and served consecutively in the House of Representatives from 1999 to 2011.
