Tyson Fury to Face Arslanbek Makhmudov in Comeback Fight

Tyson Fury’s return to the ring has been confirmed with the former heavyweight world champion set to fight Russian Arslanbek Makhmudov on April 11. Turki Alalshikh, chairman of Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority announced the fight on Wednesday. It will be streamed on Netflix and promoted by The Ring Magazine. Fury (34-2-1, 24 KOs), who announced his latest retirement in January 2025, declared earlier this month he was set to return to boxing. He will face Makhmudov (21-2, 19 KOs) in April and while the fight will be held in the United Kingdom, an exact location has yet to be confirmed. Makhmudov, a Russian boxer based in Canada, was rumored to be in line to fight Fury following his impressive win over British heavyweight Dave Allen in October last year. The fight will be Fury’s first in the U.K. since December 2022 when he beat Derek Chisora for the third time, defending his WBC title. He then fought three times in Saudi Arabia, beating Francis Ngannou in October 2023 before back-to-back fights against Ukrainian Oleksandr Usyk for the undisputed heavyweight championship. Usyk won both fights on points in May and December 2024, respectively, becoming the first undisputed champion of the four-belt era. Fury announced his retirement following the second clash with Usyk. The fight will be the first live event taking place in the U.K. that Netflix will broadcast, with the streaming service also filming with Fury and his family for the second season of the show At Home with the Furys, which is set to be released later this year.

Aussie Open: Sinner Sets Up Djokovic Semi-final Blockbuster

Reigning champion Jannik Sinner called Novak Djokovic “an inspiration” after setting up an Australian Open semi-final blockbuster against the 24-time Grand Slam winner. Italian second seed Sinner swatted aside big-serving American Ben Shelton 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 and has dropped only one set in moving ominously into the last four. The other semi-final at Melbourne Park is between world number one Carlos Alcaraz and third-ranked Alexander Zverev. “We all know what a challenge I am up to,” the relentless Sinner, who is chasing a third Australian title in a row, said of facing Djokovic, 38. “These are the moments you practise for and wake up for in the morning. “It improves you as a player and a person, we are lucky to have Novak still here playing incredible tennis for his age.” Sinner has a 6-4 win-loss record over the Serb, but has won their last five encounters. Djokovic, a record 10-time winner in Melbourne, took his place in the semi-finals when Italian opponent Lorenzo Musetti retired hurt when he was leading the Serb 6-4, 6-3, 1-3. Sinner, who has now reached a sixth consecutive Grand Slam semi-final, said that Djokovic still set the standard for professionalism. “Me, as a 24-year-old, I’m lucky to have someone like him in front of my eyes, and I can hopefully learn something,” said Sinner, who together with Alcaraz has dominated the last eight majors. “He’s an inspiration for all of us and especially the young players,” he added. Sinner and Shelton came into the quarter-final with the Italian having won eight of their nine previous meetings in straight sets. Eighth-seeded Shelton has got the better of Sinner just once, in their first encounter, in 2023. Sinner’s dominance includes winning their Melbourne semi-final 12 months ago, and it was to be more of the same on a cool evening on Rod Laver Arena. Sinner raced into a 4-1 lead in the first set as he sent Shelton, who is a year younger at 23, scurrying to all corners of the court. A Sinner ace sealed the first set in 49 minutes and, despite having the crowd willing him on, Shelton was broken again in falling two sets down. Four-time major champion Sinner was imperious and looked unflustered on the few occasions that the aggressive Shelton put him under the cosh. They went with serve in the third set and Shelton did his best to feed off what he has approvingly called a “rowdy” Melbourne crowd. But he struck his 33rd unforced error to give Sinner three break points, and after saving one of them, the American double-faulted to gift his opponent a 5-4 lead and signal the end was close. “We go day by day, today I felt I was moving again a little bit better, I feel physically stronger again,” Sinner said.

Tammy Abraham Joins Aston Villa in £18.2m Deal

Aston Villa have signed striker Tammy Abraham from Besiktas in a deal worth £18.2m. Abraham, who has 11 England caps, returns to the club after he spent the 2018/19 season on loan at Villa Park and helped the club earn promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs. The forward moved to Roma from Chelsea in 2021 and was loaned to AC Milan last season before switching to Besiktas on loan this season, where he has scored 12 goals in all competitions. The Turkish side, who were reluctant to part with Abraham, have had to pay £11.2m to Roma to sign the striker permanently before preparing to sell him to Villa for £7m more. Abraham has not played in the Premier League since leaving Chelsea in 2021. The striker, who will compete with Ollie Watkins for a spot in Unai Emery’s team, is also the latest in a long set of deals between Villa and Roma.

Spurs Stars Survive Auto Crash

Tottenham stars Wilson Odobert and Randal Kolo Muani have been involved in a car crash.   The pair had been travelling on the M25 motorway, Hertfordshire, on Tuesday, when a tyre blew out on the black Ferrari they were in.   Images from the scene show the French attackers standing at the side of the motorway, alongside what appears to be emergency service personnel, with the front-right tyre of the car completely burnt out.   Spurs boss Thomas Frank confirmed the players had suffered minor injuries.   ‘Kolo Muani and Wilson Odobert are both fine. They were unfortunately involved in a minor car accident. Everyone else involved is fine. It was a tyre blowing up. They will be travelling here a little later tonight,’ he said.   Both players are expected to be available for selection for Spurs’ Champions League tie on Wednesday against Eintracht Frankfurt.

Spain Set to Host 2030 World Cup Final

Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) President Rafael Louzan has said that Spain will stage the final of the 2030 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Spain, Portugal and Morocco. Morocco wants to stage the game in Casablanca at the Grand Stade Hassan II, a huge stadium currently under construction north of the city. “Spain has proven its organisational capacity over many years. It will be the leader of the 2030 World Cup and the final of that World Cup will be held here,” Louzan said late on Monday (local time) at an event organised by the Madrid Sports Press Association. Louzan did not say whether the match would be played at Madrid’s Santiago Bernabeu or Barcelona’s Camp Nou, the two leading candidates. Once completed in late 2028, the new stadium in Morocco is expected to hold 115,000 spectators. Morocco’s Royal Football Federation (FRMF) President Faouzi Lekjaa last year expressed his wish to see a final against Spain in Casablanca. Louzan also alluded to the challenges Morocco faced during its hosting of the last Africa Cup of Nations, including the chaotic scenes during the final between Senegal and Morocco this month. That match, which Senegal won 1-0, was overshadowed by fan disruptions and player protests that temporarily halted play. “Morocco is really undergoing a transformation in every sense, with magnificent stadiums,” Louzan said. “We must recognise what has been done well. But in the Africa Cup of Nations, we have seen scenes that damage the image of world football.” FIFA and the Portuguese and Moroccan football federations have not responded to requests for comment on the final’s location. FIFA told Reuters last year it was premature to decide the venue for the 2030 final, saying the host city for the 2026 World Cup final was revealed only two years before the tournament. World football’s ruling body has the final say on where the match will be played.   XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX   Former FIFA President Joins Call for U.S. World Cup Boycott Former FIFA president Sepp Blatter joined a growing call for an international boycott of the World Cup matches scheduled to take place in the U.S. this summer. That would include the 6 matches at Levi’s Stadium.   Blatter’s recommendation comes days after former FIFA reform chairman Mark Pieth suggested to a Swiss newspaper that soccer fans should avoid attending games in U.S. cities in light of Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations in the streets and political unrest. The tournament, beginning in June, is playing out in Mexico, Canada and 11 U.S. locations.   “For the fans, there’s only one piece of advice: stay away from the USA!” Blatter posted on X Monday. “I think Mark Pieth is right to question this World Cup.”   Vice presidents of the German soccer federation Oke Göttlich told a Hamburg news outet last week that it’s time for soccer fans and teams to “seriously consider” not visiting the U.S. because of the Trump administration’s foreign and domestic policies. The President has caused concern in Europe by expressing interest in acquiring the island of Greenland from Denmark and questioning NATO’s value to the U.S.   Many fans of Iran and Haiti’s soccer clubs won’t have the option of seeing their teams play live when the World Cup tournament begins in June due to a travel ban imposed by the Trump administration last summer.   Trump has expressed excitement about the World Cup coming to the U.S. since his first administration helped bring the tournament to North America by teaming up with Canada and Mexico in 2017 to make a winning bid. The President shares a warm relationship with FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who presented him with the newly invented FIFA Peace Prize in December after Trump unsuccessfully campaigned to win the Nobel Peace Prize.   He called that trophy “truly one of the great honors of my life.”   Team USA men’s squad begins its longshot campaign to win the World Cup with a June 12 match against Paraguay in Southern California. They’ve never won the tournament. Argentina is the defending champion.   The U.S. women’s team, which will compete for the Women’s World Cup in Brazil in 2027, has won its tournament four times.

Cunha’s Late Strike Sinks Arsenal As Manchester United Claim Dramatic 3-2 Win At Emirates

Matheus Cunha struck late in the 87th minute to hand Manchester United a dramatic 3-2 win over Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium, a result that could have major implications for this season’s Premier League title race. Despite remaining top of the table, Arsenal’s advantage has now been cut to four points, with Manchester City and Aston Villa firmly in pursuit and 15 matches still to play. For United, the victory marked a third consecutive positive result under interim boss Michael Carrick, lifting them into fourth place. The decisive moment arrived moments after Mikel Merino had brought Arsenal back on level terms. Earlier in the second half, Patrick Dorgu had restored United’s lead to make it 2-1 following a tightly contested first half that ended 1-1. Arsenal had gone in front when Lisandro Martinez inadvertently turned the ball into his own net, but United responded before the break as Bryan Mbeumo capitalised on a poor backpass from Martin Zubimendi to draw the visitors level. Only a fortnight ago, United were struggling for form, but the appointment of Carrick until the end of the season has sparked a revival. Back-to-back wins against Manchester City and Arsenal across consecutive weekends have transformed their outlook. The resurgence follows the dismissal of Ruben Amorim, whose 14-month spell yielded just 15 wins from 47 league matches. Darren Fletcher’s brief interim run produced draws against Leeds United and Burnley before an FA Cup exit to Brighton, but Carrick’s early impact suggests United may finally be turning a corner.
