Onana to Return for Man United vs. Lyon -Amorim

André Onana will return to the Manchester United team for their crucial Europa League clash against Lyon, head coach Ruben Amorim has confirmed. Onana was omitted for the 4-1 defeat to Newcastle United on Sunday after making two errors in the first game against Lyon last week. But the goalkeeper will return for the second leg at Old Trafford on Thursday, replacing No. 2 Altay Bayindir. Joshua Zirkzee will miss the game against the Ligue 1 side after being ruled out for the rest of the season with a hamstring injury picked up at St. James’ Park. “Onana will play tomorrow,” Amorim said. “I just think first of all as a coach and also as a former player, I try to do things that can help a player in this situation. “So sometimes we talk about managing players physically, we have to manage them also mentally but they have to return to competition. “Onana is ready, he had one weekend that I felt it was better for him to not play and a good thing for Altay to play and this week my thinking was to put Onana to play.” Speaking at a news conference on Wednesday, Amorim was also asked whether he could look to sign a new goalkeeper ahead of next season. “We need to improve every position on the field, goalkeeper is the same,” Amorim said. “We can work with André. André Onana already proved he is a top player with Inter. Altay the same with Fenerbahce. We are going to make that evaluation for any position in the squad. You can see my record. My record is the worst in the team. I am also underperforming.” The tie against Lyon is finely balanced after the 2-2 draw in France. Zirkzee came off the bench to score at Groupama Stadium, but will miss the return fixture after suffering a hamstring problem in the second half against Newcastle. Amorim confirmed the 23-year-old will not play again this season, leaving Rasmus Højlund as the only recognised senior striker in the squad. Højlund is enduring a difficult campaign with just eight goals in 43 games. “Joshua is out for the season,” Amorim said. “He will not play more this season, let’s prepare him for the next one. It is tough for him especially in this moment. “He is improving in all aspects and it is hard for any player to stop.” Despite languishing in the bottom half of the Premier League table, United could still finish the season with a trophy and a place in next season’s Champions League if they win the Europa League. Victory over Lyon would set up a semifinal against either Athletic Club or Rangers. Winning the competition would give Amorim a vital boost going into the summer and the Portuguese coach has admitted that playing in the Champions League would change what the club can do in the next transfer window. “It is more about the budget,” he said. “That is important when you are planning the next season. Champions League can change everything. You can see it both ways. If you have Champions League it is going to be tough to play against top teams on Wednesday and then top teams in the Premier League. “We are in the moment when the team needs a lot of work, that means a lot of time to train. We want to win the title, that is the most important thing. If you don’t have Champions League you have full weeks to rebuild the team.”

He also applauded the accomplishments of the Aluo-led board so far. NFF General Secretary, Dr Mohammed Sanusi, was emphatic that given the various changes and innovations introduced into the league by the present board, the NFF has no regrets in putting the board in charge of the second-tier league. He utilized the opportunity to invite First Bank PLC to consider partnering with the NNL, as a way of giving back to the society and taking the youth off the streets to curb all forms of social vices. In his remarks, former NFF President Alhaji Sani Lulu Abdullahi commended the warm relationship among the various league bodies and the Nigeria Football Federation. Tyson Fury’ll Never Fight Again -Top Promoter Says

Boxing promoter Bob Arum has insisted that Tyson Fury “will never fight again” after the Brit retired from fighting earlier this year. The Gypsy King retired from professional boxing for the fourth time back in January, throwing into doubt the opportunity to see him take on Anthony Joshua in a highly anticipated Battle of Britain bout. But Fury has come out of retirement three times so a fourth U-turn would hardly be surprising for the former heavyweight fighter. Arum, chief executive of Las Vegas boxing promoter Top Rank, said: “If I was a betting man I would say he will never fight again. Marvin Hagler [former US boxer] had an expression – ‘a rich guy who goes to bed wearing silk pyjamas doesn’t get up in the morning to do road work’. “Tyson, really, I don’t think wants to get up in the morning and do road work and go through the experience of having to train when economically he doesn’t have to do it any more.” Fury’s professional boxing record has seen him win 34 of 37 fights, drawing one and losing two. The draw came in 2018 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles against Deontay Wilder for the WBC heavyweight title. Both losses, his last two fights, came against Oleksandr Usyk. The Ukrainian is seen as the one to beat at the moment having become the third man after Terence Crawford and Naoya Inoue to become an undisputed champion in two weights within the four-belt era. It comes as Daniel Dubois and Usyk are holding talks over a fight at Wembley Stadium in July. Dunois was due to fight Joseph Parker in February in defence of his IBF belt but illness forced his withdrawal. Usyk has hinted at a retirement soon, but has not committed to such a decision. And it is uncertain whether British fans will ever get their Fury-Joshua clash.

Champions League: PSG Survives Thriller at The Villa

Paris Saint-Germain beat Aston Villa 5-4 on aggregate to move into the semi-final of the Champions League where they will play Arsenal or holders Real Madrid. PSG went into the game at Villa Park leading 3-1 from the first leg at the Parc des Princes in Paris. Morocco international Achraf Hakimi increased the aggregate score to 4-1 when he swept home after 11 minutes. Fellow defender Nuno Mendes got his second goal of the tie mid way through the half to put the visitors 5-1 up and looking set to saunter into the semis. But just before half-time, William Pacho deflected Youri Tielemans’ shot into his own net past goalkeeper Gigi Donnarumma to offer Villa a shred of respectability. That transformed into a glimmer of hope 10 minutes after the pause. Villa skipper John McGinn picked up the ball just inside the PSG half and barrelled forward. Unchallenged, he let fly from 30 metres and his shot rose and dipped over a befuddled Donnarumma into the net. Donnarumma pushed away a vicious goal-bound drive from Marcus Rashford for a corner a couple of minutes later but from the ensuing kick, Villa worked the ball back to Rashford who foxed two defenders on the right wing, drove into the penalty area and cut back for Ezri Konsa to steer the ball past Donnarumma for 3-2 on the night and inflame Villa’s dreams. Villa pushed but PSG held off the charge to slink into the semis – 5-4 on aggregate. “Very proud of the boys,” Konsa told broadcaster Amazon Prime. “The two goals at the start killed us but we showed great heart to get back into the game. Unfortunately it wasn’t enough.” PSG will take on the winners of the tie between holders Real Madrid and Arsenal who go into the game at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday night leading 3-0 from the first leg at the Emirates Stadium. “It’s going to be such a difficult semi-final whether it’s Arsenal or Real Madrid,” PSG skipper Marqinhos told Amazon Prime. “But there’s belief we can go all the way. We knew it was going to be difficult against Villa. The tie is never won in the first leg. They scored the goals in the second-half and it wasn’t easy at times but we did what we needed to do and we are through to the next round.” In Tuesday night’s other quarter-final, Guinea international Sehrou Guirassy hit a hat trick as Borussia Dortmund beat Barcelona 3-1 at the Signal Iduna Park. However, the Spaniards advance 5-3 on aggregate to a semi-final clash with Inter Milan or Bayern Munich who play on Wednesday night. Inter won the first leg in Munich 2-1.
