Switzerland Freezes Assets Of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro And Close Allies

Switzerland has frozen all financial assets in the country belonging to Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, extending the measure to include his closest associates, the Swiss government announced on Monday. The authorities said the move is designed to prevent the transfer or withdrawal of these funds from Switzerland. They also noted that if the assets are found to have been acquired through illegal activities, the money will be used to benefit the people of Venezuela. The Swiss Foreign Ministry in Bern has not provided details on whether Maduro currently holds assets in Switzerland, nor have they disclosed the potential value of any frozen funds.

Wike Tells APC National Secretary To Stay Out Of Rivers State Politics, Warns Against Reckless Comments

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has cautioned the National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ajibola Basiru, to avoid interfering in Rivers State politics and to be careful with his public statements. Wike issued the warning during a “thank-you” visit to Oyigbo Local Government Area, alleging that the APC had received part of the N600 billion left in the state’s coffers. The minister’s remarks followed claims by the APC Vice Chairman (South-South), who reportedly referred to Governor Siminalayi Fubara as “the so-called Governor” during a visit to Khana/Gokana Local Government Area and suggested Fubara could not win a second term without Wike’s influence. Reacting to the comment, Basiru called it “unfortunate” and stressed that Fubara’s position as governor deserved respect, regardless of political differences. “The office of the governor is an exalted position, and whoever occupies it must be respected,” Basiru said in a Facebook post on Sunday. In response, Wike warned that Rivers State is a “no-go area” for political meddling. He advised Basiru to learn from others who had previously tried to interfere in the state’s affairs and cautioned against making careless statements. “Let me warn those who come to Rivers State. You know about our N600 billion, yet you come here, take, and speak recklessly. Take this message to your National Secretary: leave Rivers State alone. Go and learn from those who tried before. Don’t take our support for Mr. President for granted. Be careful with your words,” Wike said. He added, “If your hand burns, don’t blame me. This state is a no-go area. Take the one you have taken and stop making unnecessary comments.” Meanwhile, Renewed Hope Ambassador for Rivers State, Desmond Akawor, expressed concern over stalled development in Oyigbo since Fubara assumed office. He urged that the area receive its fair share of the N600 billion left in the state account. “We elected Governor Fubara expecting meaningful development in Oyigbo, but progress has stalled. The only tangible benefit we’ve received is a commissioner slot, which was given to me. Beyond that, nothing substantial has reached our people,” Akawor said. He added, “Oyigbo must not be excluded from the N600 billion allocations. If N40 billion is distributed across groups, Oyigbo must get its fair share. We are asking for fairness, not favors.”

Court Denies Bail To Bauchi Finance Commissioner In $9.7 Million Terrorism Financing Case

The Federal High Court in Abuja has rejected the bail application of Bauchi State Commissioner for Finance, Yakubu Adamu, and his co-defendants, who face allegations of financing terrorism totaling $9.7 million. Justice Emeka Nwite, in a ruling on Monday, said the charges posed a serious threat to national security and public safety. He noted that terrorism-related offenses undermine social order, and granting bail before trial could endanger the public. While acknowledging the constitutional presumption of innocence under Section 36(5), the judge emphasized that the provision is “not absolute” and that factors such as the nature of the offense, available evidence, and potential severity of punishment must guide bail decisions. “I have carefully considered the affidavit evidence, the statements of prosecution witnesses, including Dan Lawan Abdulmumuni, and the grave threat this case poses to national security and public safety. The prosecution has successfully raised a reasonable presumption of criminal responsibility,” Justice Nwite said. “In view of these factors, the bail application is refused, and the case will proceed on an accelerated schedule.” The trial was adjourned to January 13 for commencement. Adamu and his co-defendants — Balarabe Abdullahi Ilelah, Aminu Mohammed Bose, and Kabiru Yahaya Mohammed — were remanded in Kuje Correctional Centre after their arraignment on a 10-count charge by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on December 31, 2025. All the accused pleaded not guilty. The charges allege that between January and May 2024, the defendants conspired to provide $2,300,000 to Bello Bodejo and his associates, purportedly with approvals from Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed. Two other accused in the case, former Bauchi Accountant-General Sirajo Jaja and Samaila Irmiya Liman, remain at large. In a separate money-laundering case, Adamu was recently granted bail of N500 million with two sureties of the same amount. The court ordered that the sureties be verified landowners in Abuja’s Maitama, Asokoro, or Gwarimpa districts.

Morocco 2025: Super Eagles in Ferocious Charge for 18th AFCON Quarter-Final Berth

Nigeria are confident of reaching the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations for the 18th time when they engage Mozambique in tonight’s Round of 16 tie at the Complexe Sportif de Fès. The Super Eagles have the record of most medals in the 69-year-old flagship football tournament of the African continent, viz three triumphs (gold medals), five runner-up positions (silver medals) and eight bronze acquisitions. The only three times they failed to reach the quarter-finals were at their debut in Ghana in 1963, at the 13th edition in Libya in 1982, and in Cameroon four years ago. Ghana 2008 was the only time they crashed out at the quarter-final stage. Otherwise, every time they had gone past the first knockout round, they had picked up a medal. Monday’s encounter against history-making Mambas (they have reached the knockout stage for the first time ever) promises a thrilling contest with Coaches Eric Chelle and Chiquinho Conde preferring to keep tactics, strategies and patterns to their chests. Nigeria swept to three wins out of three, eight goals for and four against, and reflected a formidable set-up in the group phase, which earned Coach Chelle the mantle of Coach of the Group Phase. However, against third-placed Mozambique, the three-time champions must be extra-cautious, as a similar third-placed Tunisia bumped them in the same stage in Garoua four years ago. The Mambas, who famously defeated the Panthers of Gabon either side of defeats to Cup-holders Cote d’Ivoire and five-time champions Cameroon in Group F, look like a team capable of upturning apple carts that are not properly positioned. Conde can bank on defenders Nené, Bruno Langa and Reinildo Mandava to hold the rear tight, and midfielders Domingues (team captain) and João Bonde to feed the foreline of Chamito and Faisal Bangal, and try to catch Nigeria pants down. Yet, Chelle, who is driven by his own admission of having imbibed the truism that “Nigerians want their team to win every game,” is committed to putting out a structure that will see the Eagles defend with resolution and attack with panache. Forward Victor Osimhen, on 32 goals in 49 matches for country, is expected to lead the onslaughts once more. Captain Wilfred Ndidi and midfielders Alex Iwobi are sure to return after taking a rest for the clash with Uganda, as will centre-back Semi Ajayi, wing-back Bright Osayi-Samuel and forward Ademola Lookman. Coach Chelle, in admitting that the Eagles must forget the excellent job done in the group stage and get into knockout-phase mode in order to avoid a sucker punch, said: “We will not get ahead of ourselves and think we are the best. We will continue to work hard and stay focused for every match as it comes.” Immediate past African Player of the Year, Ademola Lookman, who has scored twice and provided two assists so far in the tournament, spoke of his selection in the group phase’s Best IX: “Yeah, we had a great run in the group stage and I am thankful to all that voted. The selection is not just for me, but my entire team-mates, because their efforts on the pitch contributed to my selection. “However, this is not the vision for our team. We have set targets to accomplish here in Morocco and we are nowhere near our targets yet.” The Confederation of African Football has selected Cameroonian official Abdou Abdel Mefir as referee for Monday night’s encounter, with his compatriots Elvis Noupoue and Carine Atezambong as assistants.

Uganda Bans Live Coverage Of Violence As Election Tensions Rise

Uganda has announced a ban on the live broadcast of riots, unlawful processions, and violent incidents as the country prepares for its upcoming election, the Ministry of Information, Communication and Technology said on Monday. The ministry warned that “live broadcast or streaming of riots, unlawful processions, or violent incidents is prohibited, as it can escalate tension and spread panic.” It also barred the circulation of content considered “inciting, hateful or violent.” The restrictions come amid heightened tensions ahead of the January 15 vote, where President Yoweri Museveni, seeking to extend his 40-year rule, faces opposition from 43-year-old pop-star-turned-politician Bobi Wine. Security forces have already detained hundreds of opposition supporters in recent weeks. Uganda’s last election in 2021 saw violent crackdowns that left over 50 people dead. Museveni, who came to power in 1986 after a five-year rebellion, has long been accused by critics and human rights groups of using security forces to intimidate and repress opponents, allegations he denies. Amnesty International said Monday that security forces have conducted a “brutal campaign of repression against Wine’s supporters in the run-up to the election, subjecting them to arbitrary arrests, beatings and torture.” Government and police spokespeople were not immediately available for comment. Meanwhile, another opposition figure, Kizza Besigye, remains imprisoned more than a year after being arrested on treason charges, which he has denied.

Rivers State Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu Defects From PDP To APC

Rivers State Deputy Governor, Professor Ngozi Odu, has officially joined the All Progressives Congress (APC), leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) just over a month after Governor Siminalayi Fubara and most state and federal lawmakers from the state defected. Odu completed her APC registration on Sunday at Akabuka, Ward 8, Unit 11 in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area and subsequently toured all six zones of the LGA to raise awareness about the party’s ongoing e-registration exercise. The development was confirmed in a statement on Monday by Owupele Benebo, Head of Press, Office of the Deputy Governor. Addressing stakeholders, Odu explained that her move aligns with the recent shift by Governor Fubara and urged residents to register with the APC in support of both the President and the governor. “The aim is to further strengthen the support base of President Bola Tinubu and Governor Siminalayi Fubara,” she said. “During our tour, large crowds welcomed us, saying they would follow wherever I go, and wherever Governor Fubara and President Tinubu go. I have visited all six zones — Egi, Omoku, Osomini, Igburu, Egbema, and Ndoni — and the reception has been overwhelming.” Odu described the defection as a significant boost to the APC’s presence in the LGA and an indication of growing grassroots support for the party leadership. The statement also noted that hundreds of Labour Party members in Ndoni joined the APC during her tour, expressing excitement about their new political alignment.

NNPCL Cuts Petrol Price Again To N815 Per Liter

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has reduced the price of premium motor spirit (PMS) once again. On Monday morning, a DAILY POST correspondent observed that NNPCL retail stations in Abuja are now selling petrol at N815 per liter, down from the previous N835, representing a N20 drop. The new price has been implemented across NNPCL outlets in Wuse Zones 4 and 6, along Keffi‑Abuja Road, and on Kubwa Expressway. An attendant at one of the stations, who preferred to remain anonymous, confirmed that the reduction took effect on Sunday evening. However, NNPCL’s current price is still N79 higher than the N739 per liter being offered at MRS filling stations backed by Dangote Refinery nationwide. This latest cut follows a previous N80 reduction by NNPCL on December 19, 2025, when petrol was sold at N835 per liter, amid a pricing competition triggered by Dangote Refinery’s N699 gantry price.

Lizzy Anjorin Blames Anthony Joshua’s Mother Over Fatal Nigerian Car Crash

Nollywood actress Lizzy Anjorin has criticized Anthony Joshua’s mother over the tragic car accident that nearly claimed the boxer’s life during his visit to Nigeria. In a video, Anjorin questioned the decision to allow the 36-year-old heavyweight champion to travel to his hometown for the festivities, suggesting it exposed him to unnecessary danger. She argued that Joshua should have stayed in safer areas such as Lekki or Ikoyi. “Anthony Joshua’s mother is to blame. She didn’t put her son in a better place like Lekki or Ikoyi, she watched him go back to his village for the festivities. What reasonable mother would watch her son go back to that kind of place? Why couldn’t she put him somewhere like Ikoyi or Banana Island?” she said. The accident, which took place in Ogun State, tragically claimed the lives of two of Joshua’s close friends. “Anthony Joshua’s mother is at fault, she watched him go back to his village for the festivities not somewhere like Ikoyi or banana island. What reasonable mother would do that?” 🤦🏽‍♂️🙆🏿‍♂️ -Lizzy Anjorin comes for Anthony Joshua mother pic.twitter.com/1wV0mzZ1mx — HO🅿️E (@hopefortv) January 4, 2026
