We just left to save our lives.” Alhaji Shehu, another local, described the harsh conditions faced by those displaced, saying they now live with relatives or in makeshift tents in open fields, exposed to severe weather. “We depend on handouts, and sometimes we go hungry when there is no help,” he said. The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced the start of sales for application forms for the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and Direct Entry (DE) admissions for the 2026/2027 academic session. The announcement was made in a statement signed by the Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, and shared on JAMB’s official X account on Tuesday night. JAMB stated, “Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for admission into tertiary institutions in Nigeria for the 2026/27 academic session.” Eligibility for the UTME is generally restricted to candidates who will be at least 16 years old by September 30, 2026. However, underage applicants may be considered under strict conditions. The Board explained, “Candidates less than 16 years old by 30th September, 2026 will have to undergo an intensive evaluation to determine their eligibility for a waiver. Such candidates must have scored not less than 80% in each of UTME/ALEVEL, PUTME, SSCE and in the exceptional candidate assessment.” UTME results for underage candidates will be released only after the full evaluation process. JAMB set the registration timelines for UTME candidates, including those from abroad, from Monday, January 26, 2026, to Saturday, February 28, 2026. E-PIN vending for UTME begins Monday, January 19, 2026, and ends Thursday, February 26, 2026, while registration closes on February 28. For Direct Entry candidates, sale of 2026 DE application forms and E-PIN vending will run from Monday, March 2, 2026, to Saturday, April 25, 2026, available only at JAMB State and Zonal Offices. JAMB also announced three categories of e-PINs: Direct Entry (N5,700), UTME without Mock (N7,200), and UTME with Mock (N8,700). The fee breakdown includes: UTME/DE application fee N3,500; reading text N1,000; CBT centre registration N700; CBT centre UTME service N1,500; bank charges N500; and CBT mock UTME centre charge N1,500. The 2026 UTME exam is scheduled to begin Thursday, April 16, 2026, and end Saturday, April 25, 2026. The optional Mock-UTME will hold on Saturday, March 28, 2026.

Under the CEPA, key Nigerian agricultural and industrial exports — including fish, seafood, cereals, oilseeds, cotton, pharmaceuticals, and chemicals — will immediately enter the UAE market duty-free. Over the next three to five years, tariffs on additional products such as machinery, vehicles, electrical equipment, apparel, and furniture will be gradually phased out. The agreement also allows Nigerian businesses to establish corporate entities, subsidiaries, or branches in the UAE. Nigerian business visitors can stay in the country for up to 90 days per year to explore trade and investment opportunities, while intra-company transfers for managers, executives, and specialists will be permitted for renewable three-year terms. In addition, the CEPA addresses longstanding barriers to foreign direct investment, providing greater clarity and legal protection for UAE investors seeking opportunities in Nigeria’s productive sectors, paving the way for stronger economic cooperation between the two nations.

DSS Confirms Death Of Calista Ifedi In Custody At Wawa Barracks

The Department of State Services (DSS) has confirmed that Mrs. Calista Ifedi, who was detained by the agency in November 2021, died while in custody at Wawa Barracks in Niger State. The confirmation came after more than two years of silence from the DSS, during which her family and human rights organisations repeatedly demanded information about her whereabouts. Former presidential candidate and human rights activist Omoyele Sowore disclosed the development on Monday evening, describing it as a disturbing example of impunity within the security agency during the leadership of Yusuf Bichi under the Muhammadu Buhari administration. “Mrs. Calista Ifedi died at Wawa Barracks two years ago under unlawful detention by the lawless Department of State Services (DSS). I share this painful account to bear witness to a grave injustice and to expose the burden of impunity inflicted on Nigerians by the DSS.” Mrs. Ifedi, a small-scale restaurant owner in Enugu, was arrested alongside her husband, Sunday Ifedi, at their home on November 23, 2021. According to Sunday Ifedi, their arrest was arbitrary and no formal charges were ever filed against them. He remained in detention until his release in December 2025. Rights advocates, including Amnesty International Nigeria and lawyer Deji Adeyanju, have consistently maintained that her only alleged offence was that members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) patronised her food business. Following her arrest, she was taken into DSS custody and disappeared from public view for months. Sowore alleged that her health deteriorated while she was held at Wawa Barracks and that she was denied medical attention. “While in detention at Wawa Barracks, Mrs. Ifedi fell ill. Instead of receiving medical care, her repeated complaints were ignored. She was allegedly taunted and left to deteriorate until she died.” Sunday Ifedi said the last time he saw his wife was in March 2022, when they were transferred from the DSS headquarters to Wawa Barracks and separated. He was never officially informed of her death and only learned about it after Sowore personally contacted him. “Her husband was never informed of her death. Tonight, I personally called him to convey this devastating news before making it public.” Calling for accountability, Sowore said, “These are egregious crimes. Nigeria must immediately shut down the Wawa Barracks detention facility. Every official involved in the unlawful detention, neglect, and death of Mrs. Calista Ifedi must be identified, arrested, and prosecuted.” He further accused the DSS of operating with impunity, alleging that its leadership at the time acted with legal backing from former Attorney General Abubakar Malami, SAN. “This tragedy occurred during the period when Yusuf Bichi presided over the DSS with unchecked brutality, aided and protected by Abubakar Malami, SAN, under the criminal Muhammadu Buhari regime. History must not forget, and justice must not be denied.” Sowore also demanded transparency, insisting that Mrs. Ifedi’s remains be produced and independently examined. “Mrs. Calista Ifedi deserved life, dignity, and justice. Nigeria must produce her dead body, and an autopsy must be carried out to determine the circumstances of her death.”
