CAF Postpones 2026 WAFCON In Morocco To July-August

The Confederation of African Football has officially postponed the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, moving the tournament from its original March schedule to a new window between July 25 and August 16. CAF confirmed the change in a statement on Thursday, ending weeks of uncertainty over the competition’s timing. Morocco was awarded hosting rights in October 2024, and the tournament was initially slated to run from March 17 to April 3. The governing body said the rescheduling followed consultations with FIFA and other key stakeholders, emphasizing that the move was necessary to ensure the smooth organisation of the continent’s premier women’s football event. “After discussions between CAF and its partners, FIFA and other stakeholders, CAF decided to reschedule the dates of the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations 2026 to 25 July – 16 August 2026 to ensure the success of this important women’s competition, in the light of certain unforeseen circumstances,” the statement read. CAF also expressed confidence that preparations for the tournament are progressing and that the event will meet expectations. The announcement comes amid growing concerns over the readiness of the tournament, with several pre-competition arrangements still incomplete ahead of the original March kickoff. Details such as venues for knockout rounds, accreditation for journalists, match officials, and technical workshops had yet to be finalised, and promotional activities for the competition were largely absent.

Arsenal Edge Brighton 1-0 As Saka Strike Sends Gunners Seven Points Clear

Arsenal battled through a tense and chaotic night at the Amex Stadium to edge past Brighton & Hove Albion and move seven points clear at the top of the Premier League table. Despite being second best for large spells, Mikel Arteta’s side made their early opportunity count. Bukayo Saka broke the deadlock in the ninth minute when his low effort took a decisive deflection off Carlos Baleba, wrong-footing goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen as the ball slipped through his legs. The visitors had earlier escaped a nightmare start. Goalkeeper David Raya gifted possession to Baleba inside the opening seconds, but the Brighton midfielder failed to capitalise, producing a weak chip that allowed Gabriel to scramble back and clear off the line. Brighton dominated large parts of the contest and piled pressure on Arsenal’s defence. Their frustration grew just before the hour mark when Raya saved from Georginio Rutter and remained on the turf receiving treatment, sparking anger among the home supporters who felt the visitors were deliberately slowing the game down. The Seagulls came closest to an equaliser when Mats Wieffer found himself unmarked from close range, only to head straight at Raya. That miss proved costly. As the game wore on, Brighton’s intensity dipped, allowing Arsenal to grind out a hard-fought and scrappy victory. The result was made even sweeter for the Gunners after Manchester City were held to a 2-2 draw at home by Nottingham Forest, giving Arsenal breathing space in the title race.

FIFA Dashes Super Eagles’ World Cup Hope, Confirms DR Congo for Play-Off Tourney

FIFA on Wednesday confirmed the final line-up for the inter-confederation play-off tournament, naming DR Congo as Africa’s representative. The development by the footballing body has dashed Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. In an accreditation notice circulated to journalists ahead of the competition, FIFA detailed the tournament format and listed the six participating nations. DR Congo’s inclusion leaves no room for Nigeria, whose football federation had challenged the result of their defeat in the CAF play-offs in November 2025. The Nigeria Football Federation lodged a formal protest, alleging that DR Congo fielded ineligible players during the decisive tie, which ended 1-1 and went to penalties, where Nigeria lost. The appeal sought to overturn the result and secure the Super Eagles’ place in the inter-continental play-offs.

Trump Says He Doesn’t Care If Iran Plays In World Cup As Middle East Tensions Rise

Former US President Donald Trump has said he is unconcerned about whether Iran participates in this summer’s World Cup, as tensions escalate in the Middle East. The United States and Israel launched strikes in Iran on Saturday, with the conflict now spreading across the region. Iran has qualified for the World Cup finals, scheduled in the US, Canada, and Mexico in June and July, for the fourth consecutive edition, but their involvement is now uncertain. Trump told Politico, “I really don’t care. I think Iran is a very badly defeated country. They’re running on fumes.” Iran is set to play all three of its group matches in the US, starting against New Zealand in Los Angeles on June 15. The unrest has also affected sports elsewhere in the region. The Fujairah Open, an ATP Challenger Tour tennis tournament in the United Arab Emirates, was cancelled after nearby drone strikes and an attack on an oil terminal forced players to abandon the court.

Atletico Madrid Reach Copa Del Rey Final Despite 3-0 Defeat At Barcelona

Atletico Madrid have booked their place in the Copa del Rey final for the first time since 2013, progressing on aggregate despite suffering a 3-0 loss to Barcelona on Tuesday night. Diego Simeone’s men advanced thanks to their commanding 4-0 victory in the first leg in Madrid, which secured a 4-3 aggregate triumph over the two-legged semi-final clash. Barcelona came out aggressively at home, aware they needed at least four goals to drag the tie into extra time. Their breakthrough arrived in the 30th minute when 18-year-old Marc Bernal, stepping in for the injured Frenkie de Jong, converted from close range after a low cross from Lamine Yamal. The hosts doubled their advantage in first-half stoppage time, with Raphinha calmly converting from the penalty spot after Pedri was brought down inside the area. Bernal then grabbed his second of the night in the 72nd minute, volleying home Joao Cancelo’s delivery to make it 3-0. Despite their dominance and three goals on the night, Barcelona were unable to find the crucial fourth strike that would have kept their title defence alive. Atletico will now prepare for next month’s final in Seville, where they are set to meet either Real Sociedad or Athletic Bilbao.

Pre-WAFCON Friendlies: Fabulous Falcons Flog Lionesses 3-1 in Yaounde

Perennial African champions Nigeria underscored the truism that class is permanent when they trounced the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon 3-1 in the second of a two-match tour in Yaounde on Tuesday. Three days after they were pipped by the odd goal in the first meeting, the Super Falcons returned to the Military Stadium in northern Yaoundé and flipped the script emphatically, beating the Lionesses 3-1. Head Coach Justin Madugu made seven changes to the side that lost on Saturday. Cameroon struck first again, a seventh-minute goal that briefly stirred memories of the weekend defeat. However, forward Chinwendu Ihezuo drew Nigeria level in the 32nd minute, rising above her marker to power home a header from Rinsola Babajide’s cross. Then, just before half time, the comeback was complete. After a scramble inside the box, Babajide who had assisted the leveller showed sharp instincts to fire Nigeria in front in the 43rd minute. Madugu’s reshaped midfield pressed higher, closed central lanes quicker, and forced Cameroon into hopeful deliveries. In the second half, Captain Rasheedat Ajibade, tireless down the right, delivered a teasing cross into the heart of the box. Michelle Alozie attacked it with conviction, launching herself into a flying header that made it 3-1 in the 64th minute. Both teams used the games as part of their preparations for the 14th edition of the Women Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled for Morocco, 17th March – 3rd April.

Real Madrid Winger Rodrygo Suffers Ruptured ACL, Ruled Out Of World Cup With Brazil

Real Madrid has confirmed that winger Rodrygo Goes has suffered a serious knee injury, which is expected to rule him out of the World Cup with Brazil this summer. The club announced on Tuesday that medical tests revealed Rodrygo has a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament and a tear of the lateral meniscus in his right knee. The 25-year-old sustained the injury while coming on as a substitute during Real Madrid’s 1-0 home defeat to Getafe on Monday. Though he finished the match, further examinations revealed the severity of the damage. Rodrygo had just returned from a month-long absence due to tendonitis, making the setback particularly frustrating. Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti will now be unable to include the forward in the squad as the five-time World Cup winners aim for a sixth trophy in the United States. Real Madrid will also face challenges, with Kylian Mbappe sidelined due to a knee sprain. Manager Alvaro Arbeloa now has only three fit forwards—Vinicius Junior, Gonzalo Garcia, and Franco Mastantuono—ahead of next week’s Champions League last-16 tie against Manchester City at the Santiago Bernabeu.
