Petrol Price Rises To N1,040 Per Litre In Lagos, N1,080 In Abuja

Petrol prices have risen again in parts of Nigeria, with motorists now paying as much as N1,040 per litre in Lagos and up to N1,080 per litre in Abuja. The latest increase followed the decision by Dangote Refinery to raise its ex-gantry price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) to N995 per litre earlier in the week. A survey carried out on Saturday across several filling stations in Lagos and the Federal Capital Territory showed that many outlets had already adjusted their pump prices. At NNPC retail stations located in Ilasa, Apple Junction and Ago Palace Way in Lagos, petrol was being sold at N1,040 per litre. The new rate represents an increase of N47 compared with the former price of N993 per litre. Along the Oshodi/Apapa Expressway, both Emadeb Energy and PM Petroleum also dispensed petrol at N1,040 per litre. In Festac Town, Techno Oil adjusted its pump price to N1,050 per litre, while MRS stations across Lagos sold the product at N1,057 per litre. In Abuja, motorists encountered varying prices at different stations. Gegu Oil Nigeria on Kubwa Expressway sold petrol at N1,050 per litre, while Empire Energy stations offered it at N1,080 per litre. However, an AP filling station in the capital dispensed the product at N959 per litre. The rise in pump prices comes amid heightened tensions in the Middle East, which have driven fluctuations in global crude oil markets. On Friday, the price of crude oil climbed to about $91 per barrel as the conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran continued to intensify across the region.

Bandits Raid Peze Community In Abuja, Kidnap 16 Including Pastor’s Children And Vigilante Commander’s Wife

Heavily armed gunmen carried out a deadly raid on Peze community in the Byazhi area of Kubwa, Bwari Area Council, within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, abducting at least 16 residents. According to Sahara Reporters, the victims include four children of a local pastor, the wife of a vigilante commander, and her younger sister, who had been visiting the family. The attack took place on Tuesday night between 9:30 p.m. and 10 p.m., with the gunmen moving from house to house, attempting to force their way in. One resident said the assailants had assembled in an unfinished building opposite his home before beginning the operation. “They started banging on my door and moving around the house, shouting to see if anyone would react. The way they operate is that once you respond, they break the window to gain entry,” the resident said. He added that the attackers threatened to kill anyone who refused to open their doors. Unable to enter his house, the gunmen moved on to other homes, eventually abducting several people. The pastor’s four children were taken while he was away, leaving only the youngest at home. The vigilante commander’s family was also targeted. He had just left his home when a neighbour warned him of the attack. Unaware that his own house was surrounded, he rushed toward the scene, only to be blocked and fired upon. The gunmen then entered his home, abducting his wife and her visiting sister, leaving behind the woman’s newborn, who was less than 40 days old. The resident noted that the kidnappers even ate the food the woman had been preparing before taking her. Security operatives later arrived, but the assailants had already fled with their captives. The abductors have since contacted the families, demanding ransom for their release.

US Embassy In Abuja Closes Temporarily Over Potential Protests

The United States Mission in Nigeria has announced a temporary closure of its embassy in Abuja due to potential protests in the capital. In a notice posted on its official X account on Thursday, the Mission stated that routine embassy services will be suspended until Monday, March 9, 2026. “Due to the potential for protests in Abuja, the U.S. Embassy will be closed for routine business until Monday, March 9, 2026. Visa appointments originally scheduled for March 4 and 5, as well as American Citizen Services (ACS) appointments scheduled for March 5, have been rescheduled to next week,” the statement read. The embassy advised visa applicants to check their email or AVITs accounts for new appointment dates, while ACS applicants should check their emails. Applicants who do not receive updated appointments are encouraged to use the Visa Navigator platform for assistance. The Mission also asked the public to follow its website and social media for further updates. The closure follows earlier cancellations of visa appointments on March 4 due to security concerns over planned demonstrations in Abuja linked to the ongoing tension with Iran. Authorities had deployed security personnel across Abuja amid fears of protests by the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), after similar demonstrations were reported in Niger, Sokoto, Kaduna, Yobe, Bauchi, Gombe, and Lagos states. The IMN said the planned protests are intended as a peaceful show of solidarity with Iran, following reports of the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in airstrikes allegedly carried out by the U.S. and Israel.

ICPC Raids El-Rufai’s Abuja Residence Amid N423bn Probe

Operatives of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) have raided the Abuja residence of former Kaduna State governor, Nasir el-Rufai, in a fresh twist to the ongoing investigation into alleged financial misconduct. The search, which took place at his Aso Drive home, was confirmed on Thursday by his media aide, Muyiwa Adekeye. Reacting to the development, his lawyer, Ubong Akpan, criticised the operation, arguing that it flouted established legal procedures and breached his client’s fundamental rights. The action comes shortly after el-Rufai was taken into custody by the ICPC on Wednesday night. Before his transfer to the commission, he had reportedly spent two nights in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and was subsequently held by the Department of State Services (DSS). El-Rufai had voluntarily honoured an EFCC invitation on Monday, appearing at its Abuja headquarters over allegations of financial mismanagement during his tenure as Kaduna State governor from 2015 to 2023. The allegations are tied to a 2024 report by the Kaduna State House of Assembly, which accused him of diverting N423 billion in public funds and engaging in money laundering. The assembly had recommended a full-scale investigation by anti-graft agencies. Security operatives had earlier attempted to apprehend him at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja following his arrival from Cairo. El-Rufai later alleged that the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, instructed the ICPC to involve the DSS in his arrest. In a televised interview, he claimed to have listened to a telephone conversation in which the National Security Adviser allegedly ordered his arrest, maintaining that the communication was intercepted. The DSS has since filed a three-count charge against the former governor, accusing him of unlawfully intercepting a telephone conversation involving the National Security Adviser.

Tinubu Returns to Abuja After Abu Dhabi Trip

President Bola Tinubu has arrived back in Abuja after attending the 2026 Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, where Nigeria and the United Arab Emirates concluded a major trade agreement aimed at strengthening economic ties between both countries. The President’s return was confirmed on Saturday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who issued a statement on the completion of the trip. Tinubu had left Nigeria on December 28, 2025, travelling to Paris to complete the remaining part of his annual leave before heading to Abu Dhabi for the summit, which took place from January 11 to 15. The President also attended the same global gathering in 2025. While in Abu Dhabi, Nigeria and the UAE signed a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement designed to expand bilateral trade and investment. The agreement allows duty-free entry for thousands of Nigerian products into the UAE market and is expected to deepen cooperation in areas such as energy, infrastructure, agriculture, mining, renewable energy, and technology transfer. The agreement was signed on Nigeria’s behalf by the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr Jumoke Oduwole, while UAE Minister of State for Foreign Trade, Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, signed for the Emirates. President Tinubu and UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan witnessed the signing. Speaking after the ceremony, Oduwole said the deal would open new global market opportunities for Nigerian exporters. She explained that Nigerian businesses would be able to establish offices and subsidiaries in the UAE, with business owners permitted to stay in the country for up to 90 days within a 12-month period. During his address at the summit, Tinubu announced that Nigeria plans to mobilise up to $30bn annually in climate and green industrial financing to support energy transition reforms and expand electricity access nationwide. He revealed that the Climate Investment Platform is targeting $500m for climate-resilient infrastructure, while the National Climate Change Fund is seeking a $2bn capital base. The President also disclosed plans to host a joint Nigeria-UAE Investopia summit in Lagos in February, expected to attract investors, policymakers, innovators, and business leaders to explore investment opportunities in Nigeria. Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week is an annual global initiative organised by the UAE to promote dialogue on sustainability, climate action, and energy transition. The 2026 edition, themed “The Nexus of Next: All Systems Go,” focused on coordinated efforts across finance, technology, energy, and human capital to drive sustainable development.

The protests caused disruptions in Enugu, highlighting the scale of the nationwide mobilisation.
