Professor Hakeem Fawehinmi Named Vice Chancellor of Yakubu Gowon University

The University of Abuja, now renamed Yakubu Gowon University, has appointed Professor Hakeem Fawehinmi as its substantive Vice Chancellor.

The announcement was made during the 80th Extraordinary Meeting of the university’s Governing Council on Friday, according to Dr. Habib Yakoob, the acting Head of Information.

“The appointment takes effect from Tuesday, 10 February 2026, and will run for a non-renewable term of five years,” Dr. Yakoob stated.

Professor Fawehinmi, who is currently serving as Vice Chancellor of the Nigerian British University, assumes leadership after months of the university being overseen by acting vice chancellors. His appointment follows controversies surrounding the tenure of the former Vice Chancellor, Professor Aisha Maikudi.
