Presidency Awaits Court Verdict on Minister Uche Nnaji’s Alleged UNN Certificate Forgery

Abuja, Oct. 7, 2025 — The Presidency has said it will take action only after the court delivers its verdict on the alleged certificate forgery case involving the Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, Uche Nnaji. The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, disclosed this while addressing inquiries about the controversy surrounding the minister’s alleged forged degree certificate from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN). Onanuga stated that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will respect the judicial process and refrain from making any comments on the matter while it remains before the court. “This matter is already in court. We should await the verdict of the court,” Onanuga told Leadership Newspaper. The presidential aide’s remarks come amid growing pressure on Nnaji to resign pending the outcome of the case, which has generated significant public and political attention. Minister Speaks on His UNN Certificate In a recent statement, Uche Nnaji addressed the allegations, saying he had not yet collected his degree certificate from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. His explanation, however, has further fuelled controversy, with critics arguing that the minister’s acknowledgment implies that the certificate he presented to the Senate during his ministerial screening may have been fake or forged. The University of Nigeria has reportedly denied issuing the said degree certificate, stating, “UNN never issued a degree certificate to him.” As the case proceeds in court, the federal government maintains that it will withhold any decision or disciplinary action until a judicial determination is made.

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan Returns To Senate After Serving Six-Month Suspension

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan Returns To Senate After Serving Six-Month Suspension

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, is set to return to the Senate chambers today (Tuesday) after completing her six-month suspension. Her lawyer, Victor Giwa, confirmed her resumption in an interview with The Punch, assuring that the lawmaker would join her colleagues for plenary sessions as the National Assembly reconvenes. The Senate had earlier shifted its resumption date from September 23 to October 7, 2025, extending its annual recess and delaying debates on several key national issues. Giwa warned the Senate against any attempt to block Akpoti-Uduaghan’s return, stressing that she had served her full suspension and was constitutionally entitled to resume her duties. “To me, our client should just go straight and resume on Tuesday. Anything else they say is just an opinion. As Femi Falana said, the Senate cannot become an institution that legalises illegality,” he said. He added that preventing her from resuming would amount to contradicting the Senate’s own decision and could lead to “total chaos” within the National Assembly. “She has served out the six months, so whatever is before the court now only concerns whether the suspension in March was lawful. It has nothing to do with her return. Denying her resumption would mean defying your own resolution and creating confusion in the legislature,” Giwa stated. Two weeks ago, Akpoti-Uduaghan described Senate President Godswill Akpabio as a “dictator” after she was allowed access to her office following the completion of her suspension. Her office, located in Suite 2.05 of the Senate Wing, was unsealed by the Deputy Director of the National Assembly Sergeant-at-Arms, Alabi Adedeji, marking her official reinstatement ahead of today’s plenary.

Lagos Sextortion Network Linked to Death of 16-Year-Old American Teen, Evan Boettler

A sextortion network traced to Lagos, Nigeria, has been linked to the tragic death of 16-year-old American schoolboy Evan Boettler, who took his own life just 90 minutes after receiving a blackmail message on Snapchat from someone posing as a teenage girl. Evan, from Missouri, had been communicating with a Snapchat account under the name “JennyTee60,” according to a BBC investigation. The account reportedly persuaded him to share explicit images before ruthlessly blackmailing him. One of the messages sent to the teenager read: “I have your nudes and everything needed to ruin your life.” His devastated parents, Kari and Brad Boettler, described Evan as a “bright, funny” young man who loved fishing, hunting, and sports. “When they finally told us that night that he was gone, it didn’t make any sense. I don’t understand how this could happen to our family,” Kari said. Brad added: “It wasn’t hard to parent him because he was such a good human.” Investigators later traced the Snapchat account’s login to an IP address in Lagos, Nigeria, leading to the discovery of an online underworld of cybercriminals locally known as “Yahoo Boys.” These networks, dubbed “Hustle Kingdoms,” consist of rooms of young men who run sextortion and romance scams targeting victims across the globe. One scammer, identified only as Ola, explained how the operation works: “You open a female account using fake names from fake generators. It’s a site where you get names of people from the country that you want.” When asked if he felt guilty, Ola said: “I don’t feel bad because I need the money.” He added that young boys in Western countries are frequent targets because “their sex drive is so high, and they’re scared of their pictures being released to their class groups, parents, and friends.” The investigation revealed that some of these criminal groups now employ “cyber-spiritualists” who perform rituals purportedly to protect them from being caught or to make victims more vulnerable to manipulation. According to the FBI, reports of sextortion have surged in recent years, with over 55,000 cases recorded in the United States in 2024 alone. The UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) also receives around 110 sextortion reports every month. In response, major social media companies have pledged stronger action. Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, said: “We have around 40,000 people working on safety and security globally, with over $30bn invested in this area over the last decade. We automatically place teens in the strictest message settings and alert them when they’re chatting with someone who may be in a different country.” Snapchat similarly stated: “We have zero tolerance for sextortion on Snapchat. If we discover this activity, we take quick action to remove the account and support law enforcement efforts to bring offenders to justice.” However, the probe into Evan’s death reportedly stalled after Nigerian telecom provider GloWorld failed to retain data linked to the IP address used by the scammer. Nearly two years later, Evan’s parents remain heartbroken but determined to seek justice. “When they finally told us that night that he was gone, it didn’t make any sense,” Kari repeated. “I don’t understand how this could happen to our family.” Evan’s death continues to underscore the growing global threat of online sextortion and the urgent need for stronger international cooperation to identify and prosecute cybercriminals.

Kwara Government Denies Bandit Siege in Nine LGAs, Faults Peter Obi for Spreading False Information

The Kwara State Government has dismissed reports claiming that nine local government areas in the state are under siege by bandits, describing the allegations as “totally false and reckless.” In a statement on Monday, the government said no part of Kwara is currently under the control or threat of bandits, contrary to viral claims circulating on social media. “We wish to alert the public to some reckless claims that nine local government areas of Kwara State are under siege by bandits. This is totally false. No local government area is under siege in the state,” the statement read. The government admitted that there have been isolated security challenges in some areas but said they do not justify the “wicked escalation and fake news” allegedly promoted by political opponents within and outside the state. It accused certain “opposition elements” of deliberately spreading fear and misinformation, referring to them as “the online promoters and equivalence of bandits.” “These individuals instill fear in the populace through fake news such as the unfounded claim of nine LGAs being under siege and alleged movements of gunmen in parts of Asa Local Government Area,” it added. The statement further expressed disappointment that former Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, allegedly shared the false report on his social media platforms. “We regretfully observe that Mr. Peter Obi has lent his social media handles to spreading such fake news. This is not expected from him as a statesman. We request Mr. Peter Obi to bring down the post as it is totally false and inappropriate,” the government said. Kwara authorities urged citizens to desist from spreading unverified information capable of causing panic and undermining the efforts of security agencies. “This irresponsible behaviour only makes things harder for our security forces, who already have enough on their plates,” the statement concluded.

Nigeria Seeks $2 Billion China Loan to Fund New Electricity Super Grid

Nigeria Seeks $2 Billion China Loan to Fund New Electricity Super Grid

The Nigerian government is in advanced negotiations with China’s Export-Import Bank for a $2 billion loan to build a new electricity super grid aimed at tackling the country’s persistent power supply challenges. Bloomberg reports that the proposed super grid will boost power transmission across the eastern and western regions, home to most of Nigeria’s industrial consumers. At an economic summit in Abuja on Monday, Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu said the project is part of efforts to decentralize power generation and encourage large commercial users, who previously disconnected from the unreliable national grid, to return. “It’s part of plans to decentralise power generation in Nigeria and get the heavy commercial users that left the power grid because of its unreliability to return,” Adelabu said. Negotiations with China’s Exim Bank are reportedly progressing, and cabinet approval for financing the project has already been granted, according to Bloomberg. Currently, Nigeria generates about 13 gigawatts of electricity, but only a third reaches consumers due to frequent grid collapses. By comparison, South Africa, with a quarter of Nigeria’s population, has an installed capacity of roughly 70 gigawatts. The unreliable power supply has pushed many businesses to rely on self-generated electricity, which now makes up nearly half of national consumption. The super grid is expected to improve power delivery to industrial zones, stimulate manufacturing, and support economic growth. Since taking office in 2023, President Bola Tinubu’s administration has implemented economic reforms, including removing fuel subsidies, overhauling the tax system, and improving security in oil-producing regions to attract investment. The government also approved higher tariffs for some urban electricity consumers to strengthen the financial viability of the power sector. According to Bloomberg, these measures helped electricity distribution companies raise revenue by 70 per cent in 2024, with further growth projected to reach ₦2.4 trillion ($1.6 billion) in 2025.

U20 World Cup: Nigeria, Argentina Light Up Santiago in Big Last-16 Clash

U20 World Cup: Nigeria, Argentina Light Up Santiago in Big Last-16 Clash

Nigeria and Argentina will, once again, set the global football stage alight as the Round of 16 of this year’s FIFA U20 World Cup finals commence in Chile on Wednesday evening. Both countries have fought memorable battles in the FIFA World Cup finals, FIFA U20 World Cup finals and at the Men’s Olympic Football Tournament, but the most recent remains Nigeria’s spectacular 2-0 defeat of the Albiceleste in a Round of 16 encounter when Argentina hosted the FIFA U20 World Cup finals two years ago. Ibrahim Muhammad and Haliru Sarki got the goals that stunned the hosts and upturned the prediction of most pundits, with the Flying Eagles marching ahead to the quarter-finals where they lost in extra time to the Republic of Korea. Two decades ago, the Flying Eagles narrowly lost 1-2 to the Argies in the FIFA U20 World Cup Final in The Netherlands, both Argentine goals coming through penalty kicks converted by Lionel Messi, while Chinedu Ogbuke Obasi scored a brilliant goal for Nigeria. Argentina have won the FIFA U20 World Cup six times, while Nigeria have finished with the silver medals twice (1989 and 2005) and the bronze once (1985), but there will be no inferiority complex on the part of the seven-time African champions when they take the pitch of the Estadio Nacional Julio Martinez Pradanos in Santiago from 8.30pm Nigeria time on Wednesday. Self-belief, sense of purpose and pride, and resilience got the wards of Aliyu Zubair through the group stage, with four points off Saudi Arabia and Colombia, and the Colombians are unlikely to forget how the West Africans dominated a game they (Colombia) were tipped to easily win. Thrice, the Flying Eagles struck the bar in the encounter at the Estadio Fiscal de Talca, and earned a deserved point at the end when captain Daniel Bameyi cooly converted a penalty kick conceded in desperation by the South Americans as the tireless Nigerian attack went on the rampage once more. Coach Zubair must pick a new man to team up with Tahir Maigana and Kparobo Arierhi in the fore, with Suleman Sani suspended after accumulating two yellow cards in the group stage. The Flying Eagles arrived in Santiago from Talca on Monday evening, and will conduct a training session on Tuesday evening ahead of the clash with the Argies.
