China Hosts Leaders of Russia, North Korea, and Iran for Military Parade in Open Challenge to Western Order

BEIJING – September 2, 2025 — In a powerful display of geopolitical alignment and military strength, Chinese President Xi Jinping is hosting the leaders of Russia, North Korea, and Iran in Beijing this week for a major military parade—marking the first time all four leaders are gathered publicly at the same global event. The gathering, timed with the 80th anniversary of Japan’s surrender in World War II, underscores China’s push to reshape the global order and project itself as a credible alternative to Western dominance. The event follows a multi-day summit in Tianjin with over two dozen leaders, including members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). Xi used the platform to promote an image of China as a stabilizing force amid global uncertainty—contrasting sharply with the U.S., which under President Donald Trump is realigning its foreign policies, raising tariffs, and straining global alliances. At the heart of Xi’s message: the era of Western-led world order is ending. The high-profile military parade on Beijing’s Avenue of Eternal Peace will showcase hypersonic weapons, nuclear-capable missiles, undersea drones, and thousands of PLA troops, delivering a not-so-subtle message to global rivals. Appearing alongside Xi will be Russian President Vladimir Putin, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian Together, they represent what Western analysts increasingly refer to as an “axis of upheaval” — nations aligned in their opposition to U.S. influence and values. The optics come at a sensitive time, as the U.S. faces diplomatic headwinds, growing global discontent over its trade policies, and waning trust among some allies. Though China has avoided overt military support for Russia’s war in Ukraine, Xi’s embrace of Putin signals a deliberate defiance of Western pressure. Meanwhile, North Korea has reportedly sent troops to aid Russian forces, and Iran continues supplying weapons to Moscow — raising alarm in Washington. “This is a rare, symbolic moment of quadrilateral alignment,” said Brian Hart of the Center for Strategic and International Studies. “It shows how China is willing to publicly elevate these partnerships, despite the reputational risks.” Experts say the coordinated appearances send a clear signal: China is no longer just rising — it has arrived, and it’s rewriting the rules. “Xi is unapologetically promoting an international system where U.S. leadership is no longer a given,” said Tong Zhao of the Carnegie Endowment. “He’s capitalizing on global fractures to position China as a viable alternative.” Even traditionally non-aligned leaders, like India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, appeared to embrace the moment. Modi was seen warmly interacting with Xi and Putin, just weeks after the U.S. slapped India with harsh tariffs over Russian oil imports. As tensions escalate and alliances shift, Beijing’s parade isn’t just a military event—it’s a statement of intent: the world order is changing, and China plans to lead the charge.

Finnish Court Approves Simon Ekpa’s Extradition to Nigeria in July

Simon Ekpa Bags Six-Year Jail Term in Finland

Nigerian separatist leader Simon Ekpa has been sentenced to six years in prison by a Finnish court for terrorism, tax fraud and an ethical violation. Ekpa, who lives in Finland, heads the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) group, which has been allegedly responsible for killings and abductions of hundreds of people in Nigeria’s south-eastern region. The Finnish court said on Monday that Ekpa was sentenced to prison for participating in the activities of a terrorist group, public incitement to commit a crime for terrorist purposes, aggravated tax fraud and violating the provisions of the Lawyers Act. The court said he pushed for the independence of a separatist region in Nigeria through “illegal means” and “equipped the groups with weapons, explosives, and ammunition through his contact network.” In 2024, the Nigerian military declared Ekpa wanted as part of nearly 100 people sought on charges of terrorism. After his arrest in Finland, the Nigerian government sought his extradition. For years, IPOB has sought to reignite a failed secession push by former Biafra. Biafra was a short-lived country that comprised Nigeria’s south-eastern states, including future oil-producing areas. The Nigerian military government rejected the secession, which led to a civil war between 1967 and 1970, in which at least 3 million people died. The group was banned in Nigeria in 2017. Ekpa took over from Nnamdi Kanu, the group’s founder who was arrested by Interpol in a sting operation in 2021 in Kenya and extradited to Nigeria. Kanu has since been in prison, with his trial still ongoing. In response to Kanu’s arrest, the group forbade any commercial activity every Monday in the region, a disruption that has been ongoing since 2021. The “sit-at-home” protests led to 700 deaths, according to a count by SBM Intelligence, a Lagos-based geopolitical risk advisory, and cost the Nigerian economy 7.6 trillion naira (€4.09 billion).

CSO Demands Arrest and Prosecution of Osun Speaker Over Alleged Death Threat to Monarch

OSOGBO, OSUN STATE – September 2, 2025 — A civil society group, the Osun Youth Initiative for Good Governance (OYIGG), has called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Olumide Egbedun, over allegations of issuing a death threat to a traditional ruler. In a statement signed by its National Convener, Dr. Akande Adeyemi, the group urged the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and the Department of State Services (DSS) to thoroughly investigate a leaked audio recording in which a voice, alleged to be Egbedun’s, is heard threatening the Alasi of Asi, Oba Oyewale Olasunkanmi. The speaker allegedly warned the monarch in Yoruba that if he resisted political influence, he could be jailed and “might not come out alive.” The monarch officially petitioned authorities on July 29, after the audio clip went viral on July 23. Describing the Speaker’s alleged comments as “rascality of the highest order,” the OYIGG accused Egbedun of a pattern of disrespect toward traditional institutions, citing previous incidents involving: Dr. Adeyemi emphasized that “no one is above the law,” adding that the alleged threat is not just an insult to a royal father but a direct affront to democratic and cultural values in Osun State. He further warned that “power is transient” and any attempt to shield the Speaker would damage both his image and the integrity of the institutions he represents. The group has also called on the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, and the Osun State Council of Obas to ensure the matter is not swept under the carpet. In addition to legal action, the OYIGG is demanding Egbedun’s immediate impeachment, urging the state government to resist any political pressure to protect him. Efforts to reach the Speaker’s Chief Press Secretary, Olamide Tiamiyu, for comments have been unsuccessful as calls and text messages over the last 48 hours went unanswered.

Judge rules Trump’s use of US National Guard in Los Angeles illegal

Federal Judge Rules Trump’s Deployment of National Guard in Los Angeles Was Illegal

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA — September 2, 2025 — A federal judge has ruled that former President Donald Trump’s deployment of the National Guard to Los Angeles in response to immigration protests earlier this year was unlawful, citing a violation of the Posse Comitatus Act, which bars the use of military forces for domestic law enforcement. The ruling comes amid ongoing national unrest, with more than 1,000 Labor Day rallies held across the U.S. protesting Trump’s immigration policies and federal actions. In Los Angeles, tensions remain high following the June deployment, which took place despite opposition from local city leaders. The judge’s decision adds to a growing list of legal and political challenges facing the Trump administration. Meanwhile, in Washington, D.C., protesters gathered as Congress returned from its summer recess. Internationally, the World Trade Organization has also raised alarms, warning that Trump’s aggressive tariff strategy could cause “unprecedented” disruptions to the global trading system.

This season, Oshoala’s role diminished, with just five starts in 12 matches and no goals or assists before her departure.
