Morocco 2025: Super Eagles Set for NAIJA 4 THE WIN Campaign as AFCON Beckons

The Nigeria Football Federation has announced the commencement of the NAIJA 4 THE WIN campaign as the Super Eagles return to the continent for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, with a renewed commitment to reclaiming the prestigious title for the nation.   Nigeria, three-time winners of Africa’s flagship football championship, arrive in Morocco with a rich history and a firm resolve to restore continental glory. The silver-medal finish at the 2023 edition in Abidjan, though commendable, remains a reminder of unfinished business. Those memories serve not as setbacks, but as motivation for a stronger, more decisive outing.   Under the leadership of Head Coach Eric Sékou Chelle and the unwavering total support of the National Sports Commission and the Nigeria Football Federation, the team continues to build a solid structure based on discipline, experience, emerging talent, and collective ambition. The objective is unambiguous: to improve on the last performance and bring the Africa Cup of Nations trophy back to Nigeria.   The NAIJA 4 THE WIN campaign serves as a unifying call to Nigerians across all regions and the diaspora. It reinforces the belief that, just as in Nigeria 1980, Tunisia 1994 and South Africa 2010, Nigeria can once again rise to the summit of African football. Each of these victories carries its own legacy, and Morocco 2025 presents another opportunity to inscribe a new chapter in that storied tradition.   The NFF urges supporters to stand firmly behind the Super Eagles throughout the tournament from homes and viewing centres across the country to the stands in Morocco. The passion, encouragement, and presence of Nigerians remain critical to the team’s success.

Emirates Late Drama: Own Goal Secures 2-1 Win Over Wolves To Keep Us Top Of Premier League

An own goal deep into second-half stoppage time secured a dramatic 2-1 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Emirates Stadium, keeping us top of the Premier League. After a subdued first half, we came alive after the break, testing Wolves keeper Johnstone with several efforts before taking the lead on 70 minutes. Bukayo Saka’s corner hit the post and deflected off the visiting goalkeeper into the net. As the match approached full time, Wolves struck back. Tolu Arokodare’s header leveled the score, threatening a repeat of recent late collapses against Sunderland and Aston Villa. But in the 94th minute, Yerson Mosquera inadvertently redirected another Saka corner past Johnstone, securing a priceless victory and stretching our lead at the summit to five points. First Half Frustration Fans may have expected a straightforward scoring display for the league leaders against a side struggling at the foot of the table, but the opening 45 minutes were largely cagey. Our first meaningful chance saw Jurrien Timber nod over from close range, with Viktor Gyokeres arguably better positioned to test Johnstone. Wolves then broke quickly, allowing Hwang Hee-Chan a 50-yard run and shot that David Raya managed to block. In the chase, Ben White suffered a muscle injury, forcing Myles Lewis-Skelly on in the 30th minute. Gabriel Martinelli had three opportunities to break the deadlock but failed to capitalize—heading wide, seeing a shot blocked, and then poking one past the post. Despite our dominance, we entered half-time without a shot on target. Wolves, meanwhile, had a late chance of their own, only denied by a crucial Piero Hincapie sliding block. Stroke of Fortune The breakthrough finally came on 70 minutes. Saka curled a corner toward goal, which struck the far post and bounced off Johnstone into the net, ending a 46-year wait to score against Wolves under these circumstances. After taking the lead, we pressed for a second, with Martin Ødegaard, Leandro Trossard, and Mikel Merino introduced to add fresh impetus. Ødegaard forced a side-netting effort, Gyokeres’ turned shot narrowly missed, and Trossard’s close-range attempt skimmed past the post. Double Late Drama Wolves launched a late fightback, and in the 90th minute, Matheus Mane’s cross found Arokodare, whose header beat Raya to level the score. Just when it seemed we might drop points again, Saka’s corner in the 94th minute caused chaos in the box. Gabriel Jesus pressured Mosquera, whose deflection found the net, sending the Emirates into euphoria and securing a vital three points. The win kept us atop the table and marked another thrilling example of our resilience in the dying moments of games.

Salah Returns With Assist As Ekitike Double Fires Liverpool To 2-0 Win Over Brighton

Mohamed Salah enjoyed a notable return to action for Liverpool by providing an assist as Arne Slot’s side secured a win over Brighton, powered by a brace from Hugo Ekitike. The victory lifted Liverpool up to sixth place in the table and stretched their unbeaten run to five matches, while also delivering their first success at Anfield since November 4. Attention was firmly on Salah, who was included in the matchday squad after being omitted from the midweek Champions League win at Inter Milan following his widely discussed outburst at Leeds United. Starting on the bench, the Egyptian was introduced in the 26th minute after Joe Gomez was forced off injured, with Dominik Szoboszlai switching to right-back. Liverpool made a dream start, scoring inside the opening minute. Gomez rose to meet a ball into the box and nodded it into the path of Ekitike, who controlled and fired past Bart Verbruggen after just 46 seconds — the fastest Premier League goal this season. Brighton had opportunities to draw level but failed to capitalise. Alisson denied Diego Gomez when he broke through on goal, and the same player later missed an open net early in the second half. Those missed chances proved costly as Liverpool doubled their advantage on the hour mark. Salah’s corner found Ekitike unmarked at the back post, and the French striker headed in his second of the afternoon. The goal took Ekitike to 10 league goals for the season and marked his second consecutive double, following his two strikes in the 3-3 draw at Leeds. Salah’s assist was historic, moving him to 277 goal involvements in 302 Premier League appearances for Liverpool — the highest tally by any player at a single club, surpassing Wayne Rooney’s record at Manchester United. He was lively after coming on and nearly crowned his return with a goal late on, but fired wide in stoppage time after being set up by Federico Chiesa. After the final whistle, Salah acknowledged the Anfield crowd from all sides of the stadium before preparing to join up with the national team ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations, where he could miss up to eight matches should Egypt reach the final. Despite ongoing uncertainty over his future at the club, Liverpool recorded back-to-back wins and clean sheets, while Brighton slipped to ninth place.

Cole Palmer Ends Goal Drought As Chelsea Beat Everton 2-0 To Return To Winning Ways

Cole Palmer marked his return to the scoresheet for the first time since September as Chelsea snapped a four-match winless streak with a 2-0 home win over an in-form Everton side at Stamford Bridge. The 23-year-old attacker, who has been managing a groin problem that sidelined him for over two months, struck after 21 minutes with England boss Thomas Tuchel watching from the stands. The move was sparked by Malo Gusto, who later found the net himself shortly before the interval. Everton started brightly and controlled much of the opening spell. Iliman Ndiaye tested the Chelsea defence with two efforts, while James Garner also went close as the visitors pressed early. Chelsea, however, settled through Palmer after a difficult start to December that featured losses to Leeds and Atalanta, along with a draw at Bournemouth. Slipped in behind the defence by Gusto, Palmer steadied himself before wrong-footing Jordan Pickford with a neat finish at the near post. The goal shifted the balance of the game. Alejandro Garnacho wasted a number of opportunities, the most glaring coming when he fired wide with the goal gaping after latching onto a poor back pass from substitute Carlos Alcaraz. The chance came shortly after Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, facing his former club, was forced off injured. Both sides threatened again before the break, with Enzo Fernandez and Jack Grealish unable to convert their chances. Chelsea then doubled their advantage just before half-time as Gusto reacted quickest to bundle in Pedro Neto’s delivery. After the restart, Garnacho lifted a close-range effort over the bar before making way for Jamie Gittens. Grealish had a header saved and later volleyed wide when well placed, while Ndiaye struck the post late on and Trevoh Chalobah produced a crucial block to deny Alcaraz inside the area. Chelsea’s sharper finishing proved the difference as they tightened their grip on fourth place in the Premier League. Everton, meanwhile, stay eighth, having played more matches than several teams around them.

Eto’o and Marc Brys Clash as Cameroon Names Two AFCON Squads

Cameroon plunged into chaos just days before the Africa Cup of Nations as tensions erupted between national team manager Marc Brys and Cameroonian Football Federation president Samuel Eto’o. Eto’o, who recently celebrated his fourth year as president of the federation, is reportedly in a bitter feud with Brys, who has refused to step down. Despite Eto’o declaring that Brys’s tenure is over, the Belgian coach remains under contract with the Ministry of Sport until September 2026 and has yet to be officially dismissed. The dispute has thrown the national team into confusion, with two separate AFCON squads now named. On December 1, the Cameroonian FA, under Eto’o’s leadership, announced a 28-man squad with David Pagou — not Brys — as head coach. Pagou, officially listed on FIFA’s website, held a press conference to present the squad and outline Cameroon’s ambitions for the tournament, alongside a newly appointed coaching staff. The squad also featured several high-profile omissions, including former Manchester United goalkeeper André Onana, ex-Bayern Munich forward Eric Choupo-Moting, and veteran striker Vincent Aboubakar. Sources claim Eto’o may have pushed for Aboubakar’s exclusion to prevent him from breaking Eto’o’s all-time goal-scoring record. Aboubakar, 33, is currently 12 goals shy of surpassing Eto’o and could feasibly break the record during AFCON. The saga took another twist on Wednesday when Brys, rejecting his dismissal, announced a second Cameroon squad that reinstated the previously omitted players, further fueling the ongoing controversy. The drama has cast a shadow over Cameroon’s AFCON preparations, leaving fans and players uncertain just as the tournament is set to begin.

Ekiti Queens Get ₦2.5m Fine, Three-Game Home Ban

The Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) has imposed sanctions on Ekiti Queens following the assault on match officials during their Wednesday’s home match against Edo Queens in Ado-Ekiti, describing the incident as a severe violation of league safety and conduct regulations. In a swift response on Thursday, NWFL Media Director Samuel Ahmadu issued an official statement detailing the disciplinary actions, warning that the league organisers would not tolerate any threat to the safety of referees or the integrity of its competitions. Confirming the sanctions, NWFL Chief Operating Officer Modupe Shabi condemned the attack and reiterated the league’s firm stance on safety and professionalism. “The assault on our match officials in Ado-Ekiti is completely unacceptable and a gross breach of NWFL regulations,” Shabi said. “The NWFL wishes to reiterate that the safety of referees is paramount. Violence, intimidation, or any behaviour that undermines the integrity of the league will attract the strongest possible sanctions.” Following the preliminary review of official reports and video evidences, the NWFL found Ekiti Queens guilty of multiple breaches of league regulations, including failure to provide adequate security, failure to control supporters, and allowing an unsafe environment that led to the attack on officials. As punishment,Ekiti Queens have been fined a total of ₦2.5 million for the varying breaches. In addition, the NWFL also ordered the club to play their next three home matches at a neutral venue in MKO Abiola Stadium, Abeokuta. Shabi, also further, stressed that the penalties serve as a deterrent to all clubs across the league. “The NWFL will continue to enforce strict standards to protect match officials and maintain order at all centres. An attack on a referee is an attack on the league itself,” she said. “Clubs must ensure full compliance with our safety and conduct regulations.” The NWFL further appealed to home teams, state football associations, and matchday organisers to strengthen their security operations as the 2025/26 Premiership season gathers intensity.
