Senate Swears In Joseph Ikpea And Emmanuel Nwachukwu As New Lawmakers
The Senate has sworn in Joseph Ikpea and Emmanuel Nwachukwu as representatives of Edo Central and Anambra South senatorial districts, respectively.
The swearing-in, which took place during Wednesday’s plenary, was presided over by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, with the Clerk of the Senate, Emmanuel Ojo, administering the oaths of office and allegiance.
Both lawmakers emerged victorious in recent by-elections conducted to fill vacant seats — one left by Monday Okpebholo, who is now the Governor of Edo State, and the other by the late Ifeanyi Ubah, who died in July 2024.
Before the event, the Senate temporarily suspended its rules to allow family members and invited dignitaries to witness the ceremony.
Among those present were former Delta State Governor James Ibori, former Edo State Deputy Governor and current Director General of the Nigerian Institute of Sports Philip Shaibu, and other notable political figures.
Akpabio congratulated the new senators and urged them to familiarize themselves with the Senate’s standing orders and discharge their duties with dedication.
With their induction, the Nigerian Senate now has a complete membership of 109 senators.
