Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke Assures Tax Reform is Fair and Non-Exploitive

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has reassured residents that the newly introduced tax reform policy is not intended to create additional hardship, but rather to promote fairness, equity, and sustainable revenue generation for the state. The governor, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Teslim Igbalaye, made this assurance during a three-day stakeholders’ engagement held on Tuesday at the Centre for Black Culture in Osogbo. The event focused on the implementation of the new tax law in the state. Adeleke emphasized that while taxation remains a key source of revenue for the government, the reforms are designed to ease the financial burden on citizens while improving the efficiency of the tax system. He explained that the primary aim of the reforms is to expand the tax net by ensuring more informal sector operators comply with the system, which would, in turn, increase the funds available for essential social services and infrastructure development. “This retreat is timely and necessary as the new tax Acts are not designed to place undue burden on citizens or businesses. Rather, they are intended to promote fairness, expand the tax net, improve compliance, and strengthen Osun State’s revenue base through transparency, efficiency, and digital innovation,” Adeleke said. The governor also highlighted that the policy framework is people-oriented, pro-business, and investor-friendly, with particular attention given to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that play a pivotal role in driving economic growth and job creation. “Our approach to tax reform is deliberate and people-centered. The new framework recognizes the importance of SMEs and provides a gradual, fair, and supportive pathway for integrating the informal sector into the formal economy,” he stated. Adeleke further pointed out that measures have been put in place to protect low-income earners, including reliefs, exemptions, and reduced tax rates where applicable. “Our goal is balance. We want to grow revenue without harming livelihoods and build compliance without eroding public trust,” he concluded. With the new reforms in place, the state aims to foster a more transparent, inclusive, and efficient tax system while promoting sustainable development and the welfare of its citizens.

Gov Adeleke Slams Calls for Emergency Rule in Osun, Accuses APC of Backdoor Power Grab

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has dismissed recent calls for the declaration of a state of emergency in the state, describing them as a continuation of a failed plot by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to seize power through undemocratic means. The governor was reacting to appeals by some civil society groups for emergency rule following recent political developments in the state. Adeleke, however, described the groups as “faceless” and alleged that the calls were orchestrated by former governor Gboyega Oyetola and the APC’s governorship candidate, Bola Oyebamiji. In a statement issued on Saturday in Osogbo, Adeleke accused the APC of being the major source of unrest in Osun, alleging that the party paralysed local government administration, mismanaged council funds, and illegally deployed security personnel. According to the governor, the former administration and its allies have become “the most hated political actors in Osun” due to their handling of local government affairs. “The APC seized local government funds, mismanaged the same, and forcefully occupied the councils, all in a bid to provoke violence and conflict. This is a deliberate strategy to create chaos and blame it on the Adeleke-led administration,” he said. Adeleke maintained that his government has continued to preserve peace in the state despite what he described as persistent provocation and illegality by APC-aligned actors. He said the call for emergency rule was born out of frustration after their alleged plans failed. “Osun APC has failed in its evil bid to destabilise the state, hence their resort to an open call for emergency declaration, for which there is no basis or justification,” he stated. The governor rejected attempts to blame his administration for the crisis, insisting that the instability stemmed from the illegal occupation of local government councils by APC-backed chairmen whose tenures had expired. He further accused the opposition party of hijacking local government funds in violation of financial regulations, adding that his administration had intervened to pay local government workers who were allegedly abandoned. Adeleke said his handling of the situation has earned commendations from various quarters, stressing that Osun has moved beyond the era of political violence. “No individual or group will be allowed to further disturb the peace of Osun State. Anybody found creating public mayhem will face the full wrath of the law,” he warned. The governor disclosed that he had directed the state Commissioner of Police to closely monitor the situation and prevent any attempt to plunge the state into conflict. He also called on the Inspector-General of Police to take note of developments in the state. Adeleke further appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene by calling former governor Oyetola to order, warning that the actions of the minister could tarnish the image of the Presidency. “Those seeking power should face the electorate. Political power is secured through the people; no backdoor access will work,” he added.

Osun Governor Adeleke Seeks Immediate Release Of ₦130 Billion Withheld From Local Governments

Osun State Governor, Senator Nurudeen Ademola Adeleke, has demanded the immediate release of more than ₦130 billion in statutory allocations allegedly withheld from the state’s local governments, warning that the blockade is crippling grassroots administration and causing hardship for workers and residents. In a statewide broadcast on Monday, addressing the illegal occupation of local government secretariats and the need to defend democratic order, Adeleke said court-sacked All Progressives Congress (APC) chairmen and councillors have occupied council offices across the state for nearly a year, despite Federal High Court, Osogbo, rulings in November 2022 and confirmations by the Court of Appeal in February and June 2025 that nullified their elections. “The court removed them, not my administration,” the governor stressed, noting that fresh local government elections were held in compliance with court directives, leading to the swearing-in of duly elected chairmen and councillors on February 23, 2025. He described the current occupants of the secretariats as imposters acting without lawful authority. Adeleke accused former Governor Gboyega Oyetola of allegedly supporting the illegal occupation with police backing, a move he said undermines democracy and the rule of law. He also alleged that local government workers who attempted to resume duties were harassed and intimidated by armed police and political thugs. The governor highlighted that statutory allocations due to Osun local governments, now totaling about ₦130 billion since February 2025, have not been released to the councils’ official accounts. He said these funds are critical for paying salaries of primary school teachers, nurses, health workers in 332 primary health care centres, council staff, traditional councils, and retirees. He added that the state government has had to make significant financial sacrifices to sustain salaries for nearly a year, describing the situation as unsustainable. “Governance is about humanity, responsibility, and compassion, but this burden cannot continue indefinitely,” Adeleke said. The governor also accused the United Bank for Africa (UBA) of permitting unauthorized access to local government accounts, noting that senior bank officials involved are facing criminal prosecution. He questioned whether such actions would be tolerated in cities like New York or London, where the bank operates. Appealing to the federal government, Adeleke urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to ensure the release of the withheld funds and protect democratic institutions, emphasizing that the President is not involved in the alleged illegality. “There is no provision in our Constitution for tenure elongation,” he said, framing the crisis as a fight between constitutional order and impunity. He called on Nigerians and democracy advocates to demand an immediate end to the occupation of local government secretariats and the release of council funds. The governor also urged residents to remain peaceful and law-abiding, assuring them of his administration’s commitment to upholding the Constitution and safeguarding their welfare.
