BREAKING: DSS Arraigns Ex-AGF Abubakar Malami, Son Over Terrorism Financing Allegations

The Department of State Services (DSS) has arraigned former Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, and his son before the Federal High Court in Abuja over allegations bordering on terrorism financing. The duo appeared before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik on a five-count charge, where they both pleaded not guilty to all allegations. According to the DSS, Malami allegedly aided and abetted the financing of terrorism by failing, during his tenure as AGF, to initiate prosecution against suspected terrorism financiers whose case files were reportedly submitted to his office. The agency further accused Malami and his son of engaging in preparatory acts linked to terrorism, including the unlawful possession of prohibited firearms and ammunition without the required licence. Items listed in the charge include a Sturm Magnum 17-0101 firearm, 16 live Redstar AAA 5.20 cartridges, and 27 expended cartridges of the same brand. The court was also informed that Malami had previously been arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in connection with separate allegations of fraud and money laundering. Justice Abdulmalik adjourned the case to a later date for further proceedings.

Ex-AGF Abubakar Malami Re-Arrested by DSS Despite Fulfilling Bail Conditions

Former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, has been taken into custody by the Department of State Services (DSS) shortly after leaving Kuje Prison, where he had fulfilled his bail conditions. Sources say Malami is now the subject of a fresh investigation by the DSS. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) reportedly discovered firearms at his Kebbi residence during a recent search. Malami had earlier warned of a potential plot by the DSS to re-arrest him while he was still at the correctional facility. On Wednesday, a Federal High Court had granted bail to him, his wife, and his son, each set at ₦500 million with two sureties. In a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Media, Mohammed Bello Doka, Malami alleged that the DSS had been conducting surveillance at Kuje Prison with the intention of re-arresting him. Despite meeting all bail requirements, the former AGF was reportedly taken into DSS custody.

Former AGF Abubakar Malami Declares 2027 Kebbi Governorship Bid

Former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, has officially declared his intention to run for governor of Kebbi State in the 2027 election, promising to tackle insecurity and revive the state’s struggling agricultural sector. Malami made the announcement during an interview with DCL Hausa on Monday, where he expressed confidence in the strength of his political backing across Kebbi State. “INEC guidelines don’t permit mobilisation yet, but when the time comes, you will see that the people of Kebbi are with us. I have agreed to contest, and there is no retreat. God willing, we are going to win. We won’t disappoint those who believe in us,” he said. Criticizing the ruling All Progressives Congress, Malami accused the party of worsening conditions in the North and leaving farmers vulnerable to insecurity. He lamented that bandit attacks have forced many farmers off their land, severely affecting food production. “Today, rice mills that operated for two decades have shut down because of bad policies that favour foreign companies,” he said, blaming both state and federal authorities for “negligence and policy failure.” Malami said his governorship ambition is driven by a desire to “salvage Kebbi State,” restore security, rebuild the agricultural sector, and protect the welfare of residents. He insisted that his campaign is “not for personal gain but a rescue mission.”
