Usyk Warns Anthony Joshua Could “Kill” Jake Paul in December Showdown

Oleksandr Usyk has issued a serious warning ahead of Jake Paul’s highly anticipated fight with Anthony Joshua on December 19 in Miami, suggesting the YouTuber-turned-boxer could face a dangerous challenge. The former undisputed heavyweight champion, who has battled Joshua in two grueling bouts, pointed to the vast gap in size and experience between the fighters. Recent weigh-ins show Joshua outweighs Paul by 52 pounds and stands five inches taller, a difference Usyk believes is significant. “If Anthony Joshua wants, he will kill this guy,” Usyk told Boxing Scene. Usyk compared the two fighters’ careers, emphasizing Joshua’s accomplishments versus Paul’s rapid rise in boxing. “Anthony Joshua is an Olympic champion, first. Jake Paul, yeah, a sportsman, a YouTuber, a showman. Joshua is Rolls-Royce; Jake is a Fiat. Listen, it’s true. It’s just true… Yes, I will pray for Jake Paul. Because I want to fight with Jake Paul in the octagon,” he added. Having faced larger opponents himself, Usyk knows the challenges of moving up in weight. He dominated the cruiserweight division before stepping into heavyweight, eventually becoming an undisputed champion twice, often giving away size and weight. Still, he stressed that Paul’s journey is nothing like his own. Before turning professional in 2020, Paul had only one amateur white-collar bout, while Joshua had already secured Olympic gold and unified heavyweight titles. Recently, Usyk met Paul in what appeared to be a playful hint at a potential MMA fight, though any future plans will depend on Paul navigating what many expect to be the toughest fight of his career at the Kaseya Centre. Paul comes into the bout with a 12-1 record, mostly against aging or limited opponents, with his only loss to Tommy Fury in 2024.

Jake Paul to Fight Ex-heavyweight Champ Anthony Joshua on Dec. 19

YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul will face former two-time unified heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua in a professional heavyweight boxing match on December 19 at Kaseya Center in Miami, Most Valuable Promotions told ESPN on Monday. The fight — which will be streamed live on Netflix — is scheduled for eight, 3-minute rounds and the fighters will wear 10-ounce gloves, the standard for heavyweight fights. It’s an about face for Paul, 27, who was originally slated to take on WBA lightweight champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis in an exhibition fight on November 14. However, the bout was canceled after Davis was named in a civil lawsuit filed by an ex-girlfriend accusing the boxer of aggravated battery, false imprisonment, kidnapping and intentional infliction of emotional distress. Instead of an exhibition against a hard-hitting pro boxer who campaigned at 130 pounds, Paul will now face a two-time heavyweight champion and Olympic gold medalist in a sanctioned professional boxing match who has fought as high as 256 pounds, over 100 pounds heavier than Davis. Paul has campaigned primarily as a cruiserweight with a 200-pound weight limit, although he weighed 227.25 pounds for his heavyweight exhibition fight with Mike Tyson in 2024. “This isn’t an AI simulation. This is Judgment Day,” Paul said in a statement. “A professional heavyweight fight against an elite world champion in his prime. When I beat Anthony Joshua, every doubt disappears, and no one can deny me the opportunity to fight for a world title. To all my haters, this is what you wanted. To the people of the United Kingdom, I am sorry. On Friday, December 19, under the lights in Miami, live globally only on Netflix, the torch gets passed and Britain’s Goliath gets put to sleep.” Paul (12-1, 7 KOs) is still a novice in the sport with no notable amateur experience and only 70 total rounds boxed as a pro since 2020. He’ll take a massive step up from MMA fighters and journeyman boxers to face Joshua (28-4, 25 KOs), one of the hardest hitting and most decorated heavyweights and in the world with over 160 rounds boxed in his 12 years as a professional. “Jake or anyone can get this work. No mercy,” Joshua, 36, said in a statement. “I took some time out and I’m coming back with a mega show. It’s a big opportunity for me. Whether you like it or not, I’m here to do massive numbers, have big fights and break every record whilst keeping cool, calm and collected. Mark my words, you’ll see a lot more fighters take these opportunities in the future. I’m about to break the internet over Jake Paul’s face.” In his last outing in September 2024, Joshua was stopped in the fifth round of his IBF title fight against Daniel Dubois. He elected to have elbow surgery following the loss and had been sidelined since. Eddie Hearn, Joshua’s promoter at Matchroom Boxing, told ESPN earlier this year that his charge would fight once in 2025 before targeting a massive all-British heavyweight fight with the currently retired Tyson Fury. However, few expected the one fight in 2025 would be against Paul. “Everyone laughed when Jake Paul said in March that he wanted to fight AJ in 2026,” said Nakisa Bidarian, CEO of Most Valuable Promotions. “Well, plans changed, and in under two weeks, MVP and Netflix have made one of the biggest fights of all time. Now, as only Jake Paul could and would do, he’s fighting one of the most fearsome boxers in the world. Joshua has every advantage in this fight, except one — the delusional confidence of Jake Paul, and if anyone can shock the world, it’s him. This is a global clash between two of the most recognizable figures in the sport, Jake, the face of boxing’s new era, and Joshua, the King of UK boxing. Joshua had been targeted by Paul for a fight in 2026. However, those plans were expedited following the cancelation of the Davis fight. Most Valuable Promotions told ESPN that Paul would fight before the end of the year following the Davis cancelation but needed to quickly find an opponent. The Ring was the first to report last week that the two sides were negotiating and now Paul will get the toughest test of his young career that very few expect him to be remotely competitive in. “They say be careful what you wish for, kind of feel like that’s all I need to say,” Hearn said. “Two of the biggest names in the sport will collide on Dec 19. Whilst I admire Jake’s balls, he’s going to find out the hard way in Miami.”

Anthony Joshua Could Earn £70 Million in Potential Showdown With Jake Paul

Anthony Joshua could pocket a staggering £70 million from a potential blockbuster showdown with internet sensation-turned-boxer Jake Paul, as advanced negotiations continue for a mega-fight likely to be staged in Miami next month. Sources close to the talks say a total prize purse of around £140 million is on the table, with Joshua and Paul expected to split it evenly if the deal goes through. Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, cautioned on Thursday that both sides are still ironing out details, but insiders suggest an official announcement could come as early as next week. The bout would be a full professional contest under Queensbury rules, not an exhibition. A key driver behind the negotiations is Netflix, which has shown strong interest in broadcasting the fight. The streaming giant, currently producing a documentary on Joshua, previously aired Paul’s November 2024 clash with Mike Tyson, which drew over 60 million viewers. The talks follow the cancellation of Paul’s previously scheduled fight with lightweight champion Gervonta Davis, reopening the possibility of a bout with Joshua after over a year of speculation. “It is not done yet,” Hearn told Daily Mail Sport. “There has been a lot of gun jumping on this. I think Jake Paul would be mad to take the fight, but we are in talks. We were discussing a very low-key fight for AJ, but an opportunity has come up to make 50 times more money.” Addressing criticism over the potential matchup, Hearn added, “Would it be great for Joshua’s legacy? No. But I’ll tell you what it is – two-time heavyweight world champion and an Olympic gold medal. This is an opportunity and fair play to Paul if he wants to get in that ring because AJ won’t be messing about.” Paul currently holds a 12-1 record, mostly built against lesser-known opponents and ageing legends, with his only defeat coming to Tommy Fury. Tyson Fury’s promoter, Frank Warren, also weighed in, saying, “People are going to criticise it, but I don’t see it that way. As long as these guys are both fit, which they are, then I don’t have a problem. It will get a huge audience – AJ doesn’t cause a lot of noise in the US, and Paul does. People like car crashes. It will do well.” Beyond the financial incentives, Joshua is motivated to shake off ring rust following his extended hiatus. He resumed light training earlier this year, underwent minor elbow surgery in May, and ramped up conditioning again in October.

Anthony Joshua May Fight in Ghana on December 20

Anthony Joshua and Matchroom Boxing will co-promote a show in Ghana, Africa, on December 20, and there remains a chance that Joshua could yet appear on that bill.   Joshua has longed for a fight in Africa, and the Legon Sports Stadium event is topped by the attractive light-heavyweight clash between Craig Richards and Dan Azeez, with Indian star Nishant Dev and heavyweight prospect Leo Atang also slated to appear.   BoxingScene understands that Joshua is in the frame to fight, although any announcement on his next steps would likely only be confirmed by the former heavyweight champion himself.   Matchroom’s Eddie Hearn has been inundated with inquiries about Joshua’s return and, asked recently by Boxing Social whether Joshua could box in 2025, Hearn said: “Possibly.”   Then, Hearn added: “There will be no big-name fight this year. It wouldn’t be a headline, it wouldn’t be a pay-per-view, you don’t have to moan about it, it can just be part of something that’s already existed and on sale – so there would be no one moaning. It’s just part of the development of getting into position of being 100 per cent ready for the big gamble.   “If he fights this year, he won’t headline. We want to work almost in silence and improve and get into the mode of being 100 per cent ready. This is about development and a bit of activity. It’s not about the money, it’s if we’re working on things… sometimes if you’ve been out of the ring for so long and you’re working on things, maybe you’ve got other people in different camps you’re working with, you don’t want to go back to an arena in front of 80,000 in a really tough fight and know that you’ve got to get it right after 16 months… This is for us. This is for ‘AJ’.”   Ghana has lifted its brief ban on professional boxing after two fatalities in the country’s prize rings.   The Ghana Boxing Federation’s interim management committee and their medical sub-committee filed “an upgraded draft of comprehensive medical and safety protocols for boxing in Ghana”, having worked closely with the National Sports Authority and Ministry of Sports and Recreation.   Whether or not Joshua attends in a capacity other than a co-promoter remains to be seen, but Hearn told Boxing Social: “We’re going to get him in prime condition for the big one, and that’s all that matters.”   Asked what “the big one” was, Hearn responded: “Tyson Fury.”

Anthony Joshua Planning ‘Serious Investment’ in EFL Club

Anthony Joshua is currently in talks over a potential investment into one EFL Championship club. Joshua has forged huge earnings from his career in heavyweight boxing and is reported to have a net worth of around $83 million. The 35-year-old has been making investments with his boxing fortune, including purchasing property in the London area. And now, headlines materialised that Joshua could be looking to purchase a share in a club he knows well. The Watford-born and bred boxer is looking to invest in the club, further cementing his hero status in his hometown. He told Seconds Out: “We wanted to move into private equity, venture capital funds. “As you earn, naturally you want to save, so rather than me spending recklessly I’m trying to invest money into certain asset classes and that was an opportunity that presented itself. “Nothing’s come of it yet. It’s a serious investment. If it comes off it’s one that should do well. “If they went back to the Premier League then I’d need to get a shop on Market Street because the traffic that would be coming through Watford would be phenomenal. “I remember being on Market Street and watching the football fans. “I’m not a massive football fan myself but watching the fans steamroll Market Street and steamroll Vicarage Road were real good scenes. “If we don’t do it then good luck to them anyway because they’re a great team.” The Hornets finished 14th in the Championship, securing their place in the division comfortably for another year. Since their Premier League relegation at the end of the 2021-2022 season, Watford have spent three seasons in the Championship without securing a return. In the 2022-2023 season, they finished mid-table in 11th place, with Joao Pedro as their leading scorer. The following 2023-2024 campaign saw them drop slightly to 15th, with managerial changes not helping a period of instability at the club. The current 2024-2025 season concluded with them in 14th, with Vakoun Bayo leading their scoring. While they’ve shown some attacking capability, consistent results have eluded them, and they haven’t been in contention for promotion in any of these seasons. Given their lack of Championship play-off action yet again, Watford have since parted ways with manager Tom Cleverley. Joshua’s investment would likely help try to restore the club’s chances of pushing for a place back with the country’s elite.

Anthony Joshua to Undergo Surgery Later This Month

Anthony Joshua has revealed he is set to undergo surgery in a bit to solve an ongoing issue that has delayed his return to the ring. The Brit has been out of action since he lost against Daniel Dubois at Wembley in September 2024, with his future up in the air on the back of the devastating knockout defeat. Fans have been curious as to what his next move is, with no announcements made despite reports he could face long-time rival Tyson Fury as soon as this year. In March, Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, revealed his man was ‘not ready to start camp’ and needed eight more weeks to build up his fitness on the back of a setback on an injury. Joshua had, though, been in training at the time, but it appears he has now suffered yet another setback as he now prepares to go under the knife to finally solve the issue that has been bothering him for a number of months. It remains possible that the former world champion will fight this year, but, speaking to DAZN on Saturday night, he explained why he won’t be in the ring any time soon. ‘When do you want me back, people?’ Joshua asked in the interview. ‘I’m trying to get my body right. I have got to actually have a little surgery on my elbow. ‘A small surgery sometime in May. I’m finalising the details. ‘That will see me out of the gym for maybe six to eight weeks, and then when I’m healed, I will be back.’ Reports of a bout against Fury continue to gather pace, with Fury’s former promoter Frank Warren telling Mail Sport this week: ‘It’ll be about whether Tyson wants to do it, and whether AJ wants to do it. AJ is still active and wants the fight—it’s the one that never happened. Everybody wants to see it.’ Warren had previously suggested a return for a ‘generational ‘Battle of Britain’ fight against Joshua could be on the cards. The two heavyweight stars have regularly traded verbals and been in discussions before, but nothing serious has ever materialised. Joshua, meanwhile, was keen to stay away from the subject when speaking to Mail Sport this week. ‘We’ll save that conversation for another time,’ he joked. ‘I think what we’ll do for the viewers at home is go back over the years and find the same answer for the same question. Same same, nothing changed.’

Tyson Fury announces retirement from boxing

Boxing great Tyson Fury has announced his retirement from the sport following consecutive defeats to unified heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk. Talk of either an Usyk trilogy or a fight against Anthony Joshua surrounded the immediate future of the ‘Gypsy King’, but the 36-year-old has instead opted to retire, putting an end to an iconic career. “Hi everybody, I’m going to make this short and sweet,” said Fury in a video posted to Instagram. “I’d like to announce my retirement from boxing, it’s been a blast. I’ve loved every single minute of it. “I’m going to end with this, Dick Turpin wore a mask. God bless everybody, see you on the other side.” Fury went toe-to-toe with Usyk for the first time in Riyadh in May last year. He suffered his maiden professional defeat via split decision, a victory which granted the Ukrainian undisputed status. Fury sought revenge on his heavyweight counterpart when the pair locked horns in a rematch in December, but Usyk again emerged victorious via unanimous decision. The Englishman was frustrated by the scoring, having felt that he had done enough to win the rematch, saying Usyk received a “bit of a Christmas gift from the judges”. And when pushed to reveal future plans following the Saudi Arabia showdown, Fury was non-committal. “I’m having some time off,” he said. “I might do, I might not. Who knows? We’ll talk about that next year.” The back-to-back defeats saw speculation mount over Fury’s next move, with a fight against fellow Briton Joshua hotly tipped for 2025. Speaking at The Ring Magazine Awards last week, Joshua himself encouraged the bout, saying: “It has to happen this year.” Fury initially announced he would retire in 2022 following victory over Dillian Whyte, but U-turned on the decision, returning to action to defeat Derek Chisora in December that year. He then went on to defeat Francis Ngannou via split decision in October 2023, before taking on the Usyk double-header the following year. Fury’s retirement brings an end to a glittering career in the ring, which saw him claim WBA, IBF, WBO, and IBO heavyweight titles after ending Wladimir Klitschko’s long-standing dominance in the heavyweight division with victory over the Ukrainian in 2015. He would soon go on to vacate the titles as he temporarily stepped away from the sport – and he returned to the ring in 2018 with victory over Sefer Seferi. Among his iconic fights, an epic trilogy with Deontay Wilder stands out. The pair fought out a thrilling draw in 2018, before Fury went on to claim back-to-back knockout victories over the American in 2020 and 2021. Fury retired with an imperious record of 34 victories to just two defeats, both coming against Usyk. The Englishman retires having never suffered defeat via knockout.
