JUST IN: Segun Oni Defects to APC

Former Ekiti State Governor Olusegun Oni has officially dumped the Social Democratic Party for the ruling All Progressives Congress, completing his registration at his country home in Ifaki Ekiti. Confirming the development, the Coordinator of the APC e-registration exercise in Ekiti State and Commissioner for Youth Development, Adesola Adedayo, described Oni’s defection as a major gain for the party. He said the former governor’s decision to formally register with the APC had given a strong push to the ongoing registration exercise across the state. “We registered former Governor Segun Oni as a member of our great party. This significant political move will help the ongoing online registration of our members in Ekiti,” Adedayo said. He further praised Oni as “a resourceful and popular leader who will add tremendous value to the party and strengthen its winning streak,” noting that his move marked “a seismic shift in the political realignment ahead of the Ekiti governorship poll and the general elections.” Speaking on Oni’s grassroots influence, the commissioner said, “When it comes to grassroots politics, former Governor Oni is a respected individual. He is well-loved at the grassroots, and the intention of our registration is to attract more people into the APC. Having an individual like the former governor with us at this crucial time is a big plus.” Adedayo also cautioned party leaders against complacency, stressing that sustained mobilisation was key to strengthening the APC’s numerical strength at the grassroots. He added that Oni’s registration came shortly after Governor Biodun Oyebanji revalidated his membership, urging party faithful across the state “to embark on aggressive mobilisation drives to fortify the APC at the local level.” “This exercise is very important as it will strengthen our party’s structures and ensure proper documentation of members at the grassroots,” he said, adding that the e-registration process was crucial to the party’s electoral success and the governor’s re-election bid.

Rivers APC Rejects Impeachment Threat Against Governor Fubara

The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has condemned moves in the State House of Assembly to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, describing the action as “untenable” and warning against efforts that could destabilize the state government. The statement follows reports that the Rivers State House of Assembly had formally initiated impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara. Speaker Martins Amaewhule reportedly labelled the governor a “mistake” and accused him of gross misconduct. In response, APC spokesperson Darlington Nwauju issued a statement emphasizing the party’s rejection of the impeachment move. “The leadership of the APC in Rivers State has noted the recent developments in the State House of Assembly. While we respect the legislature’s independence and constitutional responsibility for checks and balances, we categorically reject any attempt to remove our Governor and his deputy through impeachment,” the statement read. Nwauju argued that the impeachment threat is rooted in budget issues, noting that under the 2025 emergency rule, a budget totaling ₦1.485 trillion was transmitted to and approved by the National Assembly, covering a full year until August 2026. He added that the Governor is entitled under the constitution to a six-month spending window into a new fiscal year and may choose not to present a supplementary budget. The APC warned lawmakers, especially party members, to resist external pressures aimed at destabilizing the government. “Our party will take all necessary steps to protect the APC-led government in Rivers State from internal conflicts. We call on members of the State Assembly to immediately halt the impeachment process to safeguard the state’s progress and preserve the party’s reputation. Let Rivers State remain a democracy, not a politicocracy,” the statement concluded. The party reiterated its commitment to ensuring the stability of the Fubara administration and the continued development of Rivers State.

Odu completed her APC registration on Sunday at Akabuka, Ward 8, Unit 11 in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area and subsequently toured all six zones of the LGA to raise awareness about the party’s ongoing e-registration exercise. The development was confirmed in a statement on Monday by Owupele Benebo, Head of Press, Office of the Deputy Governor. Addressing stakeholders, Odu explained that her move aligns with the recent shift by Governor Fubara and urged residents to register with the APC in support of both the President and the governor. “The aim is to further strengthen the support base of President Bola Tinubu and Governor Siminalayi Fubara,” she said. “During our tour, large crowds welcomed us, saying they would follow wherever I go, and wherever Governor Fubara and President Tinubu go. I have visited all six zones — Egi, Omoku, Osomini, Igburu, Egbema, and Ndoni — and the reception has been overwhelming.” Odu described the defection as a significant boost to the APC’s presence in the LGA and an indication of growing grassroots support for the party leadership. The statement also noted that hundreds of Labour Party members in Ndoni joined the APC during her tour, expressing excitement about their new political alignment.

Bauchi Governor Bala Mohammed Accuses Federal Government Of Using EFCC To Target Him Over APC Refusal

Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed has accused the Federal Government of using the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to target him and members of his cabinet because he refused to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The governor made the allegation on Wednesday in Bauchi while signing the 2026 appropriation bill into law, following an ambassadorial award for safety from the Institute of Safety Professionals in Nigeria. He revealed that one of his commissioners is currently being held by the EFCC. “As a governor and leader of the opposition, my commissioner has been detained and will not be released. Even with constitutional immunity, my name was mentioned in a court motion in Nigeria—me, Bala Mohammed,” he said. Mohammed claimed that the APC-led federal government is using institutions like the EFCC and the courts to harass Nigerians who are not aligned with the ruling party. He insisted that no amount of pressure would force him to join the APC. The statement comes after the EFCC arraigned Bauchi State Commissioner for Finance, Yakubu Adamu, over alleged N5.79 billion money laundering. Adamu is accused of conspiring with two others, who remain at large, to launder N4.65 billion between June and December 2023. The governor expressed frustration that despite his immunity, his name was included in the EFCC motion against his commissioner. “I woke up to a notification accusing me of terrorism. I don’t need to respond publicly, but politics has clearly taken a troubling turn in Nigeria,” he said. As chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum, Mohammed warned that he would no longer remain silent if the federal government continues what he described as persecution. “If they don’t stop, we are going to declare war. I won’t allow anyone to criminalise me because I’m not in their party, and I refuse to join the APC,” he stated. He also criticised the federal government for failing to deliver projects in Bauchi, pointing out that despite controlling the bulk of national resources, it has not provided a single kilometre of road or water infrastructure in the state. Mohammed further condemned the planned implementation of new tax laws without addressing alleged discrepancies in the gazetted copy.

Abba Kabir Yusuf Set To Dump NNPP For APC

Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf is reportedly on the verge of dumping the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), unless there is a last-minute change of plans. Sources familiar with the development said the governor is prepared to defect with or without the approval of his long-time political mentor, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. The move is said to have followed wide-ranging consultations with key stakeholders, including members of the Kano State House of Assembly, local government chairmen, and some federal lawmakers from the state. Momentum around the planned defection intensified on Sunday after a video circulated online showing Yusuf’s Director of Protocol, Abdullahi Ibrahim Rogo, announcing that political leaders in Rogo Local Government Area had agreed to follow the governor to the APC. Speaking alongside party officials, Rogo said influential figures within the Kwankwasiyya movement in the area had concluded that both Kwankwaso and Yusuf should move to the ruling party. “We at Rogo Local Government, under the leadership of Speaker Jibrin Ismail Falgore, myself, the council chairman, caucus leaders, elders, women and youth leaders, have resolved that Kwankwaso is our leader, and that he and Governor Yusuf should take us to APC,” Rogo said. “This resolution is in the best interest of our people, our country, and even Kwankwaso himself. We believe his presidential ambition can be realised in APC if we join now. We remain loyal to Kwankwasiyya, but for now, joining APC is the solution,” he added, while also calling on supporters to avoid abusive politics. Support for the planned switch also emerged from Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area. Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, Director-General of Media and Publicity at the Kano Government House, backed the decision of his local caucus to follow Yusuf to the APC. The LGA chairman, Anas Danmaliki, acknowledged internal divisions within the Kwankwasiyya movement, saying it had split into pro-masses and anti-masses factions, but maintained that he and his councillors would stand with the governor. According to sources, Yusuf is expected to formally announce his defection in the first week of January. Meanwhile, Senator Kwankwaso reportedly summoned members of the Kano State House of Assembly to a meeting last Friday, where he admitted that the governor was set to leave the NNPP. He reportedly told lawmakers that anyone who wished to follow Yusuf was free to do so, but questioned the justification for the move, reminding them that the party won the 2023 elections “with nobody but God.” Another source disclosed that when the lawmakers later met with Yusuf, he described his decision to join the APC as “irreversible.” Yusuf remains the only governor elected on the NNPP platform in the 2023 general elections.

Six Zamfara Lawmakers Leave PDP For APC

Six members of the Zamfara State House of Assembly have defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), blaming internal party conflicts and poor governance in the state for their decision. The lawmakers made their intentions known on Thursday through individual letters addressed to the Speaker of the House. The defectors are Bashar Aliyu Gummi (Gummi I), Nasiru Abdullahi Maru (Maru North), Bashir Abubakar Masama (Bukkuyum North), Bashir Bello (Bungudu West), Amiru Ahmad Keta (Tsafe West), and Muktar Nasir Kaura (Kaura North). In their letters, titled “Notice of Resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC),” they cited unresolved crises within the PDP that have led to factional divisions. One of the lawmakers wrote: “I write to formally inform the Honourable Speaker and Honourable Members of this Honourable House of my decision to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) due to lingering and unresolved crises in my party, which have resulted in factional leadership.” They also invoked Section 109(1)(g) of the 1999 Nigerian Constitution (as amended), which allows legislators to switch parties if there is a division within their political party. The lawmakers further criticised the PDP-led state government under Governor Dauda Lawal, accusing it of failing to address insecurity and not fulfilling campaign promises. “My decision is in line with Section 109(1)(g) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), and is also based on the poor leadership of Governor Dauda Lawal, particularly his failure to address security challenges and fulfil campaign promises,” the letters added.

Six Rivers State PDP Lawmakers Join APC, Leaving Party With Only Two House Seats

Six lawmakers from Rivers State in the House of Representatives have defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The defecting members are Robinson Dekor, Solomon Bob, Cyril Hart, Victor Obuzor, Blessing Amadi, and Felix Nwaeke. Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, read their letters of defection on Tuesday, citing “divisions and unresolved political crisis in the PDP” as the reason for their move. The lawmakers said the internal conflicts in the PDP had made it difficult for them to pursue their political goals and pledged to support the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu. The defection reduces the PDP’s Rivers State caucus in the House from 12 to just two members. Last week, the party had already lost three representatives—Boniface Emerengwa, Awaji-Inombek Abiante, and Boma Goodhead—to the APC. The remaining PDP lawmakers from Rivers State are House Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda and Kelechi Nwogu.
